Anyone else's horses get super dandruff-y when you blanket for the winter?  My horse is terrible.  I'll spray Showsheen on the bad parts (butt, hip), let it dry, and then use a rubber  curry comb to get most of the nastiness out.  Other than giving a bath before blanketing for the winter.....is there any way to avoid it?  It's so nasty.

A friend and I were just discussing this today during a ride. We have 2 that get real dandruffy and she has 1 that does. Last winter I resorted to vacuuming them once or twice a week with the shop vac. Worked pretty good.

Start feeding milled flax seed and it will help a bunch. In my experience Show Sheen can make it worse as they need to build up their natural oils, and Show Sheen breaks down that oil.

Rice bran or rice bran oil will help too. It makes their coat slick and shiny (but also puts weight on, so keep that in mind if you have an easy keeper)

mine is blanketed and never has dandruff.

also, the show sheen will dry out their hair as well.

Yeah I try not to overdo it on the Showsheen.  But it helps a little and lasts quite a while. One horse gets it bad, the other is fine.  So weird!  We're transferring them over to Renew Gold so maybe the rice bran in that will help.

This is my favorite grooming spray, especially during blanket season.
