Location: Bandera, TX | I rode at the public arena here in town yesterday, and this lady comes by asking to pet my horse. She loves horses but doesn’t have one right now, and needs her horsy fix…. I tell her sure and introduce my very handsome and very sweet gelding to her. Not 20 seconds later she is slobbering allover Boo’s nose. I really had to bite my tongue not to say anything to her. I don’t know, but she might as well just start smooching all over my boy-friend….. I hope Boo doesn’t have cooties now, I almost stuck his head in a bucket of Clorox. Am I the only one who hates that? Petting is one thing, but almost French kissing a strangers horse….?? |

LOL, I have never had that happen but I did have a lady come ask if she could borrow a brush and curry comb. Sure I say, she comes back in a few minutes to return them and saids she left hers at home, she has to wash them everyday because horse has a fungus. I'm like really???? just lay them on the ground, I don't want my horses to get it, I need to disinfect them now. She saids OK, thanks and walks off. |

Location: Minnesota | I would feel the same way. I have no issue with people wanting to come over and pet one of my horses but that may be crossing the line. I get a lot of people that come up to Vinny, my gelding, since he has frost bitten ears. They think he is "so adorable" and just want to pet him. That is completely fine but he's a nervous horse and I had a older child(maybe 12) run up to him once and I actually yelled at her. I felt bad but you just don't do things like that. Just like you don't slobber all over the nose of someone else's horse. |

| The only time anyone else has smootched one of my horses was at the State fair. We were up there for the Cowgirl queen contest and the parking lot was about 6-8 blocks from the arena, so we had to ride through the middle of the fair. A group of special needs kids were walking through the area and I had to stop my horse to wait for a traffic jam. One of the special needs kids jumped right in front of my horse, grabbed her face in both hands and planted one square on the nose!
It was a good thing she was used to me doing that!! She didn't even twitch an eyelash!
The leader of the special needs group was appalled and apologetic. I just smiled and said no harm, no foul. I have had several horses that would have thrown their heads and broke the kids nose. Thankful that one time turned out ok! |

I even let little munchkins kiss and love all over my mare. I feel they should get the chance to be able to be next to a horse, even if it's just once in their whole life.
Just my 2 cents. |

What bothered me a few summers back, we went out of town, and my dad was feeding the horses for us. His wife and her kids were in town, so they came by with him. He had the nerve to go put a halter on my mare and let the kids ride her around bareback. And this was after repeated times of them asking me if they could ride her, and me saying no. So I guess as long as I'm not around, it's ok? I no longer trust my own dad to feed for us. I feel that a line was crossed. |

Ditto. What problem did this cause - really? My gelding will stick his face out to be kissed. His breeder taught him that as a baby. She is not going to give your horse any disease, why can't you look at it as maybe it brightened her day to show affection to an animal in this way? You are being WAY over dramatic. |

I was thankful it was my gelding standing there and not my mare or she might have gotten stupid over the whisk broom. LOL I wasn't sure if the guy was trying to be funny or if he was seriously brushing my horse. Hmmmm |

And the reason I let her pet my gelding was that he loves attention, the mare would not have taken it so kindly. I love the effect horses can have on anyone - horse person or not, and usually promote people being around horse in any way I can.
Nothing lights up my day more than when my friends handicappped grandson sits on my horse and has the biggest smile on his face. |

I'd stick to worrying about things that really matter. My son, Jeff, is kinda OCD...everything has to be perfectly clean and neat all the time. I mean this kid has to take aloe vera ass wipes with him wherever he goes. He can't just wipe his ass after pooping...he has to wash it. He's a dog lover and has a springer who loves to lick faces.....so that's an exception. One day I had just finished riding a horse and had just taken off his tack and brushed him down. I gave him a big ole smooch on the muzzle and Jeff says "On the lips? You kiss your horse on the lips??? Jeez dad!" I asked him, "Have you ever smelled a horse with bad breath...ever? You think that's gross, yet your dog licks her ass and vagina and then you let her lick your face?" |

I am lucky they found it funny! Now that I look back it was nuts but thats college life! |

| I have one guy who wants to kiss one of our fillies and it drives me nuts only because he isn't a very good guy and I can't stand him as a person. I don't usually mind we have a couple of real love bug mares we haul and if I leave them at the trailer I almost always come back to some little girls hanging out petting and giving kisses. |

I don't care who touches my horses, as long as they ask me for permission. I've had some fruit loops before and hand movements around their eyes/ears would send them nutso.
Us horse people tend to forget that horses are a luxury and that the majority of people may have never even touched one before. |

My orphaned colt LOVES to lick. He will lick your face like a dog. Once I inadvertently, apparently had my mouth open near his face and at that moment, he decided to lick me and I GOT TONGUE!!! Ewwwwww!!!!!!!!
I love my ponies but that was just too far.
Edited to add: I bet that would cure the original OP's "problem"

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Most of my horses love licking on me....arms, hands, face, back of my neck. It doesn't even bother me if I catch a little tongue action myself once in a while. Horses mouthes are cleaner than humans, I'm pretty sure. My horse Bear somethimes will move his teeth up and down my arm....not biting, but he just moves his teeth down my arm or across my hand. That's his way of saying he needs attention. Sometimes he's not in the mood for attention and he'll tell you, but when he is in the mood he's pretty demanding and possessive. He's human. |

I dont mind the petting, but dont stand in front of my horse and start giving kiss'es, that would be a no no for me too. This women needs to be carefull of the next horse that she smooches on it might try to take her face off. |

