I realllly realllly need to start eating healthy....especially since I'm not riding lately I feel like I've gained myself a few extra pounds and I feel sluggish and tired all the time. I look at all the healthy eating things on Pinterest but they are always weird things or have things I don't like in them.
Who is eating some easy healthy meals and can tell me how to make it and what to buy? I am attracted to very bad foods and I could eat all day long and sometimes I do. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Just start with baby steps:  Lots of vegetables, lean meat and very limited bread, pasta and rice.  Try to cut out sugar and sodas.  I really like using Quinoa to fill the void of pasta and bread.  Pretty good stuff if you mix it with vegetables.  Use olive oil for cooking.  Try to reduce processed food.

One meal at a time….

My advice is to go back to basics. The closer to nature your food is, the healthier it is. By this, I am saying to cut out the processed crap. You didn't say what your diet currently is, but start with cutting out all soda (diet too), getting rid of refined sugars and flours, and not eating anything you get through a drive-thru or can eat from a box.

Increase your lean proteins, whole grains, and fruits and veggies.

Other than that, it all comes down to calories in vs. calories out. Granted not all calories are created equal. 100 calories from a donut will be readily converted to sugar and stored as fat, whereas 100 calories from lean chicken is broken down into amino acids, which are the building blocks for bodily functions.

One of the easiest meals we have at our house is lettuce wraps....and I cheat on prep. I buy a preroasted chicken and shred it up (remove all the skin). The wrap part is romaine lettuce. I then top it with salsa, tomatoes, avocado, olives, cheese, etc. Whatever sounds good.

The healthier you eat, the easier it will become. Also, the healthier you eat, the less tasty the bad foods will taste.

I've been eating much better for two weeks now. Water only. I've been working with a personal trainer too. I've lost the "puffiness" in my stomach, and I've lost one pound last week. I do feel better, but I can only imagine how I'll feel in a month, or six months.

It's easy when I'm home to eat healthy. I just went to Kroger and bought a bunch of fruits, veggies, chicken, tuna, and rice. If you have trouble eating away from home, then try prepping your meals. I don't do anything fancy because I just started. I eat a lot of peanut butter for protein with apples and bananas. Protein will keep you full. It's much easier once you start and make it a habit.

My go to meals are steamed veggies, and bake chicken or salmon.
I try and have a salad too. I love rice and pasta so I try and cut that out. I've replaced most of my pop with ice tea, unsweetened has 0 calories.

There are a lot of great sauce recipes out there that use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.

I love overnight oatmeal for breakfast. Google it, lots of recipe variations

Brown rice cooked in chicken stock is much better than brown rice cooked in water - just watch the sodium. I am not an organic nut by any means but found a local health food store to have very cheap low sodium organic chicken stock, like significantly lower sodium than anything else I had found.

There are some good whole wheat pastas out there.

Make sure you have a good spice cabinet at your disposal. Fat and grease taste good, so they don't need as much seasoning. But healthy food does not have to be a dry piece of bland chicken breast of you know how to cook it.

Alas...I have given up my love of potatos. I could eat them for every meal....

I have replaced them with sweet potatos and kale chips...

If I want a snack...instead of potato chips I make kale chips or go for a greek yogurt, or an apple with peanut butter.

If I am making dinner and need a side....if I don't have rice I go for a sweet potato.

I have just started on this eating healthy journey as well and this article made it seem so simple to me.  I try each day to limit sweets (which I LOVE)  and eat lots of fruits and vegatables and I am also cutting way down on the processed foods I eat.

stick to natural foods.. no seasoning no stuff no gravy no nothing.. fresh chicken breast.. you can add baby leaf lettuce to it and broil.. steamed veggies.. and water.. NO other gunk.. think of it as this.. every bad thing that goes in your body will clog it and weigh it down and you are what you eat..
eat fresh raw and natural..I dont understand why people put all the stuff on the food.. its meant to be enjoyed in its own natural way.. not smothered in gunk. if you have to smother it.. you must not like it.
few weeks you will feel much better and your body will love you.

I'm the same way. I try to eat healthy, but I have trouble sticking to a plan. My new favorite saying/diet(lifestyle) quote is " Try to eat recipies with 5 or less ingredients. It is from a paleo website, but it is something easy for me to remember and repeat when I go for a meal or snack. Good Luck. I'm enjoying reading your post.

