Location: wherever my gypsy soul lands | What are your opinions on claiming racing QH's as prospects for the barrel pen? Or buying ones from the trainers that just are not posting great workouts? Anyone know of trainers in the SE area(FL/AL/GA/LA/MS) that have young horses that are not going to make it to the track that they are looking to get rid of?

| I bought one who did well on the track but developed gate issues and shin bucked. I got him as a four year old. He was AWESOME. No arena gate issues (I never had the guts to try to rope off him), good minded, fast, and just nice. He made a great HS Rodeo horse and went on to win a few big things with a very reputable gal.
ETA: He was an own son of Chicks Beduino for all you haters. ;-)

Location: Oklahoma | Get a thorough pre-purchase done by a vet not employed on the track, if possible. Biggest concern is doing as much homeowrk as possible and try to get "inside" information on claimers from sources you can trust. |

Location: wherever my gypsy soul lands | I've never really been interested in claiming a horse. Most of the claiming races are $5,000 and up. But if you ever have time on a rainy day, get on and look at the last mixed sale results at Heritage or LQHBA. It's crazy. Some of those 2 and 3 yr olds, either coming off the track or in training, are selling for next to nothing! May not be good enough for the track but you can't tell me that they couldn't be nice prospects to start on barrels/poles. Especially the geldings! It's sad! Lord, if I had a couple extra $1000 hanging around I'd buy a few to re-start... |

Location: Royal J Performance Horses, AZ | I just got 2 mares right off the track and I love them! They are only broodmare sound and thats what i got them for. But with how easy these 2 have been to work with I think I will look for one to start on barrels! |

If you want something sooner, the place that has the nicest that I have seen is Wide Open Race Horses here in LA. They are on Facebook. |

Thanks. I'll have to get on and see what they have. Amazing how you can get a prospect ready to start on the pattern cheaper than you can buy some weanlings these days. |

They don't last long either. If you see something you want, you'd better jump on it lol. |

What do they normally cost....price range wise? I liked their page, and saw that big beautiful grey and immediately fell in love!!! |

You have to text for prices....and they respond quickly. Everyone that I have texted for price was very reasonable for what the horse is. I can't recall one that I've inquired about being over $5000....$3500-$4500 price range usually. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | Also, there are lot's and lot's of horses that get entered in the $3500 claiming races here that are very, very nice. If you know the trainer's and watch how these horses race, I think it is a good way to go too. |

Location: Online | Definitely get a pre purchase exam, or at least talk to the trainer and ask everything about the horse. If they are in a cheap claimer with not a lot of starts chances are they have had soundness issues. Sometimes you are lucky and they are in cheap because they just can't compete on the track and the owner is cutting their losses. |
