| It's something else!
My boxer was kenneled for 4 days over this past weekend. He is up to date on all his vaccinations including a Bordatella shot that was administered in Sept of this year.
He certainly picked something up while he was there!! I have no experience with Kennel Cough, but upon doing a little internet research, that seems to be what is up. He is doing that reverse sneeze thing and if he scrunches up his neck you can hear a low gurgle in his throat/nose. He is eating and drinking and although you can tell he doesn't feel the best, overall his attitude hasn't changed much.
Internet says to let it run it's course and keep them from getting to wound up/stressed out. Anyone have experience with this? Is what I"m reading true, or does he need medicine? |

| I'd call the vet. We dealt with kennel cough in our hounds. It went through them all. It was a pain, but with a quick run of meds, it's pretty easily taken care of. |

I am the manager of an animal control facility and I have lots of experience with kennel cough, unfortunately. I was also a vet tech for 6 years before I came to AC. It is very easy to spread and the vaccination does not 100% prevent a dog from getting it. Usually a vet will give antibiotics, but generally, it just has to run its course. It is very contagious to other dogs so make sure he has no other contact with other dogs until he completely clears up. Usually with kennel cough you can illicit a cough by rubbing the trachea. They will also usually start gagging and coughing up a clear liquid. It sounds horrible, but most dogs usually go about their daily life and have no problems. It seems to bother the owners more... :) Make sure you let the boarding facility know what is going on as well. They will need to do a deep clean w/ a bleach mixture. It is sooo hard to get rid of. Yes I just spoke with my vet. Said it is much like a cold in people, that it mostly just has to run it's course. Said that because he is vaccinated it should be shorter and less severe than it could be without it.
I wondered about letting the kennel know? Like I said I have no experience so I wasn't sure if it is just a risk you take or if it is something they'd be concerned to hear.
I will let them know.
