I am a big fan of ground flax for my horses hooves and shiny coat. I feed 1 cup per day of ground flax but recently got to thinking.......wouldn't I be better off just feeding flax oil since the oil is what we're after anyway? Thoughts on this?

With whats available to me its much cheaper to feed the milled flax as opposed to the oil, and the benefits are still there so thats what I stick with!

The stability of flax oil is not as long, and it may need to be kept in a cold dark place, I can't remember for sure

i agree with cheryl...i believe you loose stability (basically once you crack the seed, thats my opinion not hers....lol).........thats why i feed whole flax only.......

I've tried feeding the ground vs whole flax seeds.

I saw the same results. So I just leave them whole.

Not nearly as messy and my horses eat the ground better than any oil, plus the seeds are cheaper here.

because the oil doesn't keep (can become rancid and unhealthy) and because as soon as the seed is cracked it starts to loose it's beneficial properties.

How long does healthy coat stay good in an unopened bottle? Can not find an expiration date on the bottle.

For me, I buy whole and grind it every day myself...just in the am, a cup per horse.  But I also use if for other things.  In Florida, no matter where you are sand is part of your pasture.  The seeds produce a geletine like substance in the intestines that helps pick up sand in the gut and exit with the poop.

I started it here and had one horse that would not eat the pre ground stuff...so I got the whole.  Just still do it that way because it's cheaper.

I also add a cup of Flax seeds whole to my water tanks.  I discovered by accident that do something to the algae.  I put a cup in about every couple months and every month in the summer...NO ALGAE, it's weird but I like it.

edited to add, I loved Healthy Coat, but I could not really afford it and the seeds replace the bran and sand clear for me...everyone just gets the ground seeds every day.

50lbs of Flaxseed costs me $30.

I feed 1 cup per day to each horse. So it lasts a good long time. Just seems more cost efficient to me.

I get flax for $30 per 50 lb bag too but if the oil from the flax is what we are trying to get from feeding it you'd get a whole lot more oil from even one ounce of flax oil than you'd ever get from one cup of flax seed wouldn't you?

The seeds themselves, the hulls, are full of fiber.

Flax seed is a whole food. Flax seed oil is just an oil. Most people that eat flax eat is as the whole seed or as ground seeds. They use it for fiber content and of course the omega-3 and omega-6s found in them.

If all you want is shine, get the oil. If you prefer having a few extra benefits added on top, like fiber and some minerals, then feed the seeds.
