With that being said, I'm thinking about wearing a helmet. Which ones do you like and why?
Thanks in advance. |

Location: lexington KY | I just bought one and will be wearing it this year. I got a Charles Owen Pro II and I really like it. I am on the hunt for cool covers to match my polos. I never thought I would be a helmet person, however I have had 2 head injuries in less than 10 years and they were all freak deals. Just to be cautious I think it is time to wear one and I can put on my cowboy hat as soon as I get off my horse. |

| Bought one about 3-4 mo ago.....really like it. Tipperary Sport. Had a fall outside on a grassy field (horse hit a slick spot while loping a large circle and pancaked), slammed me to the ground and hit my head....HAD NOT put the helmet on yet! Thankfully no injury but how stupid is that to have it in the truck until I run....why not always?? |

Location: Mississippi | My husband and I both wear one. We are two of a very few in our district or area that wear them. We made the decision several years ago to wear them to encourage a young girl we were helping to feel comfortable wearing one. I even ride in mine at home now. I did not wear it at a clinic I attended recently, however, and I made the comment that I could not remember the last time I rode without it. Feels natural now. I have felt odd at times, but I'd like to keep the brains the good Lord gave me and be able to ride in years to come, so I wear it. We both have Troxels, but wear different models. |

| Sorry to hear about your friend. :(
I wear one whenever I ride, it is an Ovation. It's not the most glamorous thing on the market (I prefer the look of the Tipperary Sportage), but it is adjustable so it fits my fat head. |

| I do, and I also ride in a Tipperary sport model.
I grew up riding hunters and helmets were required attire. Doesn't feel natural without one and I ride far more confident with it. There's a handful of us, I can think of 3 adults including myself in the area who do. |

Well the adjuster on it broke so i ordered the Tipperary Sport and love it, it's lighter with alot of air vents on the top, it's almost like not wearing one at all...... |

If you're thinking about it, it's time to wear one. Wear it every ride, every horse, every time. At first it's a little bit awkward because you think people are looking at you differently but pretty soon you realize that they aren't. I wear a tipperary sport and love it, it is very light weight and comfortable. |

Location: So. Cali. | I currently wear a Troxel with a dial adjustment in the back. It's kind of on the big side. I tried one on recently that was a Troxel with the 'Cinch Fit' adjustment, was super comfy and not oversized, however when I went and did some research on it, it appears to be more of a 'schooling' helmet so the way I understood it it was not for high impact. In the market for a new helmet so interested to see what other suggest!
ETA: It was the Liberty I had tried on at Broken Horn. But I see they have the same style in the Intrepid that says Performance.. HMM!

All of them are very good riders and it could have happen to anyone! I just bought an expensive Charlie 1 hat and I thought I would wear a helmet one time for my friend that got hurt. I thought I would be subconscious about it, but I"m not. I now see more and more riders wearing them! I don't worry about my hat coming off and it keeps me cooler. oh I I wear a Toxel.

| I just went (this past Sunday) to the local Dover Saddlery store and got fitted for one. I ended up with one by Ovation. I knew I was hard to fit and gave the poor girl a run for her money. I would love a Charles Owen GR8 but can't afford to spend that much money right now so the Ovation was the next best fitting helmet for me.

| I bought a Tipperary Sportage in October. Its a great helmet, low profile and light weight. I had a few people ask my why I started wearing one all of sudden. I told them I wanted to be a great role model for my daugher. She is only 2 but is starting to show interest in horses and riding with me. Plus I dont bounce off the ground like I use to..... now its just a hard thud. |

| I've been wearing one for over 17 years. I've had Troxels- Legacy Gold, IRH ATH (for hunter/jumper shows), and just recently bought an Ovation that is a knockoff of the Tipperary.
BTW- Troxel has some really cool new designs on their helmets. I've been eyeing one for Playdays and Barrel Races.

| I started to wear one this year. No one around here really does...when you go to bigger shows you see it, but not really at any of the jackpots.
Husband and I both decided to show in them.
Mine is a Troxel.
It kills me how in hunter jumpers and cross country it is the norm to wear a helmet, I don't understand why it would not be in barrel racing.
To each their own I guess...and frankly I don't care what people think of me for wearing one. |

| I just started wearing one. It's not easy for me to do it, as I tend to be concerned about what people are thinking, but I keep hearing the stories and people's opinions mean nothing compared to possibly getting hurt, never riding again, or even worse.... Thumbs up to everyone who wears one, sets a good example for everyone!
ETA: I got the Troxel Intrepid, and so far I love it! Its comfortable and doesn't slip or move around and definitely does not get into my line of vision!

