I am trying to sell my extra saddle and have a person interested but she's about 8 states away so I'd have to ship it. I have never shipped a saddle - always sold them locally - and after measuring the box my last used one came in, USPS says to ship a 30-pound box 31 inches by 19 inches by 23 inches from Kansas to Montana is going to cost almost $70. I can't find the box that my Cactus saddle came in to see if it is smaller, but is there any way to reduce the price of shipping? $70 makes it almost not worth selling the saddle and then you add in paypal fees and I'd be taking a pretty big hit.

You need to squeeze it in a smaller box......they are charging you the oversized freight fee (I think that is what it's called).......Normally I can ship mine with USPS for $45-$50....but the box size makes a world of difference!

I shipped one fed ex from ND to TX for $57.  I've heard the USPS is cheaper but would have been ticked to drag it all the way in their and have it be higher-ugh, I should have tried the USPS.  Especially if my hubby would have been around to carry it in and out :

I just sold two saddles and buyer paid shipping on both and paypal fees. I give them a quote and its agreed upon before shipping. Anything over what I quote them I pay for. I always ship through UPS because their shipping office is about a mile from where I work. Its easy for me :) Shipping averaged about $85 per saddle.

Go to Walmart.. Buy the 18x18x?? Box.. Tape the heck out of it. It was $35 to ship the last two via USPS. It cost me $68 to take a cutting saddle to a pack and ship place and have them do it all..they sent it UPS.

You should be able to cut down the box you are using if there is any room at all around the saddle. Just splice it down the corner and fold it over and tape the heck out of it. Most times its about $50 to ship but I have done them as low as $35. Also if you are associated with any businesses that have a UPS account the would let you ship through them it is a bit cheaper.

And finally usually the buyer pays shipping. The seller eats the Paypal fees unless agreed upon other wise.

Good luck

By me UPS is always cheaper than USPS.  Depending on where it ships to it's generally $25-45.

^^^^ this. I always ship UPS b/c it tends to be cheaper (for me) and there is a UPS shipping center in Parsons.

Did you ask for the cost of shipping the saddle when you sold the saddle? I always make sure to ask for $50 extra to cover the cost of shipping, and anything over I will pay the cost of....I actually do that with everything I sell

You can also get a packing box at Lowe's for a buck or two. That's where I got my last one at, and it was the perfect size for my saddle. I'd also recommend paying for the shipping online versus going to the store to pay. It's always a bit more any time I go to the counter regardless of if it's UPS, USPS, Fedex.

TRY UPS
I would never ship a saddle by USPS
Also pack it yourself  and take to an actual UPS Hub  That will save you a bunch
Insure it for sure!

We ship a few saddles a month. 99% of the time we use Fed Ex Ground using our AQHA membership discount.
Just shipped one on Tuesday from Michigan to Florida weighing 28# for $29. That was with insurance.
Most of the time UPS is a way too expensive because of the over size charge.

I have purchased 2 saddles that I paid the shipping.  Both came very quickly by USPS and for about 50 bucks.  No problems.

I have shipped a couple USPS--ask for Parcel Post instead of first class or priority. It takes a couple extra days to get there, but it cuts it down from $65 to $35-40. I think the last one I shipped was around $45, and that included $700 insurance.

When I sell a saddle the buyer always pays shipping. I always charge $60 and if shipping is over that I cover it. I keep my eye out constantly for large cardboard boxes behind Lowes, Home Depot, tractor dealerships, etc that are going to be thrown away and just throw them in my truck. I try to have 2 on hand at all times. I ship by USPS with insurance, parcel post....don't do priority or anything, those are expensive! I can ship anywhere on the east coast(I'm in TN) for under $60 but it usually cost at least $75 to ship to the west coast.

Research before shipping parcel post  if I was the buyer I would not be happy if my purchase was shipped parcel post    Pp is the last thing that fills a USPS truck  my post master explained it to me  can take 4 to 6 weeks   No tracking   Maybe cheap but the distance you are shipping it would take a long time

No, you now get tracking and $50 insurance on USPS parcel postage.

I didnt read all what the others had to say, but i hope that you asked for extra money for the shipping cost's. And the smaller the box the cheaper it is to ship, I always use a really tight box to ship. And I get insurance and ship with USPS, they are cheaper. I think I always payed around 65 to ship, for some reason it costs me more to ship out of Texas.

I shipped a saddle from Ohio to colorado Springs a year ago, via UPS through the local hardware store for just under $50 with signature tracking.   Go to a mom and pop place that ships UPS, don't use the UPS store.  The buyer paid for the shipping.  as for paypal fees, if the sender says that the money is a gift and they pay from their bank account it won't have paypal fee's.  There were no paypal fee's taken out on either end of our deal.  if they pay by credit card, their are fee's but right off the bat I said buyer to pay any paypal fee's

OK I appreciate the advice on buyer paying shipping etc, but its not necessary. We haven't settled on a total price yet because I have a number I want to actually get for the saddle and I'm keeping paypal fees & shipping costs in mind when it comes to my bottom line. I really just wanted to know what the secret was to shipping a saddle for less than $50.

USPS is my only option here because I don't go anywhere with UPS pickup and the nearest UPS hub is a full hour away. That's not worth the drive.

A few months ago I shipped a nice used silver show saddle from Arkansas to Michigan. Wrapped it tightly in bubble wrap, then cut down a good cardboard box to box it tightly and taped it up..... shipped it UPS for $48 and that included $1500 of insurance. This was a western show saddle.... that weighed 38 pounds before all of the packaging. It took it three days to deliver.
