I recently sold my saddle since it didn't fit my horse and was making him sore. I had a back-up (was borrowing a friend's treeless) but she took that saddle home to sell it on EBay and will not be bringing it back. I have a couple hundred more dollars to save before I can afford the saddle I need for my horse. In the meantime, would it make me an awful mom to occasionally ride in a saddle that doesn't fit him perfectly? No one else at the barn really has something appropriate for him & me.

Depends on how imperfect we are talking about.

Or you could just ride bareback!

I would ride bareback before risking injury or soreness from a poor saddle fit.  To me it wouldn't be worth making my horse hate to be ridden because the saddle wasn't the one he needed.

I knew y'all were going to say that... this is my 5 year old whom I have never ridden bareback. I guess I will be forced to try it now!

Bareback or lots of groundwork.

I'm in the same boat while I wait for my new triple creek. My horse tolerates bareback, but luckily it's just been too cold to ride.

If you are afraid to full on try bareback right away, put a pad on him with a surcingle. Or a bareback pad.

I don't recommend buying a bareback pad though. I have one I have used MAYBE twice in 10+years lol. A gift from my parents when I was a kid.

I had a custom saddle made to fit my mare....it ended up laming out her back so I sent it back to have a new one built.......gave her time off....and I've been running in a roping saddle lately LOL

I've seriously been waiting 3 months for this new saddle to come back...and it won't be done until march

I really hate this bump in his training. But I think lots of groundwork and MAYBE a bareback ride will have to do.

For short rides less then an hour 3-4 times a week for a short period of time should not affect your horse, if the saddle isn't pinching bad.

Marlene McRae said to me once that there are many top notch horses running with poor saddle fit. She said that we, barrel racers, don't spend enough time in the saddle to cause problems.

I know many people will argue with this, and I have had my horses fitted and ordered saddles, I also rode my 4 year old with a saddle that didn't fit her till I got the proper one, she has no atrophy, no soreness, and her attitude is still good.

when i want to ride bareback i use the sursingle idea or if you dont have one, you can take a leather tie strap and a girth and connect the two on top of your pad. If your horse doesnt like the feel of riding bareback this usually fixes it.

Cheaper than a surcingle.  Take two girths, a draw strap and off strap just like you use on a saddle.  Then just put a regular saddle pad on with this on top of it.  I also put a little thin nylon dog collar where the rings were on the middle of the girth for a handle.