I need to start making things to take to work with me. I always just end up snacking on what the kids eat. I just love me some ice cold Pepsi! That's going to be the hardest! Thanks for all the advice so far! I know once I get the hang of it, it will be great and I will feel better but it's so much easier to eat bad lol

I would like to eat healthier too, but my biggest problem is: I hate almost all vegetables, especially cooked or boiled!!! I can't eat them, will gag and can't swallow......
Been like that since I was a little kid. Used to drive mom crazy, but now she sees I really can't eat them... And I absolutely love bread, rice and pasta's.... I don't really eat a lot of fast food, so that's good, but other than that.....I need help!!!!

stay to the outside of the grocery store, fruit, veggies, meat (chicken, fish (yuck)), egg whites, greek yogurt (plain with fruit and a little hney = yummieness)

WATER - I read somewhere most everyone is dehydrated, and that makes you gain 8lbs a year. Tha's crazy. I measure my water when I first get to work, then I know that 2.2L container needs to be gone before I go home. Do the same thing when I get home.

If you really love your carbonated drinks you could try to switch to a little cranberry or pineapple juice with club soda or sparkling water. I'm not a fan of water, but I keep a jug of water with lemon and lime slices in it and I'm addicted to that. Also if you just try to keep processed foods out of your house and cook all your meals from scratch, even cook ahead and freeze for the days you run out of time to cook so you aren't tempted to order out. Homemade soups are great. You can just keep throwing things in the pot until you are happy with the results. I also hardboil a dozen eggs at a time and keep them in the fridge for snacking on. Eggs are almost the perfect food, and even with a little garlic salt sprinkled on a hardboiled egg, it's a much better choice than chips. I also make my own homemade hummus which is great for dipping veggies in. I find the key for me is to have healthy snacks ready when I want something.

You've gotten good pointers whole foods, water,.......sorry if I'm repeating something already mentioned!

Start off by doing a food diary for a week, with how you currently eat, be honest WRITE down everything! Review it at weeks end and see how terrible or not you eat, you may have to just remove a little and adjust.

DO NOT get over whelmed with thinking you have to go buy every fruit & veggie at the grocery store, pick the vegetables or fruit you like and stick with them. The internet is a great source for healthy recipes...and there are lots of Facebook groups as well.

if you really are stuck find a dietitian to help you even with a meal plan idea.

Keep in mind, changing your lifestyle is 95 % mental, so getting your mind game right is so key in making it successful.

You can do it, and a bad day does NOT make you a failure......

I would give this advice to anybody or at least give it a try.  Nutribullet.......mix your favorite fruits with veggies and the taste of the fruit will overpower the veggies.  You're getting tons of nutrition in one drink that goes down quickly whether you like the taste or not.  I personally love it.  I mix  spinach, carrots, banana, walnuts or almond, a little kale, cucumber.  It's great.  Invent your own.

My husband and I just started our New Year's diet at the beginning of last week. We are basically shooting for a low carb type of diet at the recommendation of our doctor. We eat lots of meats like steak, porkchops, and chicken. I also make a mean pot of beef and cabbage (with ground beef & a herb/garlic marinade). We eat lots of veggies, some frozen and some fresh. (One of our secrets to not getting too bored is to try different kinds of veggies from the farmer's market we haven't tried before). We even have pasta but it is the low carb type that only has like 5 g of digestible carbs and we limit ourselves on that. I'm a big soda fan as well, but I'm not drinking any of that. Instead I get bottled water and add the Mio flavorings. (I can't stand bottled water by itself because it tastes like plastic). The Mio sweetens the water and is one of my sweet things. I even allow myself a piece or two of hard candy occasionally when I really want sugar but no more than a piece or two. I'm never hungry. My calories per day (according to my carb assistant app) vary from 1400 to 2100, but my carbs always stay below 50. I lost 8 lbs this last week. You always lose the most weight the first week of a diet. I expect this to balance out to around 1-3 lbs starting this week or next.

I would probably committ a crime to get a hold of McDonald's sweet tea, so once I week I make that part of my cheat meal. However, after 6 days of water only, when I do drink the sweet tea, I feel terrible. It makes me wired and I just feel funny. So, I just don't drink them anymore because I hate the way they make me feel now. You may get to that point too.

I am muncher too and have problems with portion control. When I need to drop some I make sure to eat fruit for breakfast and maybe some corn flakes. The snack size ziploc baggies hold about 1 cup of corn flakes cereal and that equals 100 calories so I would take one of those with me for a mid morning snack. They make you eat slow bc of the size and really do fill you up.

