Part of me grew up on a ranch nearby. I used to go over the border on a frequent basis. My folks sold the land in the late 80's and my husband and I sold our lake house about 8 years ago. It was not safe any longer to go over and visit like we enjoyed doing in the past. Had a co-worker go down and hunt last week and he said it was very different than the last time he was there 6 years ago.
Other than the lake to fish, not a thing would attract me to go back. I even passed on the ammy rodeos down there the past couple of years.

The SO's family has a lake house down there we go to some, it's pretty but the water is COLD even in the summer so that's not much of an option. The most entertainment you will find other than that is people watching at the walmart. Don't go.

What brings you to Del Rio anyway?  Unless you like to fish there is nothing there.  Nothing.

Location: del Rio, Texas USA!!!
The 7th and 8th of March, there is a festival just 25-miles east of Del Rio in Brackettville, the annual 'Fort clark spring Days' at Fort Clark, great food, family-fun, lots of vendor booths with crafts, jewelry, toys, food, etc. Bands playing, tours, rubber-ducky race in the Springs, Indian Pow-Wow, and Civil War Regiment Re-Inactments with cannons, guns, tents, soliders, and more.

Del Rio also, has a newly-formed NBHA TX11 Barrelracing district, new 2014 schedule has not been decided, yet, however, you may keep up to date at their new website www.nbhatx11.webs.com for more information or check out their Facebook page at NBHA TX11 .

del Rio is a laid-back community with a huge Mexican-influence, lots of great Mexican restaurants with authentic Mexican food, not citified. Manuel's Steakhouse, Doc Holidays, El Patios Mexican, Ponchos Mexican Restaurant, and Julios (Julios Chips and Salsa), and more.

Nite-life is filled with regional bands and karaoke at doc Holidays, Lorina's Cantina, The White Horse Lounge, or Hookers at Rough Canyon. Del Rio boots an award-winning community theatre with the Del Rio Upstagers performing broadway, and off-broadway productions several times a year. The Del Rio Arts Council offers weekday and weekend art, dance, and culinary classes at The Firehouse Gallery, and at the beginning of each month, The First Friday Art Walk' is a community favorite for art-lovers and social butterflies. A walking tour thru the Art District in Del Rio downtown offers regional artists opportunities to showcase their artwork to the community.

some people may think Del Rio offers nothing, if you enjoy peace and quite, a slow-pace, friendly people, and fun Del Rio-style, then you will enjoy your stay in our little town.

PM me, if you need more information.

Boutique women's shops like "Buffal Girls', and 'Russell's Gifts'. there are other cool shops in Del Rio along Main Street dwntown, and the weekend 'Pulga', Mexican fleamarket is just a stone's throw from the International Border.

I currently live here now.  I wish I was told about some of these things when we first came down.

The lake is AMAZING, it is one of the top 4 bass fishing lakes in the country however we only seem to catch them if we happen to snag it by accident.

If you are coming to visit, it's great but to live you have to prepare for things like medical doctors, poor customer service, limited vets & no after hours vet call either & never expect anyone to be on time or in a hurry.
I will not go over to Acuna or Mexico either.  I know & work with people who do for doctors, vets, etc but if you don't have reason to go just don't bother.

Items to see/visit while here:
The border fence is interesting to see, love that it ties into a crappy barbed wire fence at the end of the road!
The val verde winery is the oldest winery in Texas - love the wines & the tour of the place takes maybe 30 minutes with the tasting.
Of course the lake, which is pretty clear & is down quite a bit but still over 100 feet in some parts.
Seminole park - about 45 mins from Del Rio.  Has Indian cave paintings, really neat but it's a 1.5 hour hike & best to do it while it's cool out!

Those are the main hot spots that I take people to that come visit.

Can't wait for NBHA to get going!!!!! Just moved to Del Rio for work, and am pretty interested in finding any one positive thing about it. Don't think I'll be sampling the night life, I don't think my crowd would live through the cultural difference. I won't be dropping my guard anytime soon, too much cartel and illegal traffic activity for comfort. Going to try really hard not to wake up chained in a basement in Mexico. I know I sound negative, but this place freaks me out....

You have the right to be freaked out, I have lived on the border all my life, and these last 10 years have been the worst its ever been. So darn glad that we moved a ways away from it...

Do you live here currently??

I agree with everything you said but I really liked Seminola Canyon and the Winery are really cool to see.

I'm PRETTY darn excited about the NBHA, when is that happening?!?!?  I sold everything when we moved here & live in town because I didn't want illegals running through my property, cutting fences, or scarying my horses or us.  I HATE MY LIFE here without horses and have been here a few years now.  I've met a few people who have horses but other than a professional reiner no one is really into competing in anything.

Del Rio does have its charm, don't get me wrong.  And compared to other border towns or other larger cities the crime rate is relatively low.  If an illegal is caught in del rio area, they go straight to jail so it's more quiet.  Not saying anything can't happen here but I feel safer here than I thought I would.

Hunting feral hogs out of a helicopter is where it's at..Wish they would hunt them distinct. The damage they cause is horrendous.

Thousands of feral hogs just north of Del Rio, only seen two out our the ranch here, but I know there's more. I here there are lots out by Lake Amistad, there's more fresh water, and more for them to eat than on the desert ranch I'm on.

