I'm looking at a couple fillies. One is 2, 3 this spring. And the other is 3, 4 this spring.
The coming 3 yr old is about 13.3-14hh right now.. And the coming 4 yr old is about 13.3hh

They are both qh/paints, and both a bit bum high. How much more would they possibly grow? I'd like to have a horse at least 14.2hh.
Also how long do they keep filling out?
Thanks!!

I think it really depends on each individual horse on how fast they will grow. I have a coming 5 year old that I bought in September and he was around 15-15.1 when I bought him and he has grown 1 or 2 inches since then. He is kind of like a gangly teenager. He has really long legs and he hasn't quite gotten used to them yet. I have a coming 2 year old as well and he is tiny probably around 13 hands (I've never measured him). He has a lot of growing to do yet his sire is 15 hands and his dam is about 15.3. I had a 4 year old about a year ago who never got any taller when I bought him he just filled out ALOT. He was about 15.2, his half brother that I owned was about the same height but not as stocky.

If you are able to see any other horses along the same bloodlines as yours you can get an idea of how fast they may grow and fill out. I think that by the time they are 5 they should be done filling out or in the process of filling out. As for their height I realize that most horses will grow into the same range as their sire and dam, but we own 2 full brothers and the only thing really different about them is their size. One is 14.3 and the other is 16.1 people have a hard time believing that they are brothers just because of their size difference.

I hope yours grow to the sizes that you are wanting!

I've had a few horses grow 2+ inches after their 4th birthday.  My coming 4 sticked at 15.1 last time I measured a few months ago and I'm pretty sure she's growing again right now.  Her dam is 15.2 and she's built a lot like her, so I'm expecting her to hit that.

My grey  mare didn't stop growing until she was around 5-6. She was about 14.2hh when I originally bought her, and she now tops out around 15.2hh.

My coming 2 year old will probably be 15.2-15.3hh, I'm sure he will be a big boy because he has a nice big bone structure to him.

Everyones right ... they are all different but yes, a lot of horses do grow after 4-5.  My DFP/Easy jet gelding grew thru his 6 year old year!

I don't think that question can be answered without comparing similar horses. Do you have a way you can talk to some people that may own siblings? Very one above has horses that grew a fair amount, but that isn't always the case.

I bought a filly the spring of her 2 yr old year and she was 14.1. She's now 5 and she's 14.2, maybe 14.3 in shoes (and did that growing her 2 year old year, was done at 3). Had another I bought as an early 3 year old that was 13.3 and in the 6 months I had her she didn't grow up at all, but did fill out. Another was 14.2 when I got her as a 2 year old, is 3 now and is 15.0.

I wouldn't count on the 4 year old growing much if at all, and wouldn't on the 3 year old either if it is something that is important to you. Not to say they won't grow, but if you won't be happy with them around the size they are I would definitely pass on the 4 year old. Might take a chance on the 3 year old if you were in love, but in my experience I wouldn't expect to get more than another 2 inches out of her. There's no way to guarantee they will grow. Just my opinion on it :)

I think people have it all wrong when they worry about how tall a yearling/2 2 yr old is NOW. What are the parents? That is your biggest guarantee right there. Babies are fed different, grow different, come from parents that mature different. So you might have a 14 hand 2yr old and a 13.3 hand 2yr old. The 14 hand may be nearly done growing and hit 14.2 the 13.3 may just grow slow and end up 15 hands. It's so hard to say. Your best bet is to see what the parents are if they are both 15.1, chances are you will get 15-15.2. Not much smaller and not much bigger than either parent. There are exceptions to the rule, some horses sire bigger than they are. I have a 3yr old colt that is by a 16.2 sire and 15.3 dam. He is 16.1 at the withers and 16.3 at the hip. He may reach his string test potential of 17.1 or he may just level out at 16.3. Either way he has already passed his sire, but that seems to be the norm with these bloodlines.

My gelding grew from about 15.2 to over 16H between his 5 and 6 yr old year.  He was a late bloomer.  I bought him in Nov. of his 4 yr old year, during his 5 yr old year he was scrawny.  The next year at 6, I had people asking if I bought a different horse he grew up and filled out so much.