For lunch I would eat a small salad with small amount of dressing- I really like to add cilantro to the salad- gives flavor and lessens the amount of dressing. Lettuce or spinach, tomatoes, cucumber, cilantro, and light italian dressing and it is pretty good! Then I would eat a progresso soup- only 150 calories and they also are pretty good about filling you up. I would take some berries for a sweet ending to the meal.

Afternoon is more fruit or some veggies if you like them. Sometimes I would munch on some pita chips and hummus bc I LOVE that stuff but you have to watch portions on that.

Dinner- use a Foreman grill or outdoor grill. I would do some veggies and a chicken breast. Or some fish tacos on corn tortillas are really good- tilapia you can get in single serve packets and that makes two tacos. Just put some water in a skillet and put the filet in- season as you like- stay away from salt. The water should just come up half way up the fish.
- Another trick is to use different diced tomato flavors- put them in a skillet with some chicken breasts and cover, turn over part way. 3/4 done uncover and let continue to cook until the juices dry up. The chicken stays moist and the left over tomatoes are roasted and give a good sauce/cover for the chicken.

I quit drinking soda and limited salt- both make me more hungry. Drink lots of water or unsweet tea with a little bit of sweeter. The big thing I did was every few days I would allow something not in the routine to mix it up.

Since I quit drinking beer apparently I LOVE sweets so the snack size ice creams or skinny cow were great to help. Also dark chocolate helped me- gave me the sweet but didn't make me want to chow down on it.

Sugar and Starches are the enemy!

Fat is your friend!

I ate healthy, whole grains, veggies, and lean meat and gained weight(150).
Now I eat really healthy. Organic veggies(home grown) and grass fed meat with tons of grass fed fat and I'm back to my high school weight (120). I don't entirely avoid grains but if I decide to have them I make sure they are sprouted or soured.

I also eat less because the fat is filling and the food is nutrient dense.

While some people can make HUGE instant changes, most people don't have the willpower to sustain that.

BABY STEPS. Cut out pop, and 100% of fast food. From what it sounds, those will be hard on their own. Keep water with you at all times. Water can be amazing at helping you feel less hungry and help cravings. Just drink drink drink.

I have found that cutting out those things, and cooking 99% of meals from scratch (even though they aren't all healthy) has made a HUGE difference in how I feel, and is sustainable...forever.

Yes!  We had to start eating to manage my son's blood sugar issues--he's 8, so we all signed on to make things easier.  I figured out quickly that the low carb diet with 6 meals a day the doc recommended was not working for him.  The keys are exactly what you said:  a balance of protein, carbs, and (healthy) fats for EVERY meal, and staying away from refined things like white bread, sugar, and white rice.  A piece of fruit and some cheese make the perfect snack for him.  Breakfast is usually homestyle oats with raw honey, a big glob of butter, a few dark chocolate chips and an egg.  We have all been sick since starting this, but it seems like there has been a lot less crud in our house and everyone recovers faster when they do get something.

I feel for you. I've gained ~20 pounds in the last year. Ironically...I've been without a kitchen & since March. I'm of the opinion there's a major connection there. If I want to eat, I either have to eat something that comes out of a fridge or is in a box/shelf. Or walk across the drive to my folks' house. Technically I could have fruit lying around but it all has to be stored in my living room. SO, yeah. I eat a lot of fast food, delivered pizza, snack foods & garbage.

Ironically, when I was at my fittest/lightest I was riding every day, running barrels 3-5 days a week, on the go go go all the time. The ironic part is that my diet consisted of slim jims, potato chips, Mountain Dew & Arby's. Not kidding.

I need a kitchen so I can go back to making dinner from scratch. I love to cook & am relatively good at it. I also love fresh veggies from the garden & fruit, when I remember to buy it. SO & I would be SO much healthier!

Glad your finding what will work......

its truely  trial and error (with healthy food) as to what will work, I am gluten free (have been for 13 years, so before it was "in") and I lean towards Paleo, BUT not totally because I like my cheese occasionally (Apple and cheese can't beat it lol) and my GF oatmeal and rice I enjoy....

I do best to lose a few pounds on "lower" carb too but I'm not much of a fan of meat so its hard. I do eat greek yogurt, cheese, eggs, vegetables, and some fruit but I'd love to hear what other lower carb people eat besides meat. Congrats on the weight loss!

