Thanks Just Bring It!:

-Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have be thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.

-Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you'll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

-Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

-Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.

-During the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering to his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

-Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.

-Be happy to see him.

-Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

-Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

-Don't greet him with complaints and problems.

-Don't complain if he's late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.

-Make him comfortable. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

-Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.

-Don't ask him questions about his actions or question his judgment or integrity. Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

-A good wife always knows her place

I wish I'd been born back then, love the fashions, manners, and traditions. A lot of this I agree with...after all, who wants to hit the door first thing and listen to a list of complaints? The biggy that I disagree with is 'don't question him when he stay out all night.' Tom cats can stay in the alley with the garbage.

You trying to start a war ? It would be nice to be able to stay at home and do all of those things. I just don't think I could comply with a lot of that but he could wish in one hand.

Boy have things changed!! I agree with some things on that list, just as I think a man should do for his woman, but some of those are outdatedddd. It's a good thing we don't have to wear makeup when they come home from work or basically keep our mouths shut if we had somethin to say now!

So long as you make me kuchen like that last batch, I would allow you to go without makeup, but there's no compromising on the husband always being right.  It must be that way, otherwise there would be chaos.

I pretty much do all that for my hubby. He works hard so I don't have to. I make sure his laundry is done, the house is clean and he is very well fed. I look after the livestock and make everything from scratch. Hence why I have my farm complete with milk cows. I handle all the money and bills. So his only worries are man jobs and his job.  In return he allows me to have my horses and anything else my little heart desires.

Oh but the names I've been called..... lazy and a mooch by women who I considered friends. They look down on me beacuse I have choosen to be a housewife.

They don't exist they think a woman who isn't independant and doesn't work out side the home is Lazy.....It not their job to provide anymore!

Oh and Doc Who is Carol King?

Lol it's good being the good wife. Watching my mother and her friends slave at work and come home and slave some more didn't look like the "good life" to me. I listened to my great grandma and her advice in taking care of my home and my husband.

Tomorrow I'm baking cookies to send to him and his crew at work. I don't mind setting back the feminist movement.

Tomorrow I'm baking cookies to send to him and his crew at work. I don't mind setting back the feminist movement.

You and I are going to be about as popular as Fallon Taylor.

You are still young and there's always counseling and rehabilitation.

Every woman has the potential to be a good wife.  Don't give up.  Post this on your fridge every morning so you can read it while preparing his favorite breakfast....while wearing his favorite lengerie', of course.
It's not there's poor ladies fault, Doc.  A real man insists on these traditions and provides the rewards that makes it mutually beneficial.  Where have all the real men gone?

They don't exist they think a woman who isn't independant and doesn't work out side the home is Lazy.....It not their job to provide anymore!

On a serious note, I never understood why a woman choosing to fulfill a more traditional role was considered a bad thing in the feminist movement.  If that's what floats her boat, more power to her.  And to you.

blccwgl55 - 2014-01-14 7:51 PM Boy have things changed!! I agree with some things on that list, just as I think a man should do for his woman, but some of those are outdatedddd. It's a good thing we don't have to wear makeup when they come home from work or basically keep our mouths shut if we had somethin to say now!
 What's outdated?
LMAO!!!  TXBO to the rescue!  I knew he would show up.

I agree with most of it with the exception of "Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours." Oh, and I don't think I could deal with him staying out all night without warning...business trip: okay. Not coming home unitl 6 AM without telling me: big NO-NO.

I wouldn't mind doing most of those things as long as I get to have my dog, my horse, my car, my truck, my trailer, and my own way. LOL. Think there might be a reason I'm still single?

However, in all honesty, if I found the right guy, I would be more than happy to do that for him. But I feel like it is a two way street, a lot of give and take on both sides. I once had a boyfriend that had a theory about relationships. He thought that wouldn't it be nice if the best part of the day was when you came home to each other? No, I don't still have that boyfriend, but I couldn't agree with him more on that point.

you know what? I am with you...and I JUST found that guy and married him in September. He also: opens the door of the truck for me to get in (but learned that if he doesn't open it for me to get OUT, it does not mean I will stay there, Nor will I go if told to "get in the truck" if there's gonna be a ruckus.) He buys my dinner and sends flowers and things to the office, hooks up HIS truck to the trailer and drives my horses around, gives me his jacket if I am cold, INSISTS on stacking the hay or changing tires even though he knows I can do it myself, is never disrespectful towards me, holds the door open for ANY woman in a building, and offers his seat in a public place to an elder.

