Im with you. We've never used them, but sold a gelding last year who got caught in the people's bale feeder a month later... he was cast with a leg caught in the tombstone thing and had passed away by the time they found him.

I dont think there is really anyway to stop a horse from getting in a hay ring, might just be best to take it out so your friend wont have any more problems.

A local gal had a horse get inside and flipped upside down recently in a tombstone feeder.  The only safe thing is like someone else mentioned is use no feeder.  I perfer to use the above ground that sits a few feet off the ground in a cradle type holder.  There are some people that don't like them either.

This is the 1st time I've seen a tombstone type feeder. At the risk of sounding stupid, is there a reason you can't drill holes and run a smooth cable of some type around the top of it?

That would be similar to a cattle feeder and the horses will get their manes rubbed off.

Put some slack in between the dividers and use cable clamps inside the dividers so all the slack can't be pulled to one place.

It sure might work Komet.  As you know, we're dealing with horses that will hurt themselves no matter how hard we try to keep them safe.

don't use em...

my gelding also does this and he isn't exactly small.. 16 hh, beefy guy and he just loves to sleep in the hay. According to his previous owner he's always done this and I would rather waste a little hay then have a big giant vet bill, or worse, lose him. I'm still baffled at how he hasn't broken his mile long legs doing this so many times before!

agreed....I finally tossed my feeder out because my filly and colt liked to crawl into the feeder and lay down on the hay....then they were stuck inside of it.

I now just set a bale out in the pasture, cut the net-wrap off and let them go to town. I'm looking at possibly getting one of those manger (sp?) feeders that can hold a round bale. They look pretty handle with mininal waste

We just use a basic hay ring. It's flat on top.

OK, this is a terrible picture, because it's not a picture of the bale feeder (it's Hums playing, but the feeder is in the background). It's kinda hard to tell because it's full of hay too, but this is the kind I have. They are custom built by a guy not far from us (I sell them at my office, but I have to order them in).
 photo 6F04E55D-1BEA-4E7C-9691-B391706853C9_zpsjtgvt1ba.png

The "tombstones" are trianglualr, open to the top. The triangles are covered, so they can't stick a head or foot in them, only the open spaced "v's". They work great. Comfortable for the horses, but closed enough that they don't try to crawl in. I'm sure there is a horse out there that would try it. As my dad says, they can tear up an anvil with a rubber mallet...

We use round bale feeders almost year round, and I have never had one get inside the feeder. Ours are the tombstone type made for horses. We did have a freak accident several years ago where my mare got her hind leg inside one of the bars of the tombstone. I have absolutely no idea how she got in there, but we think she might have rolled towards the feeder and stuck her hoof through it sideways because that is the only possible way it could have fit. We had to use a saws-all to cut her out of it.

I guess my suggestion would be to take the feeder out and fork him hay daily, otherwise you risk injury and a vet bill.

Will not use a typical metal one. Had to put down a good 4 yr old several years ago from bale feeder damage. Have had several wrecks even with cattle around them.

The best one is a large tractor or earth mover tire about 6' in diameter with the top side wall cut out just like the tire tanks. They are heavy so horses will not move them also.

Just my 2 cents.

Good luck!
