I just tried out a gelding that I really got along with. He is great, but I noticed a little warty looking spot about the size of a dime on his right side (in front of the cinch and behind the elbow). I'm wondering if it might be a sarcoid. I will be having him vetted next week and will definitely have the vet look at it to see if it actually is a sarcoid or something else. So, if it does turn out to be a sarcoid would you buy the horse or pass? The horse is very expensive, so I don't know if it is worth it.

I would ask if its presented a problem in the past. I bought a horse with one and it was right near his chin strap and it eventually exploded due to irritation. There are several different kinds and some are more agressive. I was always told to leave them but since his was exploding and growing, we did have it surgically removed and thankfully it didnt come back. I dont think it would deter me only because I know many horses with them and very few pose a problem.

I wouldn't recommend buying one with a sarcoid, though it wouldn't scare me personally at this point. My gray horse had one on each side of his mouth, one on his shoulder, one on his left front foot and one on his belly. They showed up after I bought him, and I spent two years battling them before we finally got rid of all the sarcoids. The foot one was our biggest challenge and I literally doctored it daily for a year with a variety of drugs before we beat it. Since my vet and I know just about every sarcoid remedy on the planet, I'd be confident that we could win the battle again and hopefully with a lot less headache and expense than we needed to beat Chance's sarcoids. However, if your vet doesn't have experience with them, I wouldn't recommend buying that particular problem. Sarocids SUCK and no two are alike, which is why it usually takes more than one type of treatment to get rid of a sarcoid.

See what the vet has to say about it. And if it is a sarcoid they are a pain in the butt to deal with if more starts to pop up.

I would get the vets opinion for sure, but I had a mare that developed one above her eye.  My vet gave me some paste like stuff to dab on it everyday and it went away and never came back after the first time.  None ever developed anywhere else, but I am sure each horse and case should be treated individually as the results will vary.

Have a vet check them and give his opinion. My horse developed sacroids at the age of 4 on his neck. My vet told me all the treatment options and we decidied to wait and see what woud happen. By 6, they had disappeared with no treatment. He is now 13 and they have never come back.
I know others who applied cremes/and or surgericaly had them removed with both positive and negative results.
Good luck

I bought a 6 year old stallion last spring, did not see him in person due to distance. He had what was described to me by both vet and owner as a "skin tag" up high on the inside of his front leg. Had him shipped and when he arrived, this thing looked like a 3 inch hairy shoelace hanging. I planned to have it removed as asap. Well, from being a "shoelace" in the evening, it literally blasted out to a bloody, ugly tumor hanging there. Several hundred dollars later, the vet removed it, and I spent months getting it healed and protecting him from flies, etc.
Lost the breeding season (seven outside mares), and the riding, had hoped to derby him. Would I buy one with a sarcoid again? Nope, don't need the expense, the care and the worry of reoccurence.

I have a 6 year old gelding with two small places my that vet says she thinks are sarcoids (they are flat).  Since I am wanting to sell this horse I was pretty upset about this but my vet says it's not a big deal and that if she were the buyer it wouldn't deter her from buying him at all.  I guess it really has to do with what kind of sarcoid you're dealing with as there are several kinds.   I'd vet the horse and go with what your vet says...good or bad.

I had a bay gelding with very large sarcoids, vet removed them and we waited for a couple of months.......then I did the xterra treatment on him. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another horse with sarcoids, just like other people wouldn't hesitate to buy a bleeder.....personally doesn't bother me none

We're in the process of buying a broodmare that has one on her cheek, about the size of a quarter, it doesn't affect her and never has. Really just a blemish.

NO especially in the area you describe, are you planning on riding bareback all the time? even with hold back straps (if you ride with a western saddle) you can't keep the girth out of that area if you do any type of up or down hill riding. How many horses have you owned in the past?

My gelding developed a sarcoid on his left girth area pretty parallel to his elbow. It was not the flat kind (had a horse as a kid with the flat kind on his neck never was the least amount of a problem). I cannot remember the specific name for the type of sarcoid my guy developed on his girth but it looked like a pimple on steroids. I still rode with it being there I used 2 bit guards around it to protect it from the girth for 3 or 4 months, to see if it was going to grow, shrink, or go away. It grew, so I nursed it along for about another month to get to cold enough weather the flies and bugs would allow him to heal after removal of it. After speaking to several vets I was given the option of freezing it off, a longer term paste to make it fall off, or surgically cutting it out (was only skin deep). I had it surgically removed, due to the shortest recovery time, and all options still leave a chance of sarcoids coming back. He was off for 2 weeks with stitches, I took the stitches out myself at 14 days and that was the end of that. This was about a month ago I had it removed, so far so good. Cost me about $225. Sarcoids wouldn't scare me unless the horse was polluted with them, if that is the worst thing about that horse sounds like you found a good one!

I haven't had horses all my life, but have for the last 15 yrs. I don't know exactly why how many horses I've had has anything to do with my question.

The only thing that would worry me is where it is.. it is so difficult to keep a area such as that healed if it is..