So, it doesn't bother me any to cook for him, do his laundry, or not ***** and moan first thing when he gets home. Our house is a mess because we are in the middle of moving, but the article is right, a less cluttered house makes you feel less crazy. I only wear make-up every now and then, but he does love how I clean up, and it's very cute to see him smile. It's worth it, ladies.

But if he stays out all night...he is WELL AWARE that I'm pretty handy with both the 12 gauge and the sheep castrator. LOL

And whoever has the milk cows...I'm JEALOUS!!!! Store milk is HORRIBLE. YUCK!!

I have a real man... He helps clean, cook, works, does homework with our daughter and will give us anything that he can. He never can tell the women of the house no. Now that's a real man! I take care of the bills and work and help with cleaning and cooking but he is never far way when I need him. He would rather I be able to stay at home and not have to work but were just not able to do that. I think he possess some of the older generation qualities a lot of men these day's should have. That even incudes when he's saying a woman' s place is in the Kitchen fix me something to eat woman. lol

equussynergy - 2014-01-14 8:33 PM I pretty much do all that for my hubby. He works hard so I don't have to. I make sure his laundry is done, the house is clean and he is very well fed. I look after the livestock and make everything from scratch. Hence why I have my farm complete with milk cow. I handle all the money and bills. So his only worries are man jobs and his job.  In return he allows me to have my horses and anything else my little heart desires.

Oh but the names I've been called..... lazy and a mooch by women who I considered friends. They look down on me beacuse I have choosen to be a housewife.

^^^^^^^^^I hope Carol King reads this. You are an excellent role model.

I was actually agreeing with most of it until I read the stay out all night part.  That could get you killed.  Just so you know.

Seriously, I think the radical women's movement killed them.  They were told that women wanted to do everything for themselves and the traditional roles were old fashioned.  The bible says that women are suppose to submit themselves to their husbands.  It also says that husbands are suppose to love their wives as Christ loved the Church.  Christ laid down his life and died for the Church.  I don't know a woman alive that would not be willing to do most anything for her husband if a man loved her that much.

This is my husband as well.

5 years ago, I was 8 months along with Amber. My husband asked me to quit working. Haven't gone back since. And I have had people ask "well what do you do all day?". Enter FACE PALM here. When hubby comes home, there is nothing for him to do but shower and relax. He works 6 days a week, and long hours. I love that when he comes home, his work is over. The laundry is clean, folded and put away. Everything dusted (and left with a pleasant lemon scent even!). The floors are vacuumed and/or mopped. Firewood's stacked. Animals are all taken care of. Ambers clean. Beds are made, bathrooms cleaned. Walkways are shoveled when it snows and I start his work truck every morning.

I enjoy making his life less stressful. In return, he goes to work. He provides Amber and I with the best life I can imagine. We have what we need and more. I get to have my horses and dogs. A nice trailer and truck. A house on a couple acres. I am blessed.

But if he brings his muddy boots in on my clean floors, you'll bet I have something pretty d*** important to say.

so much of the things in the beginning are something I would expect from a stay at home spouse of either gender...if one has the luxury of staying home, they should take care of the house and cook. both my husband and I have filled that role due to job loss (for short periods, once each).

but then it gets pretty subservient in the last few ideas and loses me. Like really? stay out all night? I laughed... some of the others were just silly also

I LOL'd at taking off his shoes... gtfo... I literally gag when my husband takes his work boots off across the room at our front door. at close range I would probably die.

Ditto to all of this.

I had a discussion with my mom not too long ago. My parents have been married for almost 25 years. My mom is a stay at home mom. She is glad that times are changing, and that both my sister and myself have more choices as to what to do with our lives. She waits on my dad hand and foot, runs his errands, and raised the two of us kids. My dad is a good man, no doubt, but I have decided that I do not want to live that kind of life. He doesn't pick up after himself, and when he does he blames us for his mess. He doesn't know how to turn most of the appliances in our house. LOL. Even though I believe that my parents have a pretty good marriage, and that my dad is a good man, I am not cut out for that life. I have helped my mom wait on my dad hand and foot and I don't like it at all. I hate the "He makes all the money, so we should treat him like royalty" mentality both my parents have and will not subject myself to that if I can help it. I will also never be made to feel like I have to "submit" and would never do that to someone else. Sorry, but NO.

In this day and age I also think that it is unfair to say that a "real" man has to be the sole provider in a relationship or marriage. A real man can be whatever he dam well pleases, just as a real woman can - just so long as he/she is a good person and productive member of society. Not sure why we have to resort to that kind of insult to prove any kind of point. I know several men who are stay at home dads. I have friends who had stay at home dads. Guess what? They turned out pretty well.

