Location: SE Louisiana | Has anybody heard from Jennifer today? I know she has been under an ice storm for the last 10-12 hours.. It will be here soon.. I have to laugh at the people here... New Orleans is under a state of emergency because they might get 1/2 an inch of snow/sleet... I'm 40 miles south of there and they are shutting this town DOWN at 5PM under threat of frozen bridges.. I come from up north where we sometimes have frost thicker than 1/2 an inch.... See ya tomorrow!! |

I'm near Beaumont and they've pretty much shut every road down that has an overpass....unreal....and on top of that, I work downtown in a high rise building and they made us take off work today because of the roads.....I've lived in Portland Oregon and Montana and the guys on the Weather Channel act like we are having a blizzard.....A little sleet and a very few snow flurries......it's hilarious. |

So light it all blew off of my truck in the 10 minutes it took for me to drive to the store. And it was for naught... the HR person didn't come to work today. Granted she lives a hour away down I20 in Louisiana, but yeah... didn't come to work. Also failed to let anyone know she had an appointment scheduled with me or answer her cell phone when they tried to reach her to find out what they were supposed to do with me.
The LA/MS 2014 Snowmageddon is one for the record books.
PS School was closed today here in Vicksburg. I have a feeling they'll find a reason to close it tomorrow too due to windchill. LOL

It Is shut down, last time we seen significant
Amounts of anything such as ice or snow was
In early 1980's. We don't have equipment
Or supplies to keep the roads safe during freezing times.
I personally rather be off these roads and safe
In my house than have to drive in it and put myself and others
In danger who might be trying to assist those in need. And besides I don't want to be on the roads with some of those crazy fools!!
We have had a lot of power outages,
Store shelves are nearly empty due to supply trucks not able to
Get to us. Looks like the pandemonium we see before a hurricane! Lol
People freakin out down here for only two days of ice!! Lmao!!
I'm Planning on going sledding later today! At a Little hill close to my house. Something I haven't done since I was 4:) I don't like it but I'll enjoy it while it's here!:) |

All the milk and bread in grocery stores are sold out, people filling up all their extra gas tanks at the gas stations, it's like they're preparing for a hurricane!
On a serious note though, while this may all seem so silly to those who see tons of snow and ice everyday, there have been several wrecks reported that I know of, one resulting in two deaths. The deep south just doesn't know how to handle winter conditions. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | We're dry here (I WANT SNOW so we can go sled on the levee!), but it was 6 icy degrees this morning. Sooooo over winter. It has literally been decades since it has been this cold. One of my barn kittens fell through some ice, I think, and almost froze to death yesterday. Luckily, I found him when I fed because his hair was frozen stiff, and he got to spend the night in the garage on a heated bed. Little fart was fine this morning, thankfully. |

My guess is because 8 times out of 10 when they predict snow/ice in the South, it stays at 33-34 degrees and rains. So if you cancel ahead of time, you could very likely be wasting a day for nothing. So they probably didn't believe the forecast. |

Well... One of the problems with the drivers here is they are raised differently. Everyplace else in the country I've been people learn to drive defensively. When they see a possible threat they take their foot off the gas and reach for the brake.
Not so here... When the locals here see a possible threat they MASH the gas and reach for the horn!! They will start closing everything here down again at 5PM today..

I do agree with you to an extent, everyone should certainly slow down, and for God's sakes get off of each others bumpers! Ughhhh!
But, I had to drive to the store today, I drove extremely slow, it took me 2-3 times the amount of time it normally takes me. I don't know if we just don't put the same tires on our cars as you guys or what, but even attempting to gently accelerate, I would spin. At one red light, I was the only car at my side of the light and just could not gain traction, and nearly did not make it across by the time it turned red again. We're just not equipped. I won't be going back out until the ice is off the roads for sure. |

Location: FL | I'm in NW Florida, and we have been shut down since yesterday. It began with sleet and by 9pm it was snow mixed in, but it is definitely the ice that is the problem. Every major bridge in the area is iced over. As others have said, we simply don't have what it takes to make the roads safe down here. This morning the county was scrambling to get red clay dumped on major roadways.
My hubby and I made a short trip for groceries this afternoon and witnessed two wrecks. Neither vehicle was speeding. Its the lack of road prep, difference in tires (or lack of chains), and the locals being at a complete loss at how to drive in these conditions. The horses didn't know what do to either. Both mares had icicles hanging off of their blankets tails and ears. They were not amused at all!
I love the cold since we don't get a lot of it. And I have spent winters in Colorado, Ohio and Montana, but will readily admit that I have no idea what I'm doing. However, I bet a lot of northerners would think we are absolutely insane as we stand in our garage and grill burgers in the middle of Cat 2 hurricanes. To each their own! :)

| I stopped by a friends house about 3pm today and they were watching the wacky women that read cards as news and they were giving Atlanta Mayor hell because he said no one has control of Mother Nature and the National Weather bunch forecasted it to be 50 miles south of Atlanta .... 2 NYC women of course that had never owned a car before
They had found them a black retired general or something from the military that was living in Atlanta now .....
HE said ..... IF ATLANTA HAD A MAYOR LIKE WE DO IN NEW YORK CITY THAT MAKES ALL THE DECISIONS FOR THE PEOPLE .... WE WOULD NOT HAVE THIS HAPPENING IN ATLANTA .....
I got up and left before I puked on their floor ... lol ...
***********************************************************
Keep in mind all of these FAKE national emergencies ordering people around .... is a prelude to martial law where everyone will jump on a bus and go to the detention camps to be saved ..................... same way with the TSA at the airports .... no American in the past would put up with that crap of being groped and treated like crap by idiots making $10 and hour ... lol...