I agree, you never know... it just might create a spark that gets someone involved with horses for a lifetime! I know if it hadn't been for a special person encouraging me to ride I'd have never set foot on a horse...24 years later... still crazy about them. |

I have one of one people who dislikes most of my posts too, maybe we have the same person.
To the op, I probably would have had a heart attack, as my horses probably would have head butted them, as I don't give kisses, and I have young horses.
Personally I don't like any one petting my horses on the face, I will let people pet them on the neck and shoulder but I am closest to the head |

You think that's gross, yet your dog licks her ass and vagina and then you let her lick your face?" Why in Gods Green Earth would someone give this post a dislike? Sometimes I sit here and really scratch my head. Not that I pay attention to those "likes" and "dislikes", but that is amusing. I don't think it's the post, per se', rather, it's probably someone who just plain "dislikes" me and everything I say! There are plenty of those. LOL
yep I have one of "those" people too that randomly dislikes my posts. I have a pretty good idea who it is. Just for the sake of argument I kiss my horses and I also kiss my dogs. During calving season I prefer not to get kissed back from the dogs though. |

Thankful that one time turned out ok! horses and dogs aren't stupid... they just know... (((HUG))) that pony and give her extra treats for that one! My special needs nephew is lacking fear and inhibitions and has poor impulse control. At my house one day he disappeared. I started hollering for him and he popped up in the pen with my spastic mare waving arms and yelling with her standing calmly right behind him. They definitely know.
Im not surprised... ;) My dogs are not normally around children, but my autistic nephew can scream and yell at them and they just adore him, but if a adult comes and yells in my house, they are all over it... Gotta love animal effect |

I even let little munchkins kiss and love all over my mare. I feel they should get the chance to be able to be next to a horse, even if it's just once in their whole life.
Just my 2 cents. Ditto. What problem did this cause - really? My gelding will stick his face out to be kissed. His breeder taught him that as a baby. She is not going to give your horse any disease, why can't you look at it as maybe it brightened her day to show affection to an animal in this way? You are being WAY over dramatic.
Every baby that Mary has sent us has been a "kisser" .... I love it!
There are several on here that sound like they need to take a lesson in sharing from my pre-schooler...it's not like the lady was begging to take him for a pony ride. |

I let old men whisk broom my horses....does that count??? I've also had parents bring up small children and ask if they can pet the pretty horse. I always say absolutely. I try to teach the kids that kissing horses on the nose is a good thing and good for the heart and soul. I've had many of them look at me like I'm nuts. LOL |

About approaching strangers horses.....I had a couple of drinks one night at a local rodeo. Bozo had made one of his amazing runs. He is my favorite. So Kristie Peterson comes walking by with him. I had just bought a nice tie down. I stopped Kristie Peterson and asked if I could pet Bozo. I wanted some of his sweat to wipe on my tiedown for good luck. I started petting him and I said to her "It's like touching Elvis." She laughed. Nice lady and I still have Bozo's DNA on that tiedown. I never cleaned it. |

She's one of the best! And I bet Bozo could have cared less if you were there or not... I fogged the front of his stall once in OKC... and I think he was WAY less then thrilled but Kristie didn't care at all that I drooled down his stall door...lol Love that story NonaY |

Doggy kisses are a big no for me too! My dogs will scarf down horse poop like it's filet mignon and there's no way I want that all over my face! I don't mind horse kisses, although they're very uncommon for me. Not too crazy about cow kisses...their tongues are rough! |

Location: Beautiful Pacific Northwest | I have to admit I think I might've done that w/Martha Josey's horse Orange Smash. She was at our rodeo & just hanging at her trailer & we went down to get her autograph & I was so in awe of Orange Smash. I was stuck to him like velcro & THEN she let me hold her little doggy & I think I let him lick my face... It was definetly a "awwwww" moment for me. So I have no problem of letting people pet on my horses & even kiss on them if they want. |

I was at a barrel race and there was a kid there you could tell was horse crazy. I put him on my horse and led him around. I'd of been in seventh heaven if someone had done the same for me at that age. |

| OK.. WHAT are you afraid your horse is going to catch from a human? I always try to allow people interested in my horse to pet him, and love on him. My horse can be very grouchy, so I do watch him, and if there are little kids I watch him very closely, but I feel it is the least I can do. Especially when at a rodeo where sometimes that is the only place these kids get to see a horse up close. I love that they get a thrill from it, and I sweat, my horse likes the attention too. |

Location: Texas | I'm probably the odd one out. But I actually don't let strangers touch my horse's face. My buckskin draws in a lot of attention because of her golden dapple color, so when people want to pet her I let them pet her shoulder only.
No kisses and no getting up in my horse's face. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind people loving on my horse. Heck I've been known to stand near the entrance to rodeos and let all the little kids love on her. Pet her shoulder and neck all day long, but don't touch her face.

Location: Midwest Farmer's Daughter: Central Illinois | My only thought is that it could be physically dangerous - the calmest horse in the world could randomly toss his nose & then you have a stranger who could sue you & win for damages. Bruises, broken nose, if their tongue is between their teeth & they bite it...lots of things can happen when hard horse face hits human face.

| There was a Lady that liked to kiss the Horses in My Barn. One day I had just brought My Horse out of the pasture where it was dry and dusty. She came up to kiss Him on the nose . He got a whiff of Her perfume and Sneezed black dirty nose boogers all over Her face. She never kissed Him again !!! |
