Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | Makes me sick thinking of this... but Sunday isn't going to be real warm. Bitter cold actually. Horses tore up their blankets so in the barn they will go. I always feel so bad for all animals and stray pets in the winter. :-( of course I can't get the picture to load but it's going to "feel like" -66 in my town and 2 hours north of here its -72.

Sure hope we do not get your cold temps!!

Tomorrow we're starting in the 20's and dropping through the day with 20-35 mhp winds with crazy low temps for the next few days, wind advisory and wind chill advisory. All fall and winter we've had such drastic changes in temps. Not healthy for man or beast. |

| My grandpa grew up in North Dakota and always told us all the stories about how cold it was, I remember him always saying he'd wake up in the morning and there would be 3 inches of ice on the INSIDE of the windows. I supposedly have quite a bit of family from there but I don't know any of them. |

The homes are built for the extreme temps. My house is 110 years old, never had plumbing freeze up. Many homes including mine have basements which helps keep it warmer on the main floor. |

I have a mobile home and have had my water freeze up once so far this year but had to do more with my pressure tank not working. I have my house banked with snow which helps insulate as my water lines are by the outer walls. As someone said our water lines are at least 6' deep for the frost line. Can't wait until we build in the spring and have a basement instead of these cold floors. I feel bad for all the livestock and pets that are not able to come in. |

-74 takes your breath away when you step outside and hurts your lungs. Don't cover your face and your skin will freeze within minutes. We've had -25 as the actual air temp without wind chills already this year. |

It was in the low 20's the other day when I ran to town for groceries. There were a handfull of people running around in shorts. I'm hoping since December has been colder than normal that January will be warmer? |

I would love if this was the bottom and we were on our way up but they are projecting the whole winter will be this way. It felt amazing out yesterday and this morning but it's back to the deep freeze now :( I'm just hoping we have a decent spring unlike this past year. |

| At least it's only going to FEEL like that and not ACTUALLY be -74. That would be even more awful. Nice 37 degress here and it's supposed to drop tomorrow night to those cold temps - battened down all the hatches tonight and put out feed and hay bales for everyone. Hoping we can pull through and not have it be too miserable. Gotta love Northern, WI. |

| It sure didn't feel nearly as cold as what they were saying it was suposed to. Don't get me wrong, you walk out the door and immediately become a mouth breather because your nostrils are stuck together but it wasn't as windy out so it didn't hurt your face as much. |

Yeah they manage to do fine, the few garter snakes we have go down below the frost line, bears and skunks hibernate, I feel for the deer, could care less about the coyotes and wolves. Im sure some do perish - strong survive, the weak die. I know a lot of people who dont put their horses up or have blankets, mine I put in the barn on cold nights like this. Right now they are outside, I think its -15? They are just fine.. they were out running around soon as I let them out of the barn. |

My parents friends lived and teached in Hallock many years ago, my dad still deer and duck hunts in Lake Bronson. I agree its been pretty cold this winter so far, usually this is weather typical of Jan and Feb, not December. |

For the wild animals it can be harsh for them IF access to food is limited due to the amount of snow.....we have a few piles of silage and grain in fields around us so the deer & moose have a buffet basically (which isn't good for the farmer) GRANTED I'm not in the -72 zone BUT I'm still in a part that gets MIGHTY cold!
But overall animals can survive given the right resources to keep their energy (body heat) up....horses and cows get lots of extra food when it turns COLD, we have only gotten down to -43 (including wind) so far this winter....but it's not over... |

In all honesty I don't worry as much about the harsh winters as I do as the drastic heat and humidity in the summer along with them fighting flies and mosquitos. During some of the heat waves the feedlots and ranchers lose a lot of animals whereas you seldom hear about losing any animals in the winter unless its a freak blizzard like western SD had in October. |
