| Trying to decide what vaccines to give. I know what I usually give but I feel that I am over vaccinating. I give the EVWT+rhino, WN and rabies. I will always give WN and rhino. #1 I live in southwest Louisiana and we have mosquitos. #2 I lost a horse to rhino about 6 years ago so that's one I will always give.
* Does a horse require a tetanus every year?
* Do you think they need a rabies every year or would you do it every other year?
* Do you feel we over vaccinate?

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I think tetnus is one of the most important. I give 4 or 5 way and west nile to my riding/hauling horses and stallion. Also give rabies as we have a lot of bats in the barn.
The broodmares get nothing and we have never had one abort to sickness. When we buy mares, they are from highfalootin breeding farms usually and have had everything under the sun. It's not for everyone, but works for ours as we don't haul them to farms to be bred. They all stay right here (except one I AI'd last year).
The babies/youngsters also don't get anything. Again, they never leave the place and we don't buy prospects so they aren't ever against any other horse. Not ever the riding horses that leave the place. Never had one with strangles etc. In all honesty, they are healthy and we have very very few vet bills a year except for my riding horses that like to break pelvis's and or if something gets cut that I can't take care of at home.
I am more concerned for the horses that leave the place and are around other snot nosed brats :)

Location: Montana | I give WNV+EWT and rhino/flu. If it is a horse that isn't going to be among other horses, just WNV+EWT. |

| Most everyone over vaccinates their horses .... due to heavy marketing and scary reports of manipulated data ....
there are 3 million horses in the USA and 10-100 horses per year being diagnosed with something does not make for a major disease outbreak ..... it is to sell you stuff your horse does not need .... otherwise there would not be 100,000 mustangs running loose and uncared for ...
The diseases listed in the following TRIPLE EFT are the only ones that give a horse any IMMUNITY to ANY HORSE DISEASES .... read and remember them ....>>>>
http://www.unitedvetequine.com/horse-vaccines/Fluvac-Innovator-Trip...
All the rest of the so called specialty vaccines do nothing but lowers the horses immunity fighting something that is totally unnecessary and does not offer any immunity at all ...
You can find the same language or similar language on all the highly marketed vaccines that do nothing .... read carefully and understand the words they are using .....
Vets standard reply is ..... I would recommend giving the shot it MIGHT reduce the affects if your horse catches such and such .......
Take note ... if any of these shots offered any immunity ... you would not be giving them constantly over and over again ... a lot of horses will get sick with something else due to the knock down of its immunity when these shots are given or end up with the disease ....
This is a killed vaccine that aids in the reduction of viremia caused by the West Nile virus. - See more at: http://www.unitedvetequine.com/horse-vaccines/equinile-horse-vaccin...
http://www.unitedvetequine.com/horse-vaccines/equinile-horse-vaccin...
For vaccination of healthy horses, 6 months of age or older, as an aid in the control of respiratory diseases caused by Equine Herpesvirus.

NO WHERE WILL YOU SEE THE WORD IMMUNITY IN THE FLY BY NIGHT VACCINES !!
As you are well aware of .... big marketing pushes are made on imaginary massive out breaks of these extra diseases to sell vaccines ...
IT'S YOUR MONEY ... SPEND IT HOWEVER YOU WANT TO ...
TRIPLE EFT ..
I give my weaners the standard 2 shots after they are 6 months old ... mares milk interferes with the vaccines ...
annual booster to yearlings and 2yo's going into training ...
anything else gets a booster if it is leaving my place for any reason a month++ prior to leaving date .... and
I will give any new horses TRIPLE EFT within a week of them arriving at my barn..... if they appear to be healthy and no sickness....
older stay at home horses ... nothing ...

I will give a tetanus shot if someone gets cut bad. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I will add that some of the vaccines I give, are to insured horses that are required to be vaccinated or they are not covered. West nile and Rabies are the big ones. If you have any horses insured, you might want to make sure you read and understand your policy (just in case). |

| Gosh i'm so confused! lol I really want to vaccinate cause we go to quite a few shows and if anything happened i would not forgive myself. Has anyone used the merck Prestige V and WNV combined?? I'm thinking of using it instead it gives it all in one shot plus just the rabies is separate. Ive always used fluvac pfizer brand but wondered about this brand ...has anyone used it.
