One of my best friends horses had an injury and the wound was deep enough it was a perfect environment for Tetanus.  They caught it fairly quickly and got him to the vet, but he still needs all the help he can get!
He is 1D-2D and a beautiful copper color with flaxen mane and tail.  He is also my horse's best friend at shows.  They go bonkers when they see each other and have to cuddle up!
So please, any prayers you could spare would be wonderful! He's responding to treatment, but he still has a major difficult road ahead of him!  Thank you!

He had a booster right after injury, but for some reason, it obviously didn't help.

My good friend had the same thing happen last year to her stud.  I don't know if some horses just don't respond right to the vaccine or what not but he did have a full blown case of tetanus and came through it just fine.  I know the odds of that happening are not very high but he spent 2 weeks at the vet in a secluded stall that didn't have much light (they get so light sensitive) and was given the proper meds to treat the infection and tetanus.  Looking at him you'd never know he was so close to death a few months ago.  I hope your friend has as good of luck with pulling one through this as we did.

Oh it's so good to hear a recovery story!  When I looked up data online, it said it was about a 20% success rate for recovery.  Thank you!

Thanks, Rae, for asking for prayers. I have been following Ace's bout with tetanus. He is a very neat horse and his owner is one of the nicest young ladies that I have known since she was a baby. Many in the race horse industry know Levi and her father, Kenny Muntz. This horse is a "gem" and can win in all kinds of arenas, etc......They have him secluded in the dark, watching (via cam) and giving all of the meds, etc. He seems to be getting better but they could sure use the prayers......

 Hi all,

I can't thank everyone enough for the amount of support and prayers that Ace is receiving!! I am truly blessed to know how much my boy is loved by all! He is making good progress. He continues to eat and drink and is being very good about all the medication! He is not out of the woods but he is fighting! He is a very spirited horse and has the will to survive! Again I can't thank everyone enough! Every little prayer makes a difference!

Ace Update - After night chores - He ate all of his grain and hay from this morning! Drank a little less water today than yesterday but still drinking! Taking his electrolytes and aloe like a champ! Not getting so upset when given the penicillin and got the go ahead to stop the gentamicin! Going to try and go the night with no bute again and hope it goes as well as last night! Everyday that passes his chances go up but he is still not out of the woods! As always just keep praying!! And Thank you all soo much!!!

At 8:19 Ace has ate half a flake of hay, went out to give him another flake to make sure he has enough thru the night. Also, he took a treat from mom and turned around and wanted another!!! I do not underestimate the power of prayer and the fight in that horse!!! Hoping for another peaceful night!

Ace Update - I think not eating in so long and eating so much in the last couple days he has gotten full! He is just standing resting right now. At four this morning he was a little restless, went and gave him aloe and some bute and he calmed down. Went to chore at 8 and gave him his penicillin, aloe and electrolytes and even got some salve on his wounds with no stress! Symptoms still seem to be the same even though his eyes look a little better to me! Said a Prayer over him this morning by recommendation of a lady from barrel horse world and bawled like a baby! He is not out of the woods yet, it has been 13 days since the accident occurred, 7 days since we noticed his eyes were different and 6 days since the vet! He still has a long road ahead of him so all I can ask is that you just keep praying!!!!

Still praying for Ace!

May the Lord please watch over him and remove the sickness from his body. May He help him relax and fight through the pain. May He watch over his caretakers and keep them in good spirtits and health so they may take care of Ace.  In Jesus' name we pray, Amen..

Ace Update - He was pretty restless today. Not sure if he ate anything or drank anything. Took his night meds like a champ. I syringed some water into him just to be sure he is staying hydrated. Spent about an hour brushing him and cleaning his stall! He really enjoyed my company and was relaxed! Hoping he has a good night tonight! As always please keep praying for him! He is not out of the woods but he is fighting the battle to win!!!!

Ace Update - He had a fairly good night! He might have gotten a little food in his system and he drank some water. Gave him his meds early this morning with no trouble! He is trying hard to eat, his mouth just isn't being the most cooperative. Mixed him up some mash hoping that will help! Also, got his stall picked and brushed him down! He really enjoys me being with him!!! He is not being as restless as he has been lately! So very thankful for his prayer warriors! We are in a fight and we aren't going to back down!!! Keep on praying and we will beat this thing!!!!

Prayers to you and Ace ....

I am not a vet but you had luck with the sloppy feed ... make him some more thin enough so he can suck it up without moving his jaws since that is the main symptom of tetanus ... and think about getting him some Senior feed or one that is a total feed that contains hay/fiber in the pellets since he is not able to chew regular hay and make a soup out of too. This soupy feed will help with his water intake too...

It takes a mishap like this to remind us all that horses have live tetanus in their poop/colons and can give it to themselves by getting poop in their cuts if their immune system is low and humans can get it also thru a cut or abrasion ... so all of us humans and our kids need a 10 year booster (maybe 5 years?) that live with our horses ...

GOD BLESS !!

Ace Update - I went out to do a check before I lay down to watch the monitor for the night. He is eating hay again very slowly and still drinking water he even ate a little of his feed. Anyone who really knows Ace, knows he is an avid cribber. He doesn't wear a collar, does it when wants and still runs great. He has cribbed his whole life. When I heard him banging his bucket all day I didn't think anything of it just that he was eating again! Come to find out, the banging noise is his attempt at cribbing!! He takes a bite of hay, rubs his teeth on the edge of the feed tub(attempt at cribbing), chews a little, rubs his teeth and this goes on. He hasn't offered to even try to crib since his accident on Feb 20th. When he was healthy, he would take a bite, crib, chew, crib, chew, etc. He is resting now, but he was still doing this about 45 minutes ago and did it pretty much all day! I will never be able to thank you all enough for your continued prayers! It means the world to me as does ACE!! Keep praying warriors because we are going to beat this battle!!!!