You don't know how to drive it in and think its ok to drive like you do any other day.
I think its the humidity that doesn't let the moisture evaporate, temps drop below freezing and everything freezes up again and slicker that it was right after it fell from the sky.
My hubby drove in from Bossier City yesterday afternoon and he fishtailed several times. He couldn't believe how many people were blowing past him in the left lane that was solid ice. He had to stop three times for wrecks they were clearing up. I know it was only a little sleet, but the roads were really bad.
Not sure how it is in other states but the ditches around here are really deep and the back roads are very narrow. There is no wiggle room if you start sliding around. Glad they shut everything down. |

BamaCanChaser - 2014-01-29 8:21 AM Pretty much the entire state of Alabama is shut down. We were out in shorts and t-shirts just Monday!! Now all schools are closed, lots of roads, nearly all the businesses. Some parts of the state have gotten snow flurries, but we haven't seen any yet, just ice.

This is true. Here in the north, we know that we are going to get three to four months of winter unfortunately. We have about a foot of snow on the ground right now and that is less than most winters, but we prepare for it. We have snow tires on our vehicles, most of us out in rural have 4 wheel drive and we keep weight in the back of our trucks to help with traction. We have snowplows out on the roads when it snows and we learn how to handle the snow and ice on the roads. Also, snow at just barely freezing temp is much more slippery and hard to drive in, even with good snow tires than when it is cold and blowing. I don't blame them for shutting things down there. I would not want to be out on the roads unequipped for those conditions with a bunch of other unequipped drivers. At least for you down there it shouldn't last long. |

Yeah. Snow tires are a 'must have thing' in the winter up north. I always had studs put in mine and as a mater of fact I have studs in my spare even now. Down here they pump brine water(mixture of fresh and salt water) out of the bayou and spread that on the bridges. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Hearing about all the people just abandoning their cars in sheer panic on the highways and interstates brought back memories of when I lived in Washington, DC. We were hit with a "storm" that dumped 6" of snow on DC. Everything closed....schools, businesses, and the government. The beltway was jammed, and at first the traffic was slow, but it eventually came to a halt and turned into a parking lot as people simply left their vehicles and walked away. Basically, people panicked and said "screw this". You don't see this up north.....only south of the Mason-Dixon line. I worked in Georgetown, and could see it coming, so I just took the back roads home. I remember looking out at the parking spaces at my condo and it was empty.....almost nobody made it home with their cars. I drove a rear wheel drive sports car at the time. People simply can't handle snow and ice down there. |

Lovely, just lovely -- I'm supposed to start my new job which entails a little travel/lots of driving. I really NEED the hours...... So, guilty as I feel for the youngsters - I guess I'm gonna start praying now that this is WRONG. |

My eyes are bad Murphy is that snowfall amounts? We're awful dry here in eastern SD - especially the NE. A little warmer weather might promote some snowfall. Hint Hint Mother Nature. |

Thank you! Was starting to think I was crazy. Never bought snow tires in my life- I'm Idaho or North Dakota, just the all terrains. |

Location: EDGE OF INSANITY | i think what a lot of people don't get is that "Atlanta the city" is actually not very big and only has a population of about 500,000. What the rest of GA refers to as "Atlanta" is actually made of up around 39-40 counties and roughly 130 cities/towns (metropolitan area) and covers almost 8500 square miles and has a population of over 6 million. A majority of the people that work in atlanta do not live there and commute from the suburbs. Sooo, there is a lot of traffic during rush hour anyway, plus the only public transportation system only serves a couple of these counties. Add all that to pretty much every school, private business and state employee (since atl is the capitol there are a ton of those) were all let go at the same time, millions of cars hit the roads at the exact same time, and by then ice had already begun to form (and no pretreatment of roads had been done). I hate atlanta, hate going there, and if i say i'm "going to atlanta", chances are i'm going no where near downtown lol. Its crazy to see, pretty much every town/city runs together-you can't tell where one ends and another starts. I'm not saying that people in atlanta are wonderful drivers-they're not, they drive like a-holes, but us southerns are not really that dumb, i promise lol |

I've tried all weather radials before... But I lived off the beaten path and our road was always among the last to be plowed. I can attest the radials have got nothing on a pair of mud&snows with studs in ice or snow. I once drove 460 miles across Kansas in an ice storm. My radio antenna was almost 4 inches in diameter when I got to Colorado. All ice. From there it was snow covered roads to the Idaho state line. Back in high school, we took drivers Education in the winter and we went out no mater what the conditions were because we had to learn to drive on that stuff. Rule #1.. Stay OFF the brakes!! |
