So, I've been out of barrel racing for about 3 yrs now. I have a 4yr old and a 1 yr old sons. I work full time (50+hours) and I also live in an area with crummy weather/ground right now. I have been wanting to get back to barrel racing/rodeo but havent found the time or support. My husband is always gone working.

So, I was thinking about things the other night and realized if I don't start barrel racing, I probably never will! Ugh. I still have my horse (shes been turned out.).

So, I called a trainer that I know and scheduled my horse to go get ridden for a month or two...but now, that leaves me. I've gotta get fit now, or I wont be able to ride her when she gets back.

Any advice on where to start? I need to get back in riding shape.

Thanks in advance!

I started walking when I was unable to ride due to weather.
I have a tread mill and got up to walking a 15 min mile, then got on a bike with sliding handle bars (like a row boat) to work my arms.
It did help when I was able to finally start riding.

A year ago I got myself an exercise bike. I put 10 miles on a day, watched what I ate and lost 30 pounds plus did planks every day. I think its improved my riding a ton.

Can you go ride your horse with the trainer a few times too? Kind of a tune up for you and your horse? Even when I'm in pretty good shape, actually riding helps me develop the right muscles.

Yes, I will still have a horse here that I can ride...but with weather its horribly hard and time..ugh. I wanna get myself fit, so i can ride like 3-4 times per week and still be okay.

I have a bike...and access to walk. I will try that.

Anything else? Diet tips?

Ride bareback, you don't waste time saddling or even brushing your horse much, just where your butt goes.  If the ground is crappy, just walking and trotting a bit will help your riding if you are bareback, you can lope when the ground is better.

Omg, idk if I could even lope my horse bareback anymore. I'd probably fall off and die! Ugh, that's horrible to hear myself say! Boo, I've got my work cut out for me!

I have 20 pounds I'd like to lose (I'd settle for 15 lol). I'd consider me losing this weight as horse riding/barrel racing shape. I like to be lean & fit if I'm gonna be competitive. And working out helps tons with your core which is imperative for riding.

I go to the gym and I do the elliptical every single time I go (3-4x a week minimum)
And I lift weights 2 of those days.

I do crunches with a 5 pound weight on my chest, I do squats, I do just about every machine in there. If Im on the elliptical Im on it for like 25 minutes to start and as I go more I will build up to an hour.

When I do elliptical with weights than no more than 30 minutes and weights can take me up to an hour.

Within 90 days I'll be in shape again. I generally see visual results in month 2. In month 1 I can feel my endurance getting better and my weights getting higher in poundage as I get stronger.

Month 3 I will start to see toning results.

Diet is a HUGE part of everything.

I try to only drink iced tea (no sugar) and water and stuff, doesn't always happen so I keep all soda and stuff to a minimum.
Food consists of me going to whole foods and trader joes. I try to get stuff I can make at home, but often I return to whole foods' salad bar. I love their kale salad (no dressing needed).
I cut out fast food completely.
Vegan/vegetarian restaurants are my best friend (though that can get costly fast).
I will eat oatmeal, fruits/veggies, I still eat pasta I make, but I don't use sauce, I use pesto instead (I had an artichoke ravioli with pesto last night & veggies, yum!)
Chicken is always good or turkey! If I do make spaghetti I will use turkey as a meat base and make my own sauce filled with green onions, garlic etc.
I also use supplements.
I will get a meal replacer sometimes for like lunch or something while i'm at work or on the go. I like herbalife since it isn't the worst and I can get it on Amazon for super cheap.
I use Vega Pre-workout and Accelerated Recovery too.
You just mix a scoop in water and done. The Pre-workout gives me energy for the workouts (I swear it works, I get these products @ whole foods)
and Accelerated Recovery is supposed to help repair torn muscles and stuff after the workout. I think it helps a lot when I get DOMS. It doesn't hurt as much and I recover faster. Like I'll be over DOMs in 2 days instead of 3 or 4.

Unfortunately I'm not super consistent. I work 2 jobs and go to school and I barrel race. I do most of my working out when I don't have school, but now I go to a university that has a gym on campus so I predict I'll be going regularly. I definitely fall out of my routine around finals and gain a lot of weight there since I tend to drink (to keep my sanity) and eat pizza (great, fast study food). I have zero metabolism it seems and I balloon right up. I can gain 10 pounds from finals week alone lol.

But! If I can find time to go to the gym with all this then its possible with kids too!
Otherwise P90X is amazing at getting people in shape too that can't leave the house.
But really diet is everything when working out. You can workout all day and eat crap food and never see results.
