I don't own the business but I do manage our company's website. It's only partially equine related (all livestock + pets) but if you're interested in social media, ecommerce platform info, SEO, advertising, etc. I might be able to help.

For me, the ups and downs have mostly been related to the original site being very out-of-date. We solved that last fall with a complete site rebuild. Very time consuming! I don't really come from a web background so there was a learning curve there, too.

Our traffic is increasing dramatically since switching to the new platform and working on some SEO things. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time. Then I'm constantly tweaking things so that it's easier for our customers to use - i.e. better product/category hierarchy, search function, one-page checkout, etc.

For expanding/networking, we do quite a bit of social media and email marketing. We also have a blog (I'm working on rebuilding that since we lost our other one when we switched to the new site) which helps with SEO since ecommerce sites have little content other than product descriptions.

Link building is something to constantly work on since it contributes to how credible Google finds your site to be. Link building is painful! lol

Overall, though, I really love running this kind of business. It's a creative challenge but you still get to deal with customers - horse/livestock/pet people are great customers to have, too!

Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions!

I recently collaborated with Abto Software for their artificial intelligence development services, and the experience was exceptional. Their team's expertise in machine learning and natural language processing was evident as they delivered a solution that perfectly aligned with my business needs.
