Ok guys I have never used a "poll martingale" but was going through some old dvds for fun the other day and Sharon Camarillo talks about it briefly. Anyone use these? what are your feelings? Personally I dont feel the need for one on my horse but love to know more.

I use them on off the track horses or horses that are naturally heavy on the bridle. It helps back them off and get lighter in the face, as correction and release are immediate. I don't usually need it more than five-ten rides. It's a great tool. I use a chunk of clothesline cotton cord and a bowline knot. I also round pen or lunge them each time before I get on them to make sure they remember it. I also only use a smooth snaffle. I have used a large twist a couple times on hard cases,but as a last resort. Then I graduate them to a tiny twisted O ring and a headsetter to help stay light until it's time to transition to a shank. The whole point is to turn a hard face into a responsive one, without using tons of hand pressure and saving the horse a lot of scary cues that he can't understand.

Sc was the first clinic I ever took...so I have used one a lot over the years...and I still do on certain horses......like other martingales they have a purpose and are like any other toolM

I went to one of ryan lovendahl's clinics and he used the poll martingale on OTT mare, she was stiff and pushy, she had a very hard time giving into any kinds of pressure. The lady uses the martingale quite often on the mare and gets very nice results from using it!
