I've decided to purchase a 5 Star pad, but I'm undecided on thickness. I want to either go with the 3/4" or the 7/8".... what do y'all suggest and why?

It will primarily be used just for basic riding until I start running again, but I hate to buy two (one for pleasure and one for performance).

Thanks!

I've always used 1" pads, so 7/8" wasn't too far off and wasn't a huge jump.  I rope, and I felt more comfortable ordering the 7/8.  But, I've never seen the 3/4 in person so it might be ok too....

No body can tell you what you need without seeing your horse, how is your horse built, how does your saddle fit?If your saddle fits good then you dont need anything thicker then a 3/4, most of my 5 Stars are the 3/4, I do have a 1/2 inch ordered, my saddles fit really good. Just depends on what you want and how your saddle fits. Talk to Deanna on here {Rockyroad} she can help you the best out of anybody on here, shes the dealer for 5 Stars pads.

I have both 3/4 and 7/8 and I use them according to how my saddles fit on each horse.

I really don't think there's enough of a difference between the 2 to really worry about it, I have & use both.

I have several 7/8 and love them. Also have a 1" and hubby has a 1 1/4". I just found a horse that had fat withers and my saddle seems to fit decent, but the extra thickness of the 7/8" makes it not. So I just got a 1/2". Might try it out today. I finally took the big step and got cowhide leathers!!!

How does your saddle fit?  If it fits well then you don't need much pad.  If its a little on the wide side then a thicker pad.  I have all thicknesses and switch around accordingly to different horse/saddle combinations.

I'd say my saddle fits my gelding pretty good. He has no dry spots, sores or atrophy. He does have an attitude when I ride him, but I'm gonna say that it's more related to a 7 year break.

I believe I will go with the 3/4" and contact Rockyroad!

Thanks everyone!

I love your corner patch. I really thought of doing that with my initials and the barbwire, but I have a hard time with change. So I did the same brand like I have on all my others. Love your cowhide color too!

Thanks OP as I had questions about the 5 stars and I have been on the fence about these ... I now blame all of you for showing me gorgeous pictures and convincing me that this is the pad I need as my old air-ride is wore the heck out.

Thanks all!

I've got a 1/2" and it works great with my saddle with Red.

May be ordering a 3/4" to 7/8" for my 3-year-old as he's not quite as filled out as Red for my saddle fit. Plus he needs his own pad anyway.

Here is one of mine that I had done in Cowhide too...

Love it!!! That's the color I want to do (pad wise), just need to make a decision on the leather!!

May I ask what color your leather is? I think I want to go just a tad lighter to match my saddle since I don't have anything cowhide.

Thank you... this one is done in the Brindle hair on hide. This is the natural gray pad, I love this color because it looks good with any color leather you want. I have a few more done up in the lighter wear leathers, go to the web site and you can see the different colors of leather you can use, I think any color looks good against this gray. 5 Stars wool pads. Or go to the sale paige and click onto the banner at the top, you can see all the neat pads. Did you talk to Deanna yet {Rockyroad} ?
The Banner at the top of the paige is called Horse N Around Tack.  And there is all kinds of info that you can find. I think my new one that I am getting is going to be the Black wear leathers, it should be here today, and I cant wait

All of mine are the heather gray or natural colored pads except one and that's hunter green which you can't get any longer.  I love the natural because if you put it with black it looks gray and if you put it with brown it looks like a lt tan.  I always wanted the maroon, red or blue but always ordered natural.  I'm weird that way.  LOL

Southtxponygirl - 2014-01-23 7:15 PM Here is one of mine that I had done in Cowhide too...

I'm building one now on 5Star site.. and I just took picture of logo I want. But I'm afraid the more I look the more picky I will be. lol! About to PM her! I'm so excited. My poor Classic Equine is pretty much worn out!

Oh you will love your 5 Star, I have like 7 of them in different thickness, and different colors of the wear leathers. And cant wait for my new one to get here

Sounds like an addiction!! ;) ;)

I hope I can settle for just one... for now!

I started off with just black, have 3 of those all with our brand. Then I bought a blue one right before they quit making them, with my brand as well. Then I bought a green one from someone from facebook. Then I found a well used black one for my kids, but it was too short so sold it to buy this 1/2" one with the cowhide. I also bought a bigger 1/2 natural colored one to use under my show pads/saddle. Yep, I'm addicted. If they ever made a purple one, I'd be all over that like a baby in a topless bar

bad weather in south TX?
I have had our UPS guy show up (17 miles of dirt road into my house) when it is a borderline blizzard and 8" of snow blowing across the road.  I bet he'd love to work down there. Would be like a vacation. Hope you get it soon. It's like Christmas all over again when they show up!!

It was really bad here, there was ice all over the highways, we dont have the salting for our highways like they do up north, and the overpasses were really bad, here in Seguin we had a really bad pile up going over the river on IH 10. I still have ice hanging off my roof, and this dont happen in south texas much, the last time this happen was 3 years ago.
But the good news is my pad just got here and its so pretty, Yi-Peeee for me

We lived in Gainesville for a few months years ago. They had one of the worst winters ever at the time. Go figure lol!

One morning we woke up and it was snow and ice everywhere. We just sucked it up, put on our bibs hats and gloves and went to working colts. No one showed up all morning, until someone finally came and got us and said we were all supposed to go out for breakfast. Guess they all thought it was too cold to work so took the morning off.

We were the only ones on the entire place that had winter clothes.
I have never seen ice like that though. TX and I guess OK get some really crazy ice storms.

Stay safe!!!
