My horse does not like his mouth messed with-this includes deworming paste, ect. I worked with him on it significantly and he has improved, but still will only tolerate it once. Figures us out quick.

He had a molar removed yesterday due to infection. They highly suggested we flush him. Any tricks or tips in flushing a horse that is more difficult?

Thank you!

My sister had a horse that didn't like to be wormed etc...One day I got a bucket of water and just kept flushing his mouth out until he decided it didn't taste bad and it was no big deal. In between wormings she would just squirt plain water in his mouth. Also...don't shove the syringe into his mouth...take it and rub it around his nose and once he is relaxed, slip it in gently.

When holding the syringe, point the end of it down instead of up. When you just try to stick it in the corner of a horse's mouth, you're more likely to jab his lip etc, and it's harder to hit the mark. Every time he pulls back, you gotta start over. If you lay it against the side of his face with the plunger pointing up toward his ear and the squirting end down like you were going to squirt the ground, then if he runs backward, you can just run with him, all the time holding the syringe there just flat against the side of his face. When he stops, just turn the squirting end in, so it will go in his mouth down lower (not where he's sore), keep turning it, it will sort of cross his tongue, and once you get it pointed up toward the back of his mouth, then squirt.

I guess you're doing hot salt water?

Warm water/Clorihex solution!

He is a professional syringe avoider lol!

I put the syringe in my right hand and lay it against his halter and he continuously throws his head up. He is 16 hands and I am 5'3, so I cannot reach him the best. He gets severely anxious and agitated with the entire process.

Thank you for your tips!
