Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | My mare tested positive just over a year ago, after becoming fully blown neurological--couldn't walk. In hindsight we're pretty sure she'd had it for over 2 years at that point. I treated her with Oroquin 10, which is a 10 day paste treatment that cost me $225 for the regimen. HUGE, HUGE improvements.
I tried to maintain her on Vit E/Selenium, and she will not eat it. I can put a scoop in her feed, and after she eats I can measure a full scoop back out. I chose to put her back on Animal Element Detox (she was on it before, and actually didn't fully express symptoms until I let her run out of it). To get some extra Vit E in her, I feed her alfalfa pellets. It's not enough IMO, but it's something, and sure enough more than she was getting not eating the supplement. She's done phenominal. Not only returned to competition, but returned better than she was before. She was a MUCH happier horse and 100% easier to haul. I also use magnetic therapy on her when I haul her to keep any inflammation down.
I did chose to retreat her at just past the one year mark--she's actually got today and tomorrow left on her 10 day treatment. I chose to do it during her transitional heat, because her heat cycles were a big trigger before. It was her transitional, combined with running out of AE that sent her down so fast last year. She began showing a little sensativity around her face and her muscles hardened up, so I ordered meds and got her going right away. She's already back to normal. |
