| I am looking for a new project horse.. As my mare is off and on unsound.
I found a lovely coming 3 yr old smoky black Qh/paint filly. She is small, only 13.3hh expected to mature around 14.1-2.
On her sires side.. Nu chex to cash, peppy san badger, colonel freckles, king fritz
On her dams side... Jet smooth (jet deck), top deck
I know peppy san badgers are good cow horses, as well as king fritz.. Has anyone had horses with this breeding on barrels? How do you think she'd do?
Also, any shorter horses out there running barrels?
Worst case scenario.. I could resale her this summer once some works done on her.. She's only $300 :)

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I rode some really nice cowhorses for a guy and loved anything that came in Colonel Freckles bred, also a fan of King Fritz. I can't help but think the Jet smooth would be a little further back to contribute much, but either way, it is a line I love, especially if through a daughter of his. |

| Thanks! Yes, the jet smooth is way back.. Great great grandfather I believe. Maybe a bit farther back. Not really any other names I recognized on the dams side.
What were the personalities of the colonel freckles horses you rode? Did they have good speed? :)
I know bloodlines don't depict the horse all the time, but it'd be nice to have a general idea of what she might be like.
From the one picture, she looks very nicely built. I am going to look at her next week and will take pictures then.
Another question.. I don't have much experience with selling horses. Would the fact that she's unregistered make her hard to sell.. Or will people overlook that If its's a nice horse? :) |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | The CF horses were bigger boned than any of the other bloodlines (Smart Little Lena, Reminic, Hollywood Dun It etc), most were horses that were by Smart Chic Olena or his sons and out of CF daughters. They were very intelligent, good sized (15-15.1) and stouter. Really liked them. They could run. I wouldn't call them FAST, but they were quick.
Sherri Cervi's horse is shorter and kicks serious booty at the NFR and most other places. So size is just what ever floats your boat. |

I absolutely LOVE stingray! Didn't realize she was short though! Guess it doesn't matter then! :)
The main thing I'm worried about is that I'm pretty tall (5'9-10) .. But this filly looks like she has substance.

She'll be small if you're that tall, but look at Sherry and StingRay...yes, her being unregistered will make her harder to sell, but for 300 bucks, depending on how well she "makes" you might could get a couple/three thousand if she winds up working really nice. I'd prefer to find something registered for just that reason, though. Good luck! and yes, I see lots of fairly short horses do pretty good... |

If I could get a couple thousand I'd be perfectly happy! Not sure if I would sell her or not. I was planning on buying an already started horse.. But for $300 I'm really tempted. Anyways, I do have a ton of time of my hands it might be good for me to have a project :) |

| I'm 5'9, and my horse is 14.1 - 14.2, and she has never had a problem, and I don't feel too big. She is stouter built, like your horse. |

| ^^ I love that! So true! And come to think of it... All the really fast runners I know are pretty short. Maybe being closer to the ground makes you able to move faster since you don't have such long legs to work around. :) |

| So I'm going to look at her today! Anything in particular I should ask or look for? She said she can be hard to catch but is friendly and likes pets if you dont have a halter. Doesn't sound like she's had anything done with her much at all.
I've never went to look at an unbroke horse before. I have boughten at auction.. Checking over legs, running hands all over, watching them move around. Anything else? |

| So I looked at her today.. As well as her half sister who's a year older! They were super friendly and sweet.. Loved attention and scratches! I really liked the build of the black one(pictures on this thread) but she has pretty much been not handled at all. She comes up and you can pet her everywhere.. But when you try to restrain with a halter or rope she runs away... Then comes back. The lady said she never really learned to lead as she didn't have time.
The other filly is turning 4.. But only 13.3-14hands right now. She's also smaller built. She os bum high so she should grow a bit more. She is halterbroke, leads, stands for farrier, deworms etc. She's also a bit more personable. I like her personality more.. But doesn't look like she will be big enough for me.
The black filly is the same height at a year younger.. So she should grow more. Her conformations nice.. Has a nice hip and big shoulders. But would be a huge huge project.
Not sure what I should do :/ |

| MYSTIBOO ... read your posts and write down one good thing you have had to say about this solid paint, unbroken, unregistered, unhandled, can't be caught, very short, tall rider, never had an unbroken horse and hoping a short cutting bred has speed enough to run barrels.
Just walk on by and never regret the decision and find you something with more pluses than negatives.
If you do buy this pony type paint filly do so with the intent over the next 3 years of making a kid horse out of her and losing money in the long term and possibly getting injured.

No, your right. I can't control myself.. I need to chain my hands down! There really isn't anything about her that I'm looking for.. I guess because she's so cheap I was trying to find a reason to want her.
I know better for sure.. Just needed someone to bring me back to reality. So thank you!

Location: North Central Iowa Land of white frozen grass | She is only cheap in perseption. If she only turns out to be a kids horse in the end she might be a very expensive learning event. Walk away and put your labor and money into something that will fit you better in the long run. Unless you want to make some kid a nice horse. |
