What's helped you the most when you make a run or whenever you practice to help both you and your horse? What's the one thing you always remember? Mine has to be "Don't ever turn before your leg goes past the barrel" That there seems to have helped me a lot :)

Yes, but I can't help it when my horse sets herself up WAYYYY before the barrel that's why I posted the other thread. She's a ratey horse and I'm more used to free runners. My other horse ripped the muscle in between her shoulder blade and the vet said I can't do barrels anymore with her but I can breed her and her other 2 foals has also been free runners with a long stride. If I was to try and explain my ratey's horse stride it'd be Sherry Cervi's horse, Stingray, except mine might have a longer stride

NFR roper left his horse tied to another trailer one year during 4th of July run.  He left, left his horse.

Stuff happens.

If I'm not scared going to the first I'm not going fast enough...ok well might have stole that from somewhere, but it's pretty accurate....

I don't  think about too much...I stay confident in that I've prepared enough before that we can go in and run a nice pattern, doesn't mean I don't ride cause I still am engaged in the run.....

3 things-one for each barrel, anything more than that might just be too much for me to think and still stay on my horse LOL. The lady I bought my horse from gave me a sheet with this on it- 1st barrel- no woah, 2nd barrel- set, 3rd barrel- get out. The more I focus on just that, the better my run is. The last time I overthought, I was hanging (literally) off the side of my horse :P

Stop worrying about what might happen and just ride. Ride the best you can and leave your Sh** at the gate.

and listen to everyone screaming at you to do something, because they're probably right (like kicking, and you come out saying, "I WAS" then you look at the video and you're thinking you were temporarily paralyzed from the waist down.)

For all the haters. lol

I asked because she is hitting a lot of barrels, her words not mine.  So waiting till her leg passes the barrel then asking is not working, because he is coming in dropped, meaning not rounded.  She will hit it either coming in or leaving it.  I would get this horse to shape up (think the shape of a cresent moon going into your turns) and get his ribs to stay up, when your leg is at the middle of the barrel ask him to start his turn, remember to keep his nose tilted ever so slightly to the direction in which your going, and keep that heel dug into his side reminding him not to drop in on that turn.

SO hopefully this clears things up.

The best runs we have are the ones where I keep my hands super calm and in their "box"(no flailing), and use my legs, my seat, and my voice to cue my horse. 90% of the time when I ride at home I focus on riding pretty much without my reins and my horse does everything as well as you could ever ask for- its when I get all excited and on his face that we run into issues.

Just wanted to insert something here....the mind does not process the word no, not, etc. I want everyone to try something. Shut your eyes and don't think about a green bird. Do it now. ........

What did you think of as soon as you thought that? A green bird, right? That's because your mind does not process NOT....so when you are thinking something, always think about what you SHOULD do....instead of saying to yourself, "Don't lean", think "Sit up and stay in the middle" or instead of saying, "Don't turn till your leg gets past the barrel", tell yourself, "Get the horse's hip by". I tell myself this on my ratey horse all the way down the alley...."hip by, hip by" and chant that to myself.

Btw....if you have time to think what to do, you're going too slow. A really good run only gives you time to react, and it takes 30 times to create new muscle memory, so until you do something correctly for 30 days, it will not be automatic....that is why repetition is so important, and it is also why people come out and say, "WHY can't I remember to ______(fill in the blank)?" It's because they haven't practiced it for 30 days and when you're going fast, it has to be reaction, not thought.

The only thing that runs through my mind......"i'm here to have fun"

If you start taking it too serious, you don't have fun. I want to have fun when I barrel race. Not just sit on my horse, I enjoy talking to people and meeting new friends. I'M HERE TO HAVE FUN!

I also pray before I run...rodeo or barrel race...doesn't matter I still pray

Best advice I've ever read by far.

^^^^Agreed!!!! Having fun is important. I think barrel racers put to much stress on the situation. If you have fun then you relax!

dianeguinn - 2013-12-30 4:16 PM Just wanted to insert something here....the mind does not process the word no, not, etc. JMO

Some very stellar advice, thanks!  No more "don'ts" for me, I too will use the hip by hip by statement
