I would suggest having this discussion with your vet.
My vet has told me to observe them walking away from me, if their leg is swinging out then in there are problems. If the horses hock area wiggles when the foot is placed on the ground there are problems. My vet has also taught me how to do a quick flexion test and the more thorough 90 second flexion test. Swishing their tail when asking to turn or stop can be a sign, horse not stopping in straight line, stopping on front end are also signs.

I dont particularly think my horse has hock issues but i will be having them examined soon... I posted about stifles and got some really good informative answers from everyone so i wanted to hear everyones experiences with hock issues as well :)

Another indicator of hock soreness is they may hop around the barrel.
I can always tell when my geldings hocks are sore by his attitude during slow work. He will always try to exit the arena quickly (sometimes will try to run out) when he is sore.
