Location: North Ga. Mountains | What is the trick to keeping a cowboy hat on while running? I usually pull my hat as far down as it'll go, but man it hurts my head after about 20 minutes. Does having a deeper crown help so that it pulls down further? Any suggestions?? Thanks! |

Location: Kansas | Bobby pins are what I use. The best kind IMO are the ones made for hair rollers - they are about 3 inches long and straight. I hook a little bit of hair and the sweatband of the hat with a bobby pin - on on the left side of the back of my head, one on the right back side and same thing on the front right in front of my ears. sometimes I'll use smaller pins in front of my ears because there's not as much hair there. Works like a charm. I pin my hat on when I get on to warm up and therefore it stays on plus I don't have to have a hat so tight I get a headache. |

Location: Phoenix | I put my head into the crown. So the grooves on the top aren't there. I also pad with panty liners if the hat isn't snug enough. My hat will be just above my eyebrows and I tuck my ears in.
I've heard pulling the back of the sweat band out and then putting your hat on works but I couldn't figure it out. |

I've never lost a hat since I was taught this trick |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | A well fitting quality felt hat. I don't use bobby pins, hair spray, panty liners, stampede strings......nothing. Right before I run I jam it on, never had any of my hats come off, I have 3 right now. My daughter is the same way - she's got nice hats that fit well and she never loses them. |

Location: mn | I took a scissors and cut the sweatband on each side in the middle of the hat, so I'm only pulling the back part of the sweatband down. Worked awesome. I've never lost my hat since, even when I'm sweating my face off. |

This! It's what my mom did to me when I was entered in a rodeo queen pageant (because losing your hat is a huge NO!). Hated it, but I never once lost a hat. |

I'm with you - I pull it down so far and pop the crown so that you can barely see my eyes, ears tucked in! I've never lost my hat... |

This ^ Hairspray has worked for me. I could never keep a hat on before I tried that. I'd love to get a well-fitting felt hat in the future though - that might help solve the problem too. |

| Find the had with a crown that fits your head the right way. I had the worst time through high school because every hat that I bought had a crown that was too shallow and I never thought about it. Later I put on my boyfriends hat from American Hat Company and I could stay in it all day in the wind. He was the one who explained to me the differences in the crowns.
Just to add in I have really curly hair so the new hat typically is snug but if I just happen to have a good hair day(aka controllable and not a big poofball) I do still flip down the back of my hat and suction it onto my head just for safety. |

^^^ This is what the hat maker said to do and it works like a charm if you dont want to put a stampede string on. Just cut the swaet band liner on each side. When you put your hat on just flip the back half of the liner band down. Your hat will indeed stay on . If your hat is a little big, then get some of the filler strips and place it in the front and sides of your hat. Your hat has got to fit snug. |

I have a string too. I have a hair on hide Charlie 1 horse. I tuck the strings in my shirt because I have on occasion grabbed them when grabbing the saddle horn and about choked to death. |

It doesn't even bother me anymore. I've done it this way for several years and I also learned it from the rodeo queen world. If a pin is bugging me, I pull it out and move it. Many times I'll get in the truck to leave a rodeo or barrel race and try to take my hat off, only to realize it's been pinned on for the last 5 hours. LOL. |

This!!!
I have had issues with keeping my hats on for years, come to find out they never really fitted well enough. So we decided last year to look for e new one in Vegas. Turns out most hats have a crown that is too shallow for my head. So finally we found someone that re-shaped one by heightening the crown at least an inch! And last week I tried it and it stayed on without strings, pins or spray or any other "quick fix". So all my other hats are retired to training or trail riding. My new one is for racing only. |

Location: CTX | The one I use for racing now is a black felt 6x Stetson. And like I said, the crown had to be raised quit a bit. But it worked great for me. And a friend of mine who despised running with strings ended up getting the same one.
Now my other hats are both straw. 1 is a Charlie 1 horse. The other I really couln't say which brand it is.
And I'm not sure if they can raise a straw one like that. A good hat store should be able to tell you that.
But I was always skeptical when I got told I could find a good fitting hat.... Thought I had a weird shaped head or something.. Lol but I am convinced now.

Location: Texas | Double sided tape that women use to keep their blouses from gaping works great! You can get them at Walmart. But nothing is better than a well fitting, good, quality hat, I have two and they both stay on with no help. :) |
