I have an 11 year old broodmare I bought last year.  She was off the track at age 3 and has been a broodmare since, I doubt that she was ridden after coming off the track.  I'm leaving her open this year and have been toying with the idea of sending her off to someone to make sure she's good and broke as a riding horse and then starting some training level dressage with her.  She's a beautiful mover and I enjoy dressage as an aside from barrels so thought this would be fun.  Has anyone ever had a mare in this situation and successfully turned them into a nice riding horse?

Yes I have done it to quite a few older mares.(6-12) The plus side is they seem to have their balance figured out so adding a rider isn't usually a big deal balance wise to them. I go a little slower with them but once they know something they know it! Also all of the baby sillyness is out. They can get frustrated easier and need patience showing what you want. Good Luck!! One of my best mares was 10 when she was started.
