| So this weekend in my area they are calling for -15 degrees and 20 mph winds! I can fit most of my horses in the barn (which has open run outs) but two would be left outside for the tiny run in that they will share if they feel like being nice. I haven't blanketed yet this year and really dont want to especially since we are going on vacation next week and dont want to have the baby sitter worry about blankets.
So what do you all do when it gets this cold?!?! |

Location: Jersey Girl | Well it almost NEVER gets that cold here (Thank God!) but if it did I guess I would do what needs to be done and the rest of the time I would be in the house lol
Edited to add: as for my horses, I haven't blanketed this year (first time in 4 or 5 years) but they have a nice, big dry run-in to use as they need to. We had some snow last night and today's high is only 19 with a -4 windchill. Monday it will be in the 40's.....

Mine have a run in shelter to get out of the wind, fresh water with a heater in it, and a fresh new round bale. I don't blanket either. They are probably giving me death glares since the barn isn't done yet, but they are equipped to handle the weather. |

Location: Southwest Minnesota | My horses just have a 3-sided shed to get out of the wind. I don't have barn space to put them inside. When it gets this cold I give them extra hay but a lot of times they are still out in the pasture eating even when it's this cold. My pasture has a big ravine in it so a lot of times that is where they head. They are fat and fuzzy and do just fine in the cold temps. |

The only ones I have been putting in, during the extremely cold temps, are my 30 year old retiree and a broodmare that is struggling with keeping her weight in the cold. Everything else is outdoors, furry and happy. I do have a blanket on our FF stud since he doesn't grow much hair. |

Up here in my neck of the woods with the wind chill factor the weather stations were saying it will feel like 40 below....
YUCK!
Mine will have tons of hay in front of them.....I will only keep my one horse blanketed, because I have kept him blanketed since I ride him so much still in the winter so he is easier to cool out.
I may give a few doses of electrolytes too-and carefully monitor the amount of water they are drinking. (I don't have heated water buckets, nor do I have insulated ones) |

Location: Got Lobsta? | It was -15 with a -28 windchill this morning. I worry more about wind than anything. They go out while I clean stalls with their blankets on and come in for the rest of the day. They were out all day yesterday and it never got above -6 here but there was no wind and they were fine. As long as there is shelter, and loads of hay it doesn't seem to bother them. I think its going to be a LONG winter. |

| We pamper. All of our horses have good wind break, wear heavy water/wind proof blankets, and we keep round bales of straw out for them to cuddle up in when it gets crappy. We feed extra hay, and they munch on the straw a bit once they're done the hay. When the wind really gets going we put them in tie stalls in the barn (no heat) for the night to eat their supper and breakfast, and then turn them out again for the day to get some exercise (but they aren't usually very happy about it).
In your situation I'd say they're probably fine as long as they can get out of the wind, but the two who dont have as much shelter I would consider putting just a rain blanket on to keep them from getting a chill (while avoiding making them too hot) from any moisture and/or wind. |

-They have 2 run in stalls ( one is large; other is average )
-Blanketed (600-1200D with 250-400 lining). Unless it is supposed to be warm that day we do not take them off. However, I do take them off multiple times a week to ride them.
-roundbale 24/7. Our horses are sissies. If they run out of hay they will run through the fence (within 2 hours) and find their own. :(
-running water; it is from a large ditch.

Only NINE? - LOL - I would have a stroke if I had to deal with that many! I can do my chores in nothing flat in the mornings as I only have 2!
It WORRIES me too, when it gets this cold - I think I forget they ARE horses and they are (somewhat) used to the weather. They are saying wind chills here of -10 to -20 Sunday & Monday and that tends to scare me because we just aren't used to it being THAT cold here. I always throw gloves and a hat in the truck if I go anywhere - just in case. |

Mine don't get the extremly thick winter coats like horses up north do and I try to keep their coats at a minimum. I have a race tomorrow and it is suppose to be sunny and high 60"s, if they get too thick a coat it is hard on them.
I don't know how you handle those winters every year. What do you do with your kids??? They bundle up and still go outside? Getting my kids out of the house was sometimes key to our existence. :) I would have gone Joan Collins on them if we were cooped up 24/7 together.

Same here. Im in northern MN and just saw the Gov. closed school for the whole stae on Monday because of the low temps/windchills forecasted for Monday. That is almost unheard of here (to close all of the schools in the state). It has been horrible this year so far, usually Jan and Feb are cold and Im used to that, but most of December has been nasty. My horses tore off and shredded their Rambo blankets so now they have nothing (they didnt get blanketed until they had a decent hair coat). old man still has his heavyweight on and I have another 100gram liner on him. I have three stalls in the barn which is usually 10-20 above but the one night they chose to be outside in -40 temps. We'll see if they want to stay in or not this weekend. Long as they have hay and a place to get a break from the wind and mine have warm water, they will be fine. |

Its all relative to what we're used to though. In your area 20 is COLD! My kids are 18 & 20 now but when they were little and it got that cold they stayed in the house. Then they got a little older and they'd come out to help with chores since its the coldest times are the most work. Now that they're grown, my daughter hates the cold but my son doesn't mind it. He's a Sr and still on winter break and spent his break building a new ice shack. He worked overtime yesterday so he can get off early today to get his shack on the lake so he can fish in comfort during the cold snap. |

I don't own a blanket and the horses do not go in the barn where I board. But they've got tons of hay, water, and excellent wind shelter. My two will be their usual fat and happy selves. I'll give my guys some extra grain on Saturday and Sunday, but that's just to make me feel better. They don't really need it.

