I was lucky enough to have a 70 year old saddle smith take me under his wing. May not be an option but if you can find a master leather worker and take lessons that way you can save trial and error and learn all the little tricks. Tools are expensive but you need to invest in quality tools. Keep all of your tools super sharp. Those lessons were invaluable to me. If you were near me I would help ya. I love building quality heirloom pieces for clients. Its very rewarding to learn this craft

Is there a Tandy Leather near you? They offer classes you can take, they also have kits you can buy to make certain items. If not, any saddle makers you can learn from in your area?
There are ALOT of tools needed when doing leather work between the sewing machines, stamps and so much more, it gets expensive to have "all you need"

my boyfriend thru college made tack. Like gorgeous tack with the inlays and all that. kind of like the clover d stuff and what you'd get from leather makers on facebook. His supplies alone just to START were a couple thousand. Its expensive and REALLY time consuming. If you get into it though, im sure its good fun. I'd just rather drop 700 for a tack set than spend thousands of dollars and tons of time.

for conchos i used triggleather.net. They are great to work with. I would buy my crystals from ebay. I used a glue called e6000. you can get it at any craft store or walmart
