Location: Minnesota | I was showing a lady a few pictures of my gelding and she called him a blood bay. I haven't heard that term and I'm wondering what is the definition? She said because of the red in his tail. I just call him a bay, is this wrong? He's not registered and I don't know anything about his parents except one was a Morgan and one was a Friesian. Ill attached a few pictures.

| I've always been told "blood bays" are really red colored with black tips. And I can honestly say I have only had one that fit this description. He was almost chestnut copper colored with bay markings. I have never hear one with red in it's tail referred to as a "blood bay"? Your horse just looks bay to me!

I didn't know this lady, she just said blood bay and it got me all confused. I call him a bay too but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. |

Location: MD | When I call a horse blood bay I think of a really rich colored bay. Not like a light colored bay like the girl yesterday who's bay looked like a dun without dun characteristics. I'll try to upload a picture

Location: Weatherford, TX | I consider a blood bay different than a brown bay. A blood bay has much more red in the body coat; whereas a brown bay has more brown in the body coat. Both have black points.
I always ask if someone says 'bay', which kind. I am partial to blood bays. I would consider your guy more of a blood bay. I hope all that makes sense. |

Location: Missouri | Your boy is beautiful! I would consider him blood bay in his summer coat. IMO, it's just a loose term for a red colored bay (versus brownish). I have one that I think would be considered blood bay, he looks almost orange in the winter, compared to darker brown like my other bay. Here's a couple of pics of mine. In the first, they're already are getting wooly, but you can see the color difference. The 2nd is my gelding in the summer and he is much redder than my other bay. ...well stink! I can't copy and paste from FB anymore?! I'll try again...

Location: N Texas | I wouldn't consider your horse a blood bay. The red hairs in the tail have nothing to do with it. As others have mentioned, it's a shade of bay that is reddish colored vs brownish colored. Just a shade of bay, not its own separate color. Kind of like trying to distinguish between chestnut and sorrel. Some people say there's a difference, others say they're the same.
Here's what I consider blood bay:

That was when I still boarded him almost 2 years ago. It was the first day the big pasture opened and all the horses went crazy. |

Yes I have but he's mainly my trail horse. He's a really spooky horse so I like to take him out of the arena as much as I can to help with that. He'd much rather stay in the arena but he needs to get over that. |