I don't care if you want to be a stay at home wife or mom. I think it is an honorable job if you want to do it and enjoy doing it. I will respect that choice, but I'd like to have the same courtesy.

Murphy - 2014-01-15 9:44 AM I'm a feminist, but not a "burn your bra" feminist (radical movement). I think it's a fairly easy concept to treat each other as equals and with respect.  That said, I'm pretty sure this article is an internet hoax, but I realize that may not be the point with some.
Guess what? I will respect that choice, but I'd like to have the same courtesy.

I feel blessed to have the best of both worlds.  I work, but I'm self employed and most of it I either do at home, or I can take the kids with me.  They love to help scout a field or drive equipment.  I have lots of down time in the winter, but I hate house work, so I procrastinate and play on the internet instead.

Three 4 Luck - 2014-01-14 9:20 PM  I can be happy to see him, and I can be verrrrrry interesting.  Sometimes I even have food cooked when he gets home.  Doesn't mean it's still hot, tho.  The rest? :-pppppppp I must have been in the barn when the "good wife" genes were being passed out.

That is too weird that you actually found a picture..

However, I will say, the basic's to the information that you posted is a good one.  Not the know your place, however, in some respects that also is true.   More people need to basically just "respect" the other person.  Male or female.  Know when to talk and when to keep your mouth shut.  I am probably the most independent/opinionated/hard headed person there is.  But, when I was a house wife, that was my job.  Marriage is a give and take, most people just aren't willing to take the time to find their own niche.  What is give and take for some, is different for others.  Each couple needs to decide what works for them.  We have always had a saying at our house - as long as it doesn't embarass you, hurt you emotioinally/physically, anything goes.  has worked now for 20 years.

I've always held an outside job - pretty good one too. I'm just turned that way - am not cut out to be a stay at home mom/wife. Good thing since I've been divorced and on my own for quite awhile. I've said before that I need a 'good wife'. It would be nice to have someone take care of the laundry, cooking, shopping, cleaning, etc. while I brought home the paycheck and did the heavy chores in the evenings and on weekends. Guys kind of look at me funny when I say that, but I don't mean it in a sexual way. LOL

I think women were sold a bill of goods when we were told that we "can have it all". It just created more work for us. Very few can work an 8 hour job, do all the household chores, shopping, take care of the kids and do justice to them all. IMO

My boyfriend gets home before me usually, AND I leave for work before him. Does that make this a role reversal?

Because if this was ALL expected of me the only fire he would come home to is his clothes on fire in the driveway.

Exactly. women kind of shot themselves in the foot. We didn't give up anything but sure added more to our plate. In most households the woman is still thought to be the one to cook, clean, take care of the kids, plus have an outisde job while the man gets to sit, watch TV and put his feet up after he gets home from work.

This isn't the case in my home but I know many homes just like this. I work from home and during the winter months I don't have much of a job at all due the nasty weather conditions so I do a lot of these things for my husband but like others I draw the line at what he has to say is more important, he can stay out all night, and know my place. But otherwise I feel my man works hard for me and has stress at work so I want our home to be his sanctuary where he can get away from it all and feel relaxed and happy. I want him to look forward to coming home to me every day. When he walks in the door I greet him, give him a kiss, ask him how his day was, he sits at the kitchen counter while I finish up dinner and he tells me about his day and I let him vent. After about 20 minutes of venting he is all mine and we just enjoy each other. I will add that many times he will ask if I need him to do anything such as help with supper or dishes but I always tell him that I have it under control and he can just relax. I would expect him to do the same for me if I was working away from home and he didn't.

I also want to add that when I came across this "good wife guide" I also read an article about how chivalry is dead. Well I will say in my relationship it is not. I am not a "prideful" or insecure woman that feels offended when a man gets a door for me. I find it as a compliment. My husband gets my car door for me quite often and I step aside when we get to doors so he can open them for me. My husband will open doors for others, he will help an old lady with bags, he knows when he is in the wrong and will apologize right away, he helps clean the house if I ask him to, he cleans the toilets, he irons his own clothes (we only iron on certain occasions such as church clothes or a dinner party, etc), he pushes the snow around the yard, helps do chores, and the list could go on and on. So you are darn right I have no problem trying to be a "good wife". Why would I not when I have such a GREAT man.

I'm sure if you are nice about it he will understand and allow you enough time to get dinner ready and put on some fresh makeup.

