Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | Very true! Sometimes they call off school if they think it MIGHT snow or ice. But...there were 3 traffic deaths in AR yesterday and a school bus flipped over due to icy roads (kids were ok), so there ya go. |

| 20 years ago my husband and i went to florida to get away from the cold and it followed us they got a little ice and snow and people down there where not even slowing down and with 2 miles we saw 2 or 3 wrecks, so we decided to turn around and wait a day. Went to,the hotel and they had rolling brown out because they do,there power plant maintance. Next day we went to fort meyers and they had no heat the hotel it was 50 degrees slept with our clothes. Saw snow flakes and frost on car next day, went to fill up went in to go to the bathroom they told me it was froze up. |

That reminds me--my local vet was out yesterday pulling blood for coggins tests, and was telling me about nearly freezing to death this week. He has a 45 minute drive to work and the heater in his truck hasn't worked in 2 years. We've had such mild winters, it wasn't a problem until now. It was 9 degrees Tuesday morning...he said he will be getting that **** thing fixed after that experience! LOL |

Location: Kentucky | My husband is from the top of Ohio, but has been in KY for over 10 years. He still laughs when they cancel school for snow. He said he remembers that they put chains on the bus tires. We sure don't do that in KY. I have to keep reminding him that snow is not the norm here in the bluegrass! |

I was just going to post this! We have had no snow, ice, or hazardous conditions whatsoever where I live, but they shut all the public schools in my county down for two days this week because of the temperature! Record lows for the area, but still above 0 degrees WITH windchill.
After reading all of yalls posts about how cold it is where you are, I think the kiddos would have been just fine, but they said it was for the ones who had to wait outside for buses. They just weren't equipped to handle that kind of weather. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | The people here in South Texas can not drive in this stuff, they dont have the smarts to slow down when we get a drizzle and start sliding into each other. Lots of fender benders when we get a tiny bit of ice are light rain. |

Location: North Dakota | I guess there could be the opposite one about heat too then. Us up north when it reaches 95 degrees think the world is coming to an end while down south thats a nice balmy day. I know quite a few schools around here don't start until after Labor Day due to the "heat" (like 80 degrees...lol). They are working on ACs on a few local schools to get them opening sooner. |

Location: North MS | So true! We use a wood burning heater as our main source of heat. When we came home we got the fire going and re-loaded it two times at least and went to bed. I would wake up the next am with my bedroom electric space heater going (with tip safety and a temp shutoff when it reaches a certain temp). It never got more than 58 degrees in my bedroom. I was about to freeze. Fire had burnt out in the fireplace. Hubby had gotten up and left for work. Outside it was a chilly 9 degrees. I took off work since I work in the woods each day (actually for two days). Wind chill was -15 I think? Had to actually wear gloves. Not an option to go without. Many layers of clothes. Poor truck had to actually warm up before we could move.
Naturally a horse develops colic symptoms. Hauled to vet on Monday evening in 18 degrees. People actually waved me past on the way to the vet. I guess they realized only an idiot or an emergency would be out in this weather. Made it in record time and avoided an after hours fee. Turns out just anemic and getting over a virus of some sort (repo horse that wasn't vaccinated this year). She wouldn't eat and was laying down a lot. I had a thermometer defective from the factory.
Water in feed room broke pipes 3 times. Its now capped off until I can fix it this weekend. This is actually after I took the time to cover the pipes with the black tube pipe insulation. It turns out that cracks run a LONG way on pipes. Practically up into the fittings. We keep a rubbermaid box of pipe fittings at the house. Since I have to re-plumb I'm going to add a hot water spigot to the outside of the barn with an insulated box cover.
I do know that my facebook feed was covered up with people fixing broken pipes the past few days. My darn dogs have destroyed 3 faucet covers and remove the insulated nylon bag ones daily. Bitter yuck doesn't stop them. Next step is spray cooking oil and cayenne pepper.
Southerners just don't do cold. |

| They rarely cancel school here and still make the kids go outside to play even when it is below zero. I remember our bus getting stuck in snow or ice and we just had to wait until another one came to get us and walk out to where it could make it. I always hoped for snow days but never happened while I was in school. |

Where is this that the kids go out for recess when it is below zero? |

Around here if its too cold for recess outside the kids play in the gym or watch a movie. |

Location: Florida | In the South we have "hurricane days". The school district calendar designates three "hurricane make-up days" on the master calendar. Once the winds get over 35 mph the school buses can't cross the bridges so school is closed. Also, many schools are hurricane shelters so school can't open up until it is safe to cross the bridges. By bridges I am talking about tall bridges over water to the barrier islands which make up about 1/4 of our county. |

You are lucky....here, they start talking about it 4 or 5 days BEFORE it hits.........The first year we lived down here, I was convinced that it was going to be a blizzard....phhhhht ! I didn't even get a picture of it before it melted..... |
