So, my barrel horse was out playing pretty hard yesterday and he came in with swelling on the outside of his right front leg. Below the knee and above his pastern, mostly towards the top of his cannon bone area. No swelling on the back of the leg. Slight amout of heat. He was sound yesterday, but today he is a bit off, the swelling is still there and he heat is almost gone. I felt his tendons and he didnt have any pain with me moving them around and putting pressure on them. Towards the top was a bit more "hard" feeling but he didn't react. Any idea what it could be?

If i am picturing it right that is where the chex ligament is. When the horses tear it they are not usually lame or are slightly because I believe it's purpose is to keep the horses standing while they sleep and doesn't interfere with movement too much. My gelding tore his in the font and it swelled and thickened and had a little bump that was hard. Does it feel thick? Is there a bump? He was slightly off the second day, not the first day it happened.

It could be a fractured cannon bone, had one that had localized swelling size of golf ball and she fractured her cannon bone.

I would suggest getting a vet check