| I always wear a helmet. I started english so it has always been wear a helmet every time since I started. Kinda mixed in the circuits around here in barrel/poles some wear a helmet some don't but I would say its nearly 50:50. Some even wear the safety vests they wear in eventing/jumping. Your brain IS who you are...its not just life and death an accident could change who you are. |

There will be at least 3 girls running in the San Angelo slack wearing a helmet out of the 282.
I love yes, love wearing mine. Much easier than messing with my hat.
I start all my colts and like to ride by myself so they afford me a little "stupid" moment leeway.
I wear a helmet for all the other "dangerous" activities I love to do so it wasn't a big jump for me. I've been hurt more times riding than Fire Fighting, ski racing or even sky diving. |

| My kids and I always wear a helmet. We have a combination of Troxels and Ovations.
I've worn a helmet since I was a kid .. I know for a fact that while I was preggers with my middle kid, my helmet saved me and my son's life. We were just standing in a creek visiting, when my horse slipped on a rock, went down and came up with her foot on my head, underwater. I am positive that it would not have had a good outcome without my helmet.
I wish more adults would wear helmets and I REALLY wish more adults would make their kids' wear helmets. I do not understand taking that kind of risk with a kid's future. We make our kids wear helmets to play football, ride a bike, 4 Wheel ... just don't understand how some can ignore the data on the long term consequences of multiple concussions.
Just seems like a minor inconvenience ... but could be life saving... |

Yep. No one has ever been rude to me about wearing a helmet, but it wouldn't bother me if they were.
What sucks is when my kid just wants to ride around with the other kids and they make fun of him because he is the only one in a helmet. Breaks my heart because he is such a kind kid and just wants to make friends, but I am not changing my mind on the helmet. |

| Mine just came ! I was the gal who posted not too long ago about my self confidence flying out the window after seeing my friend's horrific riding accident. I used to wear one all the time, but sort of got away from it over the past 4 years. The one I bought is by Ovation, its the Z-Elite, super duper light weight ! Hubby couldn't believe it was a helmet in the box it was so light. And it fits well, I have a hard to fit head. Have not ridden yet, recovering from walking pneumonia but happy to have it :) |

 Nothing Comes Easy

Location: Texas | I started riding in a helmet before the age of 5. Through my teen years, I was one of the only ones cruising around in a helmet. Now in my 20s, I see more people riding in helmets- young and old. I think it's a smart move :)
I ride in an Aegus Ussepa. I think it's now schooling rated. I've thought about upgrading, though I'm pretty fond of it.
I've had several freak accidents, one that includes me bailing off of a horse running full speed, being ran over and getting kicked in the head by the horse. Cracked my helmet, I walked away unhurt. Couldn't imagine such without my helmet. I was 16 years old, riding a bomb proof 20+ year old gelding. I've also had plenty of sliding stunts around the barrels where my horses have hit hard pan under soft dirt and we've gone sliding on our sides.
You cant prevent the what's to come, but you can be safe and ready.
Remember! Anytime your helmet has taken a crash with you, hit the ground, or cracked- it needs to be replaced!

I'm 62 and I started riding again a few yrs ago after many years. I don't have confidence or balance but its getting better! I'm teaching my 6 yr old grand daughter to ride on a 23 yr old that only walks and she does not get on without a helmet !! My husband ordered me the new troxel low profile a month before Christmas and we have still not got it!! ;( they also charged him for expedited shipping lol he was mad! They said its held up by customs? I wonder where it is. I went to an equine trail sports ride yesterday (fun) and I was definitely not in the minority there!! I'm seeing a few more helmet wearers at barrels races and that is good. I have a couple friends no longer with us that were fabulous riders and got killed by hitting their heads. They would still be here if they had been wearing helmets!!!! I love a cowgirl hat but I have 5 grand kids and lot of livin left to do!!! |

That is horrible that the other kids make fun of yours for being safe! I'd go talk to the parents if I knew them..
I personally don't wear one, but am not against others making the choice to do so maybe someday I'll change a wear one until then pray for my risky self. |

| Personally I don't wear a helmet, but I 100% should!! Honestly I know its silly not to wear one, when I rode hunter/jumpers I was always in a helmet, but then again I always hated it.
I suppose it's the memories of how uncomfortable it was that keep me from going back to it, but all this Tipperary Sport talk is giving me hope :) Good for you for the helmet thing though! Don't let anyone make you feel bad, despite the fact that I dumbly choose not to wear one I have a lot of respect for those who do because they do it for themselves and no one else!! |

