I have a horse who has a hind end lameness that we cannot figure out. Been to the vet all last year with injections lasting only a couple of weeks. Recommended to get a full body workup done with a bone scan to figure out where she's sore. Has anyone done this and is it usually worth it? I wouldn't do it if I didn't really like this horse!

I did it on a good mare if mine and found her issue. I think it's expensive but worth it in the long run. You can see all the issues the horse may have.

Expensive, like over $1200?

Yes it was $1300 for just a half scan. I knew her lameness was in her hind end so I just did the half scan to save me some money.

I had a bone scan for my mare and feel that it was worth every cent.  It found her lameness ans I was able to get injections and get her fixed.  It also gave me peace of mine because so many vets gave me ideas of possible diagnoses.

Hopefully this is the case for me. If we can find a certain spot to maintain instead of a guessing game it would be worth it!

What about doing thermo imaging?  Its not near as expensive from what I've heard.  I am anxious to have the thermo done on a gelding I have.

I was told by a vet that thermal imaging isn't as great on a hind end lameness because of all the muscle. It will only show heat toward the surface, so if it's not there you won't see it.

Should be very worth it in the long run for sure.

OK Thank you or the info!  I don't know much about it yet.

Do X-rays for kissing spine FIRST!! Did full work up to the tune of $3500. Found nothing. Did $250 worth of spine X-rays as an afterthought. It was kissing spine! Thousands in vet bulls thinking it was hind end problem, but he was making himself sore compensating for the actual problem.

My vet said you can't diagnosis kissing supine disease with X-rays. You have to do a bone scan or something that is more in depth then X-rays.

If you opt for thermal Imaging get your horse to vet as soon as you can after a run! Don't lay off and give soreness a chance to subside! It can be helpful in finding lameness'

Guess nobody told Texas A&M that when they diagnosed mine, the X-rays didn't show the vertabrae all smashed together, and Dr Honnas didn't do surgery based on those xrays? X-rays DO show kissing spine!

A bone scan will only diagnose boney abnormalities. Have you ultra sounded to rule out ligament and tendon problems?

Would it be better to get an MRI done?

X-rays will definitely show kissing spine disease! Seen it myself!

I would get the horse real sore and do the thermo image dont or find a lamness locator to try to pinpoint what direction to look.

When I had the bone scan done at Ohio State University they did the first scan for soft tissue and then did a second scan for bone.  The final report was very comprehensive.

No offense but I would find another vet because you most certainly can diagnose Kissing Spine with x rays! My horse had KS and was diagnosed using X-rays by two different vets. I did the bone scan as well. The bone scan was 1600 and was only done to see if there were any other issues we were missing. To me it was a wasted 1600 and would most likely not do it again. Plus if it is a soft tissue issue a bone scan will not show anything. Ultimately everything went back to the KS and he had surgery 5 months ago.

We just finished with the 6th vet only to figure out the horse has kissing spine. Of course it was determined by xrays and she is acting perfectly normal, turning once again, so I would say that I didn't need anything more than xrays as it was perfectly obvious. Maybe check with another vet, like I said it took 6 to determine our problem.
