Location: Bandera, TX | One of my mares is acting similar today. Didn't finish her grain, didn't touch her morning hay. I gave her some warm electrolyte water which she eagerly drank then she ate her hay. After that she laid down for longer than normal as well. She has good gut sounds and has been pooping as well.
I think this is extreme cold weather and frozen water is getting to them. We are not used to this is South Texas. Please let me know what your vet thinks. Good luck. |

There SHOULD be gut sound, if you won't get hurt stick your ear right on his "belly button" and listen (if you don't have a stethoscope). |

I checked him out and dont see any injuries and pressed all over and he didnt seem to mind like there wasnt any pain anywhere. Ive seen quite a few in my day colic but never anything like this |

Location: monroe louisiana | Just want to thank everyone for their concerns and prayers. It is not looking good. He is not colicing the vet says it is something neurological. He took blood to test, gave him steroids and pain meds. He wants to give it 12 hours and see if he gets any better. If no change he will be put down. He is wrapped in blankets and hay....I feel so bad I just may stay out with him tonight. Please everyone keep him in your prayers! |

So perhaps not injury related then. Did he come up to eat walking normal and then just turned down his food? Long shot perhaps, but I see that as good news versus a traumatic injury. Did the vet attempt to get him up? That's kind of a catch 22. You hate to do anything to cause more damage. Still praying. |

He did try to pull on him to get him up but his legs have no strengh...he just kicks around trying but cant do it. He may have ate half of his feed. He seemed fine didnt wabble when he walked or anything. |

Yes he moves them like he is trying to run and he will hold his back leg in the air and start kicking. The only time he tries to get up is when I get him pulled up on his belly but its like he cant control what his legs are doing. Hes awake and will look around but he will start twitching his head and throwing it around. Breathing and heartrate is normal. Yes when he went down he hasnt gotten back up. Vet didnt say anything about botulism. What is that? |

Location: Florida.. | I misunderstood.. he is laying flat out on side? then he might have other issues then injury, I thought he was up on his belly and kicking to get up.. prayers for him to feel better.. some horses that have a twist or impacted will lay flat out and kick hind legs or hold one up in pain.alos the head tossing.. hes hurting.. did he give him banamine . id be very concerned.

| Hope it is something simple and can be fixed !!
If you can keep him lying on his breast bone in a sitting up position and not laying flat .... it will sure help him to keep fluids off his lungs and expect him to have pneumonia or respiratory problems from being on the ground so long ...
Keep in mind ... Horses get up with their front feet first and then a quick lunge upwards to swing their rear feet up under them when getting up ...
Cows get up just the opposite ... rear end up first and then the front end ...
I mention this so if he gets to feeling better you can help him get positioned to get on his feet easier ...
PRAYERS TO YOU!! |
