HI, my daughter is going to do a school project comparing different feeds in our area . She will group our horses into 2 or 3 depending on how many we can use and they will receive the same type of exercise ect . We were planning to chart everything before hand and plan to do it up to 90 days to try and give the feed enough time to do what it is suppose to . What kind of things do you think she should chart we were thinking weight, hoof growth, possible even hair growth, top line, heart rates and endurance changes. Give her some ideas if you have them, she is home schooled so we can pretty much make this anything we want.

We will be using Total Equine, a purina feed, Triple Crown, Tribute, and possible Progressive if I can get some . We will use feeds that are designed for the same basic purpose and all horses are in training. We might even include one with the broodmares and foals. I think I can make it into a school project !

I think this sounds a little difficult because each horse will process foods differently.  Some horses do really well on a feed and others lose weight.  I would test 1 feed for all horses.
Take data on weight, hoof growth, etc based on age.  The other option you stated for data are fine too, but I think using a different feed for each horse won't really tell you which one is best.
If you'd like her to see the differences in what different feeds would do, I'd feel 1 for a month and then choose a different feed for a month and so on.

No control group for your experiment, is a hole I see in the plan.

We are still working it out so looking for ideas. Thanks for input we are a ways from starting, we can make a control group for sure. I realize that each horse will use feed differently so we are working on something to do there like changing feeds at some point to see how it changes the horse. I am a bit of a feed nerd I already know what I like but this is something fun to put some school work to use.
