I have a co-worker that is getting married in mid-May at 5:30 PM. I asked her what the attire should be and she said cocktail dresses for the ladies. I asked about the guys, and she just kinda shrugged. I said is khakis and a button up with tie ok? She said yes, or a dinner jacket.

I did a google search and most folks are saying dinner jacket or a seersucker. I have no idea what either of those are. This is a very "prestigous" couple that is getting married and I don't want myself or my husband to be underdressed, but he does not even own a suit. Any suggestions?

ETA: Wedding and reception will be held outside.

get a sport coat and some nice slacks for him! and then you can keep it more casual by putting him in a pressed button up and no tie.

thats what my SO does and i don't think he's ever been considered under dressed.

Here's the google results for sport coats so you can get a mental image.

Here's Menswarehouse sport coats which are usually a nice quality and fit well.

Im about 99% sure that my hubby would wear starched blue jeans, his nice square toe boots, a nice shirt, and a (tailored) sport jacket... may add a hat depending on who the people were.

I would say khakis with sport coat/blazer over a button up shirt, tie optional. I wouldn't go out and buy a suit. Definitely not jeans.

I've typed out a reply 3 times now & tried to attach a link or a picture - and each time it deletes.  UGH  --

So, check out Jos A Banks for good deals.

He does need to wear a sports coat at least / In May, he can get away linen pants & maybe a seersucker jacket?  Khaki's would be a tad casual at that time of day for a wedding.  It needs to look more like a suit than a sports coat & pants, and he'll need a tie.

On the other hand, a dinner jacket is technically too dressy.  A true dinner jacket is the jacket portion of a tux, usually resevered for 7pm or later weddings and even then, rarely worn by more than the wedding party anymore?

Seersucker is a traditional southern fabric.  It's the subltly striped cotton fabric that slightly puckers ( that's a horrible description).

eta:  if I remember correctly J O Banks, puts seersucker suits on sale every year around Easter.  That might be a better value because after the wedding he can wear the pants seperately without the jacket & he can wear the jacket with Khaki's and other pants.  Unlike a lot of suits, they can be separated & still look good.  They're also cooler in warm weather.