Sadly Granny's recipe makes 8 kuchen's which means I'll have 8 kuchens staring me in the face saying....eat me, eat me! What kind of kuchen?
I've got it in the oven as we speak. I have 4 peach and 4 cherry. What's your favorite? I should have been better prepared and made something different. |

Its a German dessert sorta like a pie but the crust is more of a bread with fruit, custard and topped off with a sugar/butter crumble. Can we say fattening as heck? |

OMGosh that's so true! I forgot about that. Sadly making kuchen is kind of a dying art. My grammy made it and taught me. She didn't even attempt to teach her 2 daughters (my mom). I'm pretty sure she didn't have much hope in the baking dept for them. LOL |

You and me both. We're probably bidding against each other! LOL Shopping online is a bad winter habit for me. I've been boot shopping this winter and its not like I need any boots! I've bought 2 pair so far and trying to decide on a 3rd pair now for my brothers wedding this summer. Lord help me. |

Oh, I'm probably a mean horsey mommy, but my horse gets to brave the cold herself. She gets plenty of hay, though. Her blanket is called a natural winter coat and a nice layer of fat. :) I do say an extra prayer for her well being though, while I try to stay in the house when I don't have to shovel snow.

A lot of Grandma's recipe is hard to follow unless you understand how she did things. LOL Here's a link to a recipe very similar from some ladies that make kuchen to sell and ship out all over. Its nummy-licious. The picture they show on this page looks really thin compared to mine. I punched my dough down 3 different times today instead of twice like the recipe says since I had to go outside for some chores. Mine raised quite a bit because of it so my crust got a little thick. For the pans I use the disposable pie tins. I wash them up and keep using them. THey were handed down to me from my grandma. (o: http://southdakotamagazine.com/cooking-kuchen |

Location: ohio-in my own little world with pretty ponies :) | Mine are in the barn. They aren't blanketed. I go out frequently to make sure their water doesn't freeze. Most times it won't but with the below zero temps were having they sometimes do. I say as long as they have a place to eat and get water and get out away from the weather then they should be fine.
I sure do hate doing stalls in this weather though!!! |

Everyone has their own feelings and opinions on this. I choose to baby mine. The wind is the killer. I hate the wind. I only have 9 horses so I have stalls for everyone.
Same here.....today we had 40 degrees & rain early this evening followed by a nice blizzard where we couldn't see across the yard. Sunday we have a HIGH of -20 with 30+ mph winds. It's going to be flat out ugly. I've got 9 in the barn, all the young & old ones. And The 5 others are in a corral with pretty good wind protection & heavy blankets. Everyone gets LOTS of hay. Hardest part for me is keeping water to everyone in the barn as the buckets freeze up so dang fast. |

Location: Wisconsin | Mine are all in the barn in stalls. I let them run in the indoor arena 2 at a time for an hour or so. This is fricken ridiculous!! I feel so bad for some of the Amish horses around here standing up against the barns and not eating ANYTHING extra and they are already skinny, makes me so mad |

We are crazy to live here and yet I can't imagine living anywhere else. Of course by tomorrow night I might be totally ready to move south! I always wondered what it would be like to live somewhere where you don't really have winter. |

An hour or so ago I walked by the thermometer and it said 38! I thought it was broke so I went outside to check and it was beautiful. The snow was melting and water was running off the roofs. Sadly the wind is switching and here comes the nastiness. We'll have ice covering everything along with the snow/wind/cold. Be careful everyone and stay safe. |

That's how it was here all day, it was 39 when I woke up this morning, did chores in a sweatshirt! I honestly thing the temperature swings we've been having are harder on both us and the animals than just the cold. 60-70 degree temp changes almost over night are flat hard to handle. |

The temp change is what drives me insane. We weren't very warm until tonight. I spent a lot of time outside today cleaning the lots and yard/driveway with the tractor and feeding more hay bales. It was nicer than what its been but still had coveralls on. sigh......I should have taken my bff up on her suggestion of Arizona. |

Location: PA | Goodness I don't know how you guys do it! I was on stall 3 of 5 tonight and was about in tears my hands hurt so bad and were freezing (That was with 2 nylon gloves and a insulated heavy winter glove). I cheated the next two stalls and got the horses in and myself inside on the heater. Our usual is to put the horses in over night they are put in at about 9 o clock pm and out at 10am so they are inside when it's coldest. They also go in when there is alot of precipitation or wind. Then they are turned out during the daytime if its not too ugly. I'd probably leave them out more if they had a roundbale but they are fed morning and night only so they are unable to stand around eating all day. When they are turned out only one wears a blanket and that is my thin skinned mare who has always been sensitive to everything. I take it off when she's in except for these past night where it has been down to -6 wind chill, 6 without. Averagely it is in the 20s or atleast teens overnight. The horses were begging to be put in tonight.
