do they work? do your horses play with them or leave them alone?
this is my third tank heater this winter that screws in on the bottom and I'm really tired of trying to crack a frozen 70 gallon tank to get one out to put a new one in.

I have floaters and sinkers. All work. and the only horses that play with them are the young geldings. And only when the hay is gone cuz my pastures are small and there is not much else for them to play with once that is gone. If you can find them with the slinky like wire around the cord they play with them less.
Also if the sun is going to be shining and its going to be above about 25 degrees I just unplug and pull them in the mornigns so I don't even have to worry about it. That is usually about half the winter. NOT THIS WINTER!!! but usually. :)

We have 3 of them and my horses dont bother them at all. However everyone here now is older. Years ago when we had a bunch of youngsters, we used the sinking heaters and in the colts water trough, we just put the sinking heater cord on the corner of the tank, and wired a small square piece of plywood to the top of the tank to cover that 1/4 of the tank to protect it and secure the cord.

I have a sinking one that I just replaced with a new screw in the bottom of the tank kind. It shuts off when the temp reaches 40 degrees. Both kinds my older mare has left alone. My young gelding on the other hand - gets to them occasionally - by pulling the cord out from the socket. I have a shutoff switch to the outlet and so far so good.

We have one that sinks, the one trough waters horses and our calves and they all leave if alone.
We have to clean ours off once in a while but so far it has worked good. And much nicer than having multiple water holes in the canal to chop.

So far so good with my sinking heater. It has the slinky plastic cover over the cord and my mare nosed it a few times the first time I put it in her tank and hasn't been interested since. It's in a 40? gallon rubber barrel and melted four inch thick ice the first time I used it. i broke up the ice and dropped it in.

I use the sinking heater and run the cord through a piece of pvc pipe and out the fence, to keep the horses from playing with the cord or pulling the heater out.

My colt does......I use a caged tank heater and everyday I would go out to feed......the dang heater would be on the ground outside the tank. Finally I duct tapped that baby down...no more issues! haha
