Picked up a cowboy tack set at a garage sale and the breastcollar is pretty dirty. I currently have on hand- Fiebings liquid saddle soap, Black Rock leather conditioner and a little tub of the Vaquero rawhide cream.
Where do I start? Do I just throw the rawhide cream on and rub it in with all the dirt and grim? Or do I need to wet the rawhide down and try and get some of the grim off before starting with the cream?
Any tried and true suggestions are helpful, this is my first set with rawhide and Im in the dark on whats ok and whats not ok to clean it up.
Use a damp cloth to pat some of the dirt and loose dust off of it ... but do not wet it down ...>>>>>>>>>>
Use only the rawhide cream .... once rawhide is not taken care of it dries up and has a scaly surface which will peel or chunk off and turn even uglier. Rawhide is green untanned leather ...
All of the other leather products will loosen the rawhide and it will become a rats nest over time ....
FYI: saddle soap is not for cow leather products it was invented for use on pig skin English saddles .... it will suck the oils out of cow leather ...
100% neatsfoot oil is used on old dried out leather to soften it up and the main use is to be used on leather goods that get sweated on a lot to protect them from the salt and water in sweat .... i.e. reins, back sides of breast collars and rear cinchas ...