Nuts, nut butters, cheese, eggs, beans. Quinoa has a good bit of protein.  We eat a lot of fish too.

I've gained about 10 lbs since early fall, mostly due to not riding a lot and work stress. The end of Nov I decided to give up coke zero which I craved and all breads and limit things like pasta, white rice and potatoes.

I used to crave things so bad (like my pop) but since I pretty much gave up bread (flour) my cravings are pretty much gone. I've only lost a few pounds but considering I came through Christmas with no big gain ill take it.

I eat lean meats, we raise our own beef so I do eat quite a bit of it. Veg., and fruit. I also allow myself oatmeal. Apples or grapes with peanut butter is my new go to snack. I actually pack it with me most places I go.

stay to the outside of the grocery store, fruit, veggies, meat (chicken, fish (yuck)), egg whites, greek yogurt (plain with fruit and a little hney = yummieness)

WATER - I read somewhere most everyone is dehydrated, and that makes you gain 8lbs a year. Tha's crazy. I measure my water when I first get to work, then I know that 2.2L container needs to be gone before I go home. Do the same thing when I get home.

I agree with this. Stay out of the middle isles.
I have refined my eating habits and am working out regularly. With a college football player as my better half, we have a support team going on. Breakfast is normally a greek yogurt with some sort of portioned granola with flax seed( I like the KIND brand). Snacks are bananas with natural peanut butter. Lunch and dinner are normally some veggies with either fresh fish or chicken that is baked. I think the biggest thing is to being healthy is not cheating yourself. If you're hungry, eat! but eat right. I don't drink anything except water. I do flavor it with lemon or cucumber moderately. If I want something hot, I have hot water...

A tip I was told, if it has a nutrition label, don't eat it.  With a few exceptions, nothing I buy has a food nutrition label- whole foods do not need them- fruits, veggies, etc.

I'm needing to shed some pounds too.  One thing a friend told me a while back was to each Italian dressing with my salad and to mix it with water so that it goes further.  I can't eat straight Italian since I've started that.  It also saves you calories since you won't be eating as much dressing to mask the taste of the salad.  (Can you see why I have a hard time losing weight?!  I don't like salads.

A lot of lean meats and fish, salad, vegetables.  Quinola cereal and almond milk in morings.  I get a handful of nuts in the afternoons a lot of times.  Don't cook so works for me.  Read labels fat is good in moderation but sugar watch out it is poison.

I have found this too. I stick to greek yogurt, find the one with the lowest sugar which is usually no name brand, go figure. and Plain yogurt then I add fruit or honey. I like stuff I can read all the ingredients. I have a heck of a time with noodles, trying to pick the best one. But when there's a 4 year old in the house who likes noodles you just do the best you can.

I have always been a pretty healthy eater, and I can hardly eat processed meat anymore, for it makes my stomach hurt BAD! I want to start doing protein shakes or fruit/veggie smoothies to take place of a meal during the day. I am super busy with school and go to clinic a lot so I feel this would be good for breakfast or lunch. Do yall have any tips/recipes for shakes??

Also, what is Quiona? (or how do you spell it??) Is it a bean??

I have really been trying to eat healthy lately.  I have a pretty limited diet, but its foods that I enjoy!  Breakfast I have either a Greek yogurt or a plain rice cake with raw peanut butter.  Lunch is a 4-5oz chicken breast (no breading just seasonings and pan seared) with a green veggie (zucchini/green beans/asparagus) and either the same thing for supper (alternate veggies) or a turkey burger, no bun, with a salad.  I try to drink at leasat 64oz of water a day, and will have an occasional cup of coffee in the morning!  I have a pretty busy work day so I dont have much room for snacking, but Ill take an apple or some rice cakes with me to munch on.  I'm trying to cut out all sweets, but do cheat sometimes

The I do cheat sometimes I think is key. Or when you binge on crap, mine would be cereal. Could eat a whole box of that stuff. You don't let the rest of your day go to waste you just pick yourself up and next meal you do better.

If you buy the right yogurt, it will have a small amount of natural sugars that come from milk but no sugar added.  Natural forms of sugar are not nearly as bad as refined sugars. You want to keep in mind they are there, so you can properly balance meals, but you don't have to avoid.

Quinoa is a pseudo-grain, a seed from South American grass. We use it like rice. This was my tip of the day yesterday, after using my Nutribullet for the first time: follow the recipes they give you until you get the hang of it because adding bell peppers was a very bad idea. LOL
