I know this is a barrel racing forum but I'm sure a good amount of you rope too. I'm wondering the differences in roping saddles, like team roping vs calf roping vs breakaway saddles. What's the difference? I hear people say they have a team roping saddle and a calf roping saddle. Is there a difference?

i only know this because my husband is in the market for a new TEAM roping saddle and I almost bought him a new CALF roping saddle, but the cantle of the team roper is higher than the calf roper so you can swing your leg over quicker. Other than that...they look the same. Just like he tells me a Double T and a Double J barrel saddle look the same. LOL

Usually a calf roping saddle will have a shorter cantle and shorter, flatter swells, along with a smaller horn then a team roping saddle. I believe breakaway saddles are the same as a calf roping saddle unless its more of a all around saddle.

Good explanation. My breakaway saddle is a barrel/roping combo, pretty much like a barrel saddle with a thicker horn, and double skirt. I like how lightweight it is compared to other lady ropers. Really you could breakaway in a barrel saddle if you had to. Not ideal, but it's been done.

I roped in my barrel saddle for many years and did ok, but barrel saddles allow your legs to move easily...and this can be an issue when roping. Since I am older now and have a bit more difficulty stabilizing my self I switched to a roping saddle...I use a Three Forks team roper (since I don't get off) and wish I had used it sooner. Really holds my feet and legs in place and allows me to get my rope up without worrying about staying on. I have a mare right now that STOPS and I needed a saddle to give me enough confidence that I won't be a lawn dart!