I guess I'm not freaked out by Del Rio because I live out on a ranch away from town, even though we do have illegals coming through the property. Neighbors ranch hands found two dead bodies a couple of weeks ago, about a half mile from our ranch headquarters. Not sure if they died from exposure (extreme heat) or killed by their 'Coyote' (drug runners). Doubt we will ever know what happened to them. I hear Border Patrol keeps a DNA data base on returned illegals, hopefully their families will at least know why they don't write or call home.

There are lots of team ropings in and around Del Rio, the barrelracing is just getting back in action after several years of no leadership or organization by any locals. I'm not out on the rodeo trail anymore, in between horses (a cripple 18-yr old, and a 5-yr that thinks he's a bucking horse).

I do like the Vineyard, they have great pressed Olive Oil grown there, too.

It's certainly not Dallas/Fort Worth, took me six-months to get over moving down here, but we do have Fedex, UPS, the postal service, and Ebay. If I can't get things that way, guess I don't need them anyway.

Perhaps I'd didn't give enough details, bady decomposed bodies, basically skulls, and feet with a little bit of meat of them. Apparently, the varmints got to them, so they would have had to have been in the neighbor's pasture for some time. The remains were just found two weeks ago. LOL!!!

I'm out on a ranch too, and about 15 miles from the next neighbor. (I think). We're exactly 7 miles from the border itself. I know that unless they're desperate, illegals will try to avoid houses and bases that they know are there. I also sort of feel that since we're still close to the border, they're still moving pretty good, even in extreme heat. It's the desperate ones that are scary, along with the ones you accidentally stumble upon carrying drugs. They don't want to be seen, and I don't want to see them. Still, chance is chance, and it works in funny ways. I've been in South Texas for over three years, and have been running the roads and ranches south and west of Catarina, Cotulla, and Carrizo Springs. Dilley, Gardendale, Tilden, Pearsall, Uvalde, Big Wells, and all the little crappy towns in between have also been front and center in my life. The gas and oil companies and contractors have safety meetings about what to do and how to act if you are attacked by illegals, and incidents like these are not unrecorded. I have seen many illegals while road running, but luckily, it was just the guys in flip flops and shorts moving through at a trot. Still, I know that they are humans, and smart, and strong. I don't discredit desperation, and I know how ruthless I would get under similar circumstances. I'm tough, and aggressive, and I always credit the other guy to be more so, and a whole lot stronger and faster than I.

I do feel safer out on this ranch than I would closer to town, I won't lie there. But at the same time, it is worrisome because I'm completely aware that our safety is completely up to us. There is no one to hear us cry for help, and help is more than 20 minutes away. 20 minutes is a long time. I do choose to have my head up, and to be freaked out, because if something were to happen, I'm going to need that edge. I'm not scared, I continue my daily life and care for my animals as normal. But I am armed. I have my dogs with me. I keep my keys in my pocket. I have my cell phone with me. I look around and in the back of the vehicle before I get in, I peek into buildings and don't forget to check the overhead. I let the dogs into the house first, because they'll freak if there's a stranger. I have weapons stashed around in odd places. I'm fixing to set up cameras everywhere, so I'll know if there's "brown foots" padding around. Little precautions don't take long, and they might save myself or my husband some time. I haven't forgotten that the border area is very very dangerous, and there are tough, desperate, physically fit men and women coming within mere moments of everything I treasure. I do understand that if I get surprised and jumped, I'm done. A lot of us "safety up" when we feel insecure during a barrel run. Well, I'm safetied up!

On a positive note, the Chiles in town cooks a great ribeye, the HEB is practically Mecca, and y'all have a Tractor Supply. Two McDonalds never hurt any community, and the gas station attendant was extremely sweet to me. So far, so good. :)

I completely agree on the safety.  Conceal carry license is a must but needs to have follow up on regular trips to the range to practice drills.  Anyone in the area can contact me regarding these things & I can provide information on training, ranges, & even ammo.

I live in town (about 2 mile from the border), & can see the border from my bedroom.  We walk our dogs in an area in town close by that is undeveloped land on a regular basis.  we've seen the Border Patrol picking up illegals there.  I'm not nieve & can't let my guard down either.  I work with newly released inmates, mexican nationals & my office sits at the border fence!  Gotta have situational awareness on a daily basis but I'm not afraid to go anywhere here.  Just not going to Mexico and don't suggest anyone else does unless  you have someone go with you that knows their way around & go with a purpose.

Wow you border women are tough!! You have my greatest admiration! My friends and inused to love to go across shopping. Sit in cantinas listen to music and have a few! It was sooo much fun! Haven't been in years and we sure miss it. We even went way down on the copper canyon train and went to some remote villages and so loved the people there!no more tho ;( As for del rio I wonder if they still have boat tours on amistad/ pecos river to see the petroglyphs?? That would be something great to do if you like history/geology. You can get books on the local Rock art to read before you go which makes it more meaningful. Love that stuff myself ;)

The George Paul - Daddy of 'Em all- is still a huge deal.  We still haven't gone to it yet.
There's no tours on Amistad or Pecos for the cave paintings anymore but the lake & river have dropped drastically because of the drought.  People can or could take their own boats to see it but it's kinda iffy.  Kinda too close to mexico for comfort & way too desolate!
We've been able to see the panther from bike riding in Seminole Canyon.

There's a war going on along our borders and our government turns a blind eye to it. We use to love to go over to Nuevo Laredo. I feel sorry for all of the vendors that had shops there. We went over so much that some of them remembere our names.
