So I was watching some of my videos from last year and I "think" I see my mares hind end sliding out especially on the first. Should I put a shoe on her back feet? She only has front shoes. I'm going to try and post the videos I see it so hopefully it works.

I don't see slipping, but your horse may have hock problems, the swishing the tail can be a sign, and on her second barrel, she leaves the barrel cross firing, her hind end is on the wrong lead, this is telling me she has amazing heart, and there is something hurting her. I can't tell if she is doing this on the first as it it not a good video angle and too far away.

Take her to a vet and they weill watch her move, flex her and see how she moves off, x-rays if necessary.   A lot of barrel horses need hock injections at some point in their career.

Looks hock sore to me too. Also you're kicking the wind out of her. That's probably not helping with her wringing her tail. They don't go faster when you are literally kicking the air out of them. If spurring them made them go faster you'e see race jockeys kicking and spurring. A little kicking is ok,just don't be so aggressive, it usually just shortens their stride. You can RIDE aggressively without kicking so aggressively.

How do I go about finding out if they are hurting her? Xray?

I would suggest taking to the vet get the flexion texts done, then the vet may suggest blocking to make sure it is the hock problem, then once confirmed in that area X-rays.

I suggest getting the vet to flexion test, then X-ray if money is tight. DO NOT allow the vet to inject without X-rays.

Also if your horse needs X-rays, I suggest HA, trimethsinalone, and an antibiotic, as there is a lot of research done that trimethsinalone can promote cartilage growth, where as the others the betamethasone, depomethasone can deteriorate the cartilage.

Once you start injecting you may be injecting every 3-4 months as arthritis is degenerative disease. It can be costly in the long run depending on how old the horse is. This also depends on the X-rays of course.

If the hocks are bad, I would suggest fusion, I have had a few horses fused by laser, it is expensive about 5k but then you never have to worry about them again and you are back riding in 3 weeks.

There also is alcohol but the success rate is poor, painful, quite a rehab regime, and the horse is out for 6 months. It is cheaper but you have to do a contrast study to ensure there is no communication between the upper joint.

I am not a vet but just had a lengthy discussion with my vet on this as I am going through the same thing

Please do your research before you go to the vet, and once you have a diagnosis do some more research so you are well informed before you make your decision

If you want you can pm me and I am more them willing to steer you in the right research direction

I'm usually that person that doesn't kick!!! I just started kicking her and we've moved up at least half a second. She has always rung her tail.
