Location: Foot of the Smoky Mtns, East Tennessee | Some of you all remember my foaling post on Cricket last year. She "officially" turned a year old this past Thursday. We lost her on Sunday. From what we can tell (along with the vets) she was possibly shot and it shattered her shoulder. Surgery was not an option because the vet didn't think it could be pieced together and hold with screws. So, we put her down. We chose not to do an autopsy to retrieve the bullet because we didn't want her cut on. Even if we had, we wouldn't know where to begin to finding who did it. I'm sure it was an accident though. We live out and gunfire out here is pretty common. We are devastated. She loved people and especially my daughter. I know we are going to get used to Cricket not being with us, but please say a prayer for us. Losing one is never easy, but under these circumstances it seems harder on us this time. It was senseless and tragic. Hope you don't mind but I'd like to share a few pics. The last one of her and my daughter with the halter on was taken two weeks ago. RIP I'm High On Firewater "Cricket"

We talked to the police. Even if they had the bullet there is no way they could determine who did it unless they searched every house in our county and ran tests on every gun they found to find a match. In our minds having her cut up wouldn't have solved anything and we didn't want that for her. |

Yep, that is our stallion's dam. What a really sad, sad story for Hero's sister. We sold one of our favorite colts to some people out of Ok. some years back and within a year they called to see if we had anymore babies by this mare and stallion because come to find out the colt had been shot somehow in the pasture and he didn't make it!!! Needless to say, we were in shock and told them "No, as he was one the last of Go Man Go's grandet!" To the op, I'm very sorry about your loss of Cricket. |

We lost one in a similar manner. We believe the dumb*** was shooting at a big buck known to hang out near our pastures at home. The bullet ricocheted off a pump head and hit one of our old men right between the eyes (originally we thought a shot that accurate had to be intentional, it was not until the next spring when we turned the water back on to the barn that we discovered the pump head had been hit). Our minds were eased by the fact that he was old and winter was becoming harder and harder on him - he may not have made it much longer anyway and he died knee deep in good grass hay.
I can only imagine it's much harder losing a young one with so much potential ahead of them.
If you do feel the need to do something - write a letter to the editor if your local paper is well read. My mom did that every few months for about a year. It was comforting to her to think that somewhere the person who did it was reading it and hopefully feeling guilt to match our grief.
