I've been looking at trying one on my horse, but would like to know what others' experiences were with these? are they helpful to you? Do they irritate the horses neck/ rub off their mane?? Im just curious to see, I know they are getting popular now. Thanks!

If your breast collar doesn't interfere with the shoulder, you don't really need one. They are becoming kind of a fad piece of equipment that a lot of people who don't need one use.

That being said, I use one. I run in a tie down so I have to use a breast collar even though my saddle fits well. The breastcoar sits pretty low so I use the wither strap to fix that.

No, it doesn't rub him. If you had your breast collar adjusted too tight and your wither strap too tight, I could see it rubbing though.

have to use a wither strap with our narrow chested gelding to get the breast collar to sit right. Works great and have never had an issue with it.

I think about the constrained feeling I get in a halter style bathing suit. Or the way I feel when anything falls tightly across the back of my neck. Nope. I can't put one on my horse.

Interesting. Well I have always had a slight issue fitting my horse with his breast collar and it does sit a little low... Do yall prefer the nylon style or the leather straps?

I use one whenever I have a breastcollar that sits too low on the shoulder. I get mine from a local tack maker and they are leather with a fleece padding underneath, never had an issue with it rubbing out mane.

The D-rings on my saddle on placed quite low, so I feel like my breastcollar restricts the shoulder. I use a wither strap to raise it out of the way. I've never had an issue with it rubbing. I don't have anything fancy; just a loop of plain scrap leather.

I use one on my young mare to get it up over the point of her shoulder. My other mare doesn't need one, and the Ds in her saddle are up a fair amount higher.

I use one and have had a bit of trouble with my rein catching on the oversized buckle. Its annoying. I think if it had a smaller more streamlined buckle I wouldn't have a problem.

Well, I think I will scrounge around the barn to see if I can make one! I know we have some scrap leather and parachute cord, so I'll just have to get my creative juices flowing lol about how long should I make it??

Honestly what I did was get two old leather dog collars and attached them in the middle with an old buckle from a broken headstall and put clips at the end! I only use it when the breastcollar sits way too low on the horses shoulder

I like mine and I just braided some para cord and put a snap on the end. Make a trial version of twine and go for a ride to see if you like it and how long to make it. I haven't noticed it rubbing but could see a problem if it is too tight.

I am using a stretchy leg strap from a horse sheet. It works pretty well and has some give to it while still doing its purpose.

My horses main has turned a little gray but he also has the most sensitive skin of any horse. he ran in deep mud and I washed his legs after and he has white scars from it (didnt have boots on so it wasnt that).

Ive never seen any horses effected by it.

You can use a spare throat latch to make one also. I put a scissor snap on it and it works just like a purpose-built with strap :)

Use one on my gelding. He's in between pony and regular horse size to a horse size sits too low. I just bought a plain leather one and had some friend put some silver studs on it and they laughed and wondered if they were making theirs too big.

I used a old bungee cord on Wrangler for years!
No buckles, just a half hitch, and it was on.

I use just a simple piece of leather like what you use to attach the bit to a bridle. It's so small in diameter that you don't notice it and doesn't rub the hair out. I just tie it
where you would attach a regular strap.

I just use a nylon bucket strap that I wasn't using and put a clip on the opposite side. I haven't had any hair rubbing or pulling from it and I didn't have to spend any money making it either!! I believe mine is about a foot long but honestly I would love it if it was an inch shorter. I didn't have to use a wither strap until I bought my new saddle recently. The D rings sit in a great position but my regular breast plate became too small and I had to use my other one, which it a tad too big hahaha.

I used to use goat tying strings, but my brother is now into making stuff with paracord (dog collars, leashes, etc) so I tapped into his creative abilities and asked for a wither strap for Christmas. That one turned into 3. I want to say mine are about the same length as a typical scarf or goat tying string. I don't have buckles or snaps on mine, I just tie each end to the rings on the breast collar and adjust until I like how the breast collar is draping along their shoulders. My gray horse has a really long shoulder so breast collars always fall down on him. I haven't had any problems with hair rubbing off or horses getting irritated by the straps and I haven't spent any money on wither straps. Since I quit tying goats, I wasn't using my goat strings anyway so they just got repurposed.