Now, I won't lie, I am a bit of a hypocrite. I wear it when I make a run but not when I am doing everyday stuff. And I know that is horrible. I have no excuse.
I won't give my reasons but I have them for why I wear one when I do and when I don't. Kensington used to make a helmet that was AMAZING. At least I think it was a kensington. I like mine but I am going to upgrade and go all out for a really nice one here in a minute.
I put my helmet on right before I make a run and I take it right off. And I have never cared what anyone thinks about me wearing it.
I actually had a guy tell me just a bit ago that I probably run better if I didn't wear a helmet-that it probably throws my balance off (I am a good rider BTW). I laughed and said 1 time in my entire life I didn't grab my helmet and I tried to make a run. I knocked 3 barrels down and was so off balance it wasn't even funny. I didn't kick or anything I was so conscious about it. It is like putting a saddle on my horse now. And yes, I snapped on that guy. Stupid roper. |

Hahahaha! yep, must have been a roper!! I hoping for Murphy's law....if I wear a helmet, I will be safe from harm! It works with my shin guards! I don't hit barrels when I wear them! But the minute I don't think I need them.....BAM!! lol |

Spot on. I have permanent contusions in my lower legs. Doctors said I run the risk of very seirous and permanent damage to them if I don't wear protection on them. I don't run barrel hitters anymore so I don't wear them. Talk about gambling!! Mostly I don't wear them because I am lazy. Not lazy about grabbing a helmet but I am about shin gaurds. How retarded is that??? :) |

Have you seen the ones that are made into your socks? I guess they much just slip into a pocket on your sock? Pretty good idea. I just wear soccer shin guards under my pants. |

| My neighbor came over last night to BS and drink some beer. He was looking at one of my barrel racing pictures. He asked if the association made me wear a helmet or if it was a personal decision. I told him that it was a personal decision and I was surprised by his reaction. (He is a roper.) He said told me that it was a smart idea and that he has seen to many trust worthy horses have freak accidents and their owners not walk away from the accident. Its nice to hear the positive re-enforcement from others. |

Location: Ky | I wear one every time I run. I should probably wear it when riding on the farm too, but I don't. Two years ago, my mare slid in the alley way from a run and fell over top of me and broke my helmet in four places. Thank God I only had a minor concussion! The doctor said that if I hadn't been wearing one, I could have died from the impact. Ever since, I can't even think about barrel racing without one. Sure, my pictures aren't as pretty with a big brown turtle shell on my head, but its worth knowing that I'm safer. I love my helmet! I use a troxel sierra. |

 Go For It!
Location: Texas | I will admit that I considered wearing one for years but always had some excuse as to why I had yet to get one. Well this past November a family member got a head injury, not horse related, but it was a real wake up call for me. My children were so distraught over what had happened. I ordered a helmet that week and now I ride in it all the time, even at home. I don't even think about it anymore - I love my helmet! I bought the Troxel with the brown leather… very comfy.

I wear those too.....UNDER my jeans so they are a tinge less conspicuous as my shiny silver helmet. But hey, i'm still one of the cool kids. LOL Maybe i'm just trying to live up to the Tin Foil Hat stigma we created so long ago.....

| I wear one also. Was bucked off in August-concussion/stitches-I always wear one now! If I would have had one on, I would not have been as injured as I was.
I highly recommend the Tipperary Sportage! |

I don't know if the picture will work but here is my helmet. I never wore one but forced my children to. (still do for that matter). I saw a terrible accident in August, it was my first time in public wearing my helmet. I was so glad to be wearing mine that day and will continue to compete wearing one. I decided it was pretty silly for me to force my children yet I didn't wear one. My oldest daughter caught me on it and said "why do I have to if you don't" Good question...So I wear one now. Probably a good thing too since I fractured my skull in October and have a dent in my forehead from a farm accident, LOL! Maybe I should wear mine 24/7 :) |

She said if she is going to force us to wear them, then she will wear one too.
I hated it growing up, but now I can't imagine not wearing one and I am very thankful I had a helmet on when my filly tripped and rolled over me a few years back, knocking me unconscious. I can't image how bad I would have been hurt if I didn't have my helmet on.
There's been many times that I've been glad I've had my helmet on .... simply walking around the trailer on foot!!! Those danged goosenecks will get you. ;-)
