Do you prefer a roping saddle or a barrel saddle when starting colts? All I've ever rode in and used for everything is a barrel saddle so I don't know if you're a little more secure/safe in a roping saddle when it comes to starting colts or if it doesn't make a difference.

I like a combination type saddle. Vega, has a nice one that I feel secure in. I also have an old Crates saddle that I used to cut in that has seen many colts. Once their going good and I'm ready to pull a log and hold a flag I'm riding them with my old Ammerman roping saddle. I've used a more "open swelled" barrel trophy saddles too.

We use either deep ranch type saddles or barrel saddles for colt starting. your typical team roping type saddle isn't going to hold you in very well. My husbands favorite colt saddle is a barrel saddle that he has taken the horn off. He has a night latch on it and loves it. Says riding in it is like riding in his saddle bronc saddle. No horn to get hooked on or land on! Lol

Rope saddle by far. I won't ride anything that I know may have a hump or that I don't trust in my barrel saddle. I honestly can't stand most barrel saddles. I just use it at races. I have always ridden in mostly rope saddles so I guess just what I am more comfortable in.

I prefer a barrel saddle with a low cantel. I don't have to lift my leg so high to clear the cantel if i needed to get on quick or off quick. The cutting saddle may work.