Just Bring It - 2014-01-15 12:56 PM
MO gal - 2014-01-15 12:31 PM I've always held an outside job - pretty good one too. LOL I think women were sold a bill of goods when we were told that we "can have it all". It just created more work for us. Very few can work an 8 hour job, do all the household chores, shopping, take care of the kids and do justice to them all. IMO
Exactly. women kind of shot themselves in the foot.

He's a good man, I know.  I can see you have all the key ingredients of a dutiful, obedient wife.

The first man married a woman from the North. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.
The second man married a woman from the West. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.
The third man married a girl from the Louisiana. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees.

I do a whole lot of the household-ey type chores, plus do most of the book keeping and bill paying, organizational duties, you name it. Most of it I do because: I am not too good to do it, and I don't like making my husband feel like I don't think he can do a good job, but I like things a certain way. It's just easier on both of us to do them. I do get 'stuck' with a whole lot of the household chores. It takes a GREAT deal of harping to get him to lift a finger.

However, the last time I was screaming in my head putting his laundry away, I looked out my window and he was unloading and stacking the 35 bales of hay I brought home, then he fed the horses, unhooked my horse trailer, and took my truck to town and washed it. Well played husband, well played. Laundry done without argument.

For the stuff I can't bring myself to do, and do my horse stuff, and maintain a happy boss at work, and run around just being happy bubbly lil me, I have the most wonderful cleaning lady. She' comes once a week. Love her and will probably never be without a cleaning lady again as long as I can find one! I find that with her help, I am a badass wife/co-breadwinner/barrel horse enthusiast with a wonderful attitude towards my honey!!

Today's wife has much to do, in which includes many roles in her life: wife, mother, teacher, employee, co-worker, and friend. She's much to busy to sit at home preparing dinner for her man everyday, and making sure the children are quiet when he walks in the door after a hard day at work. She also has had a hard day at work, be it in the work place, working from home or the hardest job of them all - raising children.

Pick up the children from daycare. Sometimes she has to work late too and could use the extra few minutes for a breather. This lets her know you are thinking of her and care about her needs.

Have dinner prepared. Let her know you are concerned for the way she feels after work, have her favorite dish ready.

Prepare yourself. Take a few minutes to de-funk yourself after your hard day at work. Remember, those times of closeness, she doesn't want to smell the rottenness of the day.

Clean the children. Get their baths done early so family time isn't bothered with a bunch of 'must-do’ before bedtime.

If you want to go out for the night, check with your wife, she might have plans. After all, someone does need to watch the children. There also might be a dinner function the two of you need to attend. Going with her to a career dinner lets her know you care about her work as well as your own.

Over the cold months, you should start a fire so she has a nice warm place to come to at the end of her day. Your wife will feel as if she's reached a haven of peace.

Over the hot months, make sure the air conditioner is in excellent condition. Nothing adds to a stressful day more than heat.

Be happy to see her, not just have a pencil in your pocket, and be really happy to see her. Let her know she is the only one for you. Greet her with warmth and respect.

Listen to her. Her problems are just as important as yours are, if not more so. Let her speak first; adhere to the rule, ladies first.

Make the evening hers. Run her a bubble bath, so her relaxation can continue on, pour her a glass of wine or her favorite beverage. Spark a few candles around the tub; it's a big gesture that will take you a long way.

Don't complain. She works just as hard as you do, if not more so. Children are hard work to raise and dealing with them all day is stressful.

Speak soothingly to her at all times. The worst is having a man's rough, harsh voice raised about something that is of no importance.

Don't ask questions you don't want answers to. Don't judge her.

Be respectful. This goes both ways and is a huge rule in life to get carry through on.

Be trustful. A wife needs a husband she can believe and doesn't need to worry about his running around doing "single" things. Always remember, 'what is good for the goose is good for the gander'.

Pick up after yourself. You married her for a reason and it wasn't to have her become your slave.

Think of her. Give her a back message releasing the week’s worth of stress from her body. Be nice; let her relax-without having to get a piece of action out of the deal.

Women belong in the home.  They should be allowed to work, provided they are capable of meeting their domestic obligations.

Introduction and summary: Submissive homemaker

  1. Manager of the home, under the oversight of her husband. (The wife is the manager of the home, but the husband is the manager of the wife.)
  2. Primary role revolves around the daily care of children, meal preparation and keeping the house clean and in order.
  3. She is free to take on additional roles and responsibilities by getting a job. Such a job is optional, whereas for the husband, it is mandatory. Her optional choice to take on a job does not suddenly obligate the husband to take on part of the wife's role of child care or keeping house.
