I watched the Road to the American on Wednesday (Mary & Byron Walker were on there) and I'm pretty sure Justin said the semi finals are being broadcast on RFD-TV on Feb. 21 like at 2:00 p.m....

Yep...2:00 p.m. Eastern:

February 21 | 2:00 pm
"The American - Mesquite Semis"

I don't think she will borrow a horse since she owns her own horsepower and other people have ridden her horses and have done real well.

You may be right, but from the results I've seen her in she hasn't just been spanking them.  Not getting embarrassed by any means...I'm not trying to talk trash (I certainly didn't beat her). With that much $$ on the line I think it will be interesting to see what she does.

Charmayne has nerves of steel and while so many others will be choking from the pressure she will rise to the top. Also...she has been going to jackpots and I know at least one of her horses fires much more in a rodeo atmosphere. I wouldn't put a bet that she will make it in the top 5 but I also wouldn't count her out. There are so many rock stars running right now it will come down to who is on that day. JMO

I can't remember whose horse it is she's riding, but she has been at a couple of the pro shows on him lately. He has done okay, about 1/2 second out at Belton. I know that they want her name on the list, but there are some really nice horses out there that I'd rather watch. No offense to her, but the game has definitely changed the past few years and she hasn't been going much. Personally... I don't really think it's fair, but it's not my barrel race. I think you should have to earn your way into the game, no matter who you are. It is the best of the best and they should keep it current, IMO.

And also for Talmadge. I predict he will over ride and shoot himself in the foot.

The girls coming off of the NFR should shine as they are in the groove of riding under a lot of pressure. Again JMO.

So far the exemptions I know of are Charmayne, Justin McBride, Dan Mortenson, and Ote Berry. Glad they picked Ote. There were a few others I would have liked in the steer wrestling, but they may be too old to want to try it. LOL Does anyone know of any other exemptions? I know Fred W and Joe B will have a 2 head match soon if they haven't already to see who gets the calf roping exemption. I love that they are honoring past champs. I would have preferred the bull riding champ to be from the PRCA and not the PBR. Since this is a one day rodeo, I would've liked that exemption from a "rodeo" association. I hope the top 10 NFR bull riders aren't left out of this deal because of the affiliation with the PBR.

Not saying she wasn't an amazing competitor with some really nice horses… but, let's face it… I don't go to see the riders… I go to watch the horse power… I don't care who the jockey is. She just isn't current, in my opinion. I would rather see someone who is out there right now, running and winning. I like Charmayne and mean her no disrespect. If she had earned that spot, like everyone else had to, then I would probably feel different. In that case then they might as well just invite her to all the NFR's for the next however many years… Like I said, it's just my opinion.

grinandbareit - 2014-02-14 7:05 PM I can't remember whose horse it is she's riding, but she has been at a couple of the pro shows on him lately.
I think Charmayne has more than earned her way into this rodeo.
I think one of the awesome things about this whole new rodeo concept is in part how they are inviting these past "greats" so we can watch them again.  I myself am beside myself waiting to watch the retired athletes come out and play.

That is not my dislike, lol. I would love to see some past "greats" competing. But I'd rather watch them compete against each other… Like Martha, Charmayne, Kristi… just not in this particular venue. I'd love to watch some of those older horses come out to play, too! That would be fun. But not in the American… That would be more for an invitational barrel race.

Those folks paid $500. entry fees, competed against the best of the best that are out there running and winning right now, and earned their way to this 2 million dollar rodeo. I can't wait to see that competition, it is going to be awesome. There were some amazing runs in Alvarado! A 16.8 won it and you had to be a 17.1 or better to be in the top 10 on a standard pattern, just to qualify. That's a pretty dang tough barrel race! But welcome to texas, lol! I sure hope they have it on TV, because I'm probably not going to pay all that money for a ticket though, lol!

I am loving that fact they are inviting the past champs. It is only one slot in each event...that's it. I want to see Ote Berry roll in there and spank them. LOL Same with Charmayne. If she comes in dead last, I will still think her exemption was a great idea. That's part of the excitement, bringing the exemptions. At this event and this format, I don't think the horse power is the draw for most spectators, it's the contestants. It's like Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Blake Shelton performing at the Grammys. The only current radio performer in that lineup is Blake Shelton, but the other 3 are who got Jay-Z & Beyonce as well as many others on their feet.

I agree with PART of that, lol. Those old singers have amazing songs and voices. I love to hear them... But with barrel racing it is totally different. Those guys can strum any guitar and still be great. Without our horses, no one would ever know our name. It's the horses that make barrel racers famous. We compete against Charmayne on a pretty regular basis, and she just isn't on anything phenomenal right now. She's always been very nice and her horses always do well, so like I said before, I mean no disrespect. I just think she needed to earn that spot. I guess I'm just not a star-struck kind of person, lol.

I'm not star struck either. I don't think of rodeo people as celebrities, but I enjoy seeing a former champ compete with the present top dogs just like I enjoy a rookie competing with them. I hope she finds a horse that will ensure her to be competitve. It's just one slot and adds to the excitement of the event. I just don't think she would have accepted the exemption if she didn't think she'd be competitve. I think an 11 time champ has earned her spot, but that's just me.This is part of the fascination with the event.

I didn't read all the posts but my first thought about Charmayne and her competitiveness is this:  She doesn't have a thing to prove...she's been there, done that and now her life's priorities are about many more things -like her kids, business, clinics etc. - she may or may not be in top form, no one stays there forever.  Charmayne has already accomplished more in the barrel racing/rodeo world than most of us will if we go to every barrel race there is for the next 40 years!

I think the bigger question the American will answer are people better now or then? If those that were winning 15- 20 years ago could go back in time (physically) to their younger years would they be as competive today as they were then? Obviously rough stock events are much more physical than barrel racing or team roping so youth will have a large advantage. But I think many people wonder if the genetics, supplements, care and everything that goes into competing today make great athletes great or would they have been great no matter what decade they compete in.

O and Jackie Hobbs made it to the semi finals in team roping yesterday! Another cool thing about the American! Gender nor age matter!

I love to watch Charmayne run her young horses, this lady is so quite with her hands and as cool as can be while running. She has been bringing a few of her young ones here to run, Clayton's Halo is one that shes been bringing and wow this one is nice, she won one race on James Jolly Taylor. I wish everyone had the chance to watch this lady ride.   All I can say is I wish her the best

I always thought that he was a little arrogant, etc but after watching him talking about his early family life, I respect what he has overcome. Additionally, 3 years ago when we were at the Cheyenne Rodeo, we watched him make a special effort to stop and talk to every child and shake their hand or sign an autograph.

I thought the same as you Norma.  Then he started to grow on me.  During the NFR when he commentated with the guys during the calf roping he really impressed me so I ordered his book.  Reading that book put him in a whole other category.  I had no clue what that man went through to get where he is today.
