All of our big water tanks (we have anywhere from 6' to 10' tanks) are "tire tanks". That's what we use on our ranch for pasture watering as well. Ours are all permanently installed with concrete bottoms but you can buy ones with metal bottoms as well. We just clean them out with a large transfer pump. Vacuums the water and gunk right off the bottom in minutes.

2 of ours have tank heaters in them. The rest are energy free since we have so many head of livestock drinking out of them so we don't have to worry about heat in them. Sometimes if it's really, really cold we have to break some ice but usually it's not a big deal.