I am so glad your horse seems to be getting better. I know you said they did the booster shot at time of injury- but I was curious- did you ever vaccinate him before with tetnus and if so how often? ((if you mentioned this already, I have overlooked it)

Some of it got swallowed cause he still can't open his mouth normally but he did spit some out! Silly Pony! We are over a week from when his eyes were different and over a week from the vet visit! Still not out of the woods but with the prayer warriors he has we will be in no time at all! So Rock On Warriors!!!! And Thank You sooooo much for your continued support on this long road!

Ace Update - Well as mom said this is the first morning when she woke up that he was eating hay and didn't look like a zombie! He continued his non zombie like state when I went to chore and give him his medicine! He is officially sick of oral medication and bounces his head trying to get away from it! I gave him his penicillin and did the rest of the chores. Got a bucket of warm water and actually got to clean his leg today! Brushed him and put his sheet on and cleaned his mess of a stall(not from being restless, he really is a pig) put some salve on his leg and did as best as I could to get the electrolytes, belly medicine and bute to keep him staying comfortable in his mouth! Filled his hay bag and gave him fresh water, he had ate almost the whole hay bag and drank almost a whole bucket of water! He tried to knock me down rubbing on me! While I was in there he had pooped and pee'd! He is doing well but still not out of the woods just yet!! Thank you soooo much prayer warriors, Keep it coming!!! We are in it to win it!!!

Ace Update - He has followed up his good morning with a good day! Hoping for another good night! He has been eating and drinking off and on all day! Only gave him penicillin tonight and he was extremely happy that I did not put anything in his mouth! No symptom changes yet but he seems to be in good spirits! I have exhausted myself today being in the barn stripping/cleaning stalls and talking to myself so Ace could hear my voice! Please keep up the great prayer work for my wonderful boy!!!

TurnLane - 2014-03-06 1:55 PM I am so glad your horse seems to be getting better. I know you said they did the booster shot at time of injury- but I was curious- did you ever vaccinate him before with tetnus and if so how often? ((if you mentioned this already, I have overlooked it)
We used to vaccinate every year. One year we did and everything got so sick we haven't since.

How many years has it been since this one was vaccinated then? I'm glad he is recovering.

Concerning tetanus vaccination, it is important to realize there are two different types of injections out there, and you want to be sure to use the right one for the right thing.

1. Tetanus anti-toxin: This is what you give a horse that has possible exposure (or is even already showing signs), but has NOT been vaccinated recently for Tetanus.  It will provide quick, short-term protection.

 2. Tetanus Toxoid: This is what you generally vaccinate with.  You do NOT want to give this in the face of an actual tetanus episode as it will make it worse. This is what will establish an active immunity for prevention against disease.

Hope your horse is doing better today!

Ace Update - He has had another good day! Ate his grain, some hay and drank some water! Only gave him penicillin this morning! Gave penicillin and belly medicine before chores. He was looking rather uncomfortable so went back out and gave bute and electrolytes! He went over 24 hrs without bute and kept eating all day! He is still not out of the woods but it can't be that far off! I still can't thank everyone enough for all of the continued support and prayers for Ace! Please Keep on Praying!

He wouldn't stop nickering tonight while we were doing chores, so we opened up his door. He didn't want to come out but he really enjoyed being able to see around the barn! His symptoms still aren't going away and it could be awhile before they subside! Still not out of the woods but you can see in his face even when he gets discouraged he is fighting!!!! Ace Update - He had a very good night and is following it up with a good morning! He was determined to eat his grain this morning! He ate about half of it and then started back on his hay bag! Drank about a half a bucket of water thru the night which is normal for him. He is eating almost a flake of hay during each feeding and drinking anywhere from a half to a whole bucket of water between each watering. He is still in good spirits and you can see the determination in his face! Keep the great prayers up! And I thank you sooo much!!!!

Ace Update - Well he kept in stride with his goodnight and morning and had a great day! He is moving his mouth more and his tail is getting looser! He ate all his grain from this morning and most of it from tonight! He ate his whole hay bag of hay and was eating the hay off the ground and was eating his hay bag when we came in from chores! He has drank at least a whole bucket of water today and had drank some from the fresh buckets at chores. He has a lot more attitude also! When I put his feed in he pinned his ears and pushed me to his feed bucket! When mom poked her head in to see if he was still eating his grain he pinned his ears and gave her the "Don't bother me, I'm eating look!" When I went to hang his hay bag he got all revved up and wanted it bad! As of right now, he is currently resting! He has had a big day today!!! I can't say THANK YOU enough to his Prayer Warriors and HUGE support system!!!! Keep up the great work my dear friends, our battle continues!!

ETA: He has not had any bute, belly medicine or electrolytes since yesterday morning!!!

I can't say it enough, Thank You Prayer Warriors!!! Keep up the great work!!!! God is listening!!!!

Sorry for no update this morning!! I had a dentist appointment to get a tooth pulled!!!!

Ace Update - We weren't sure just how much food he is actually eating or if he is just putting it in his mouth and losing it, so I made him some mash tonight and held the bucket for him, he gobbled it all up and never took his head out of the bucket except to try and crib on it!!! Today was the first day in a long time that he has came out of the stall! Got his leg thoroughly clean and medicated and his stall thoroughly clean and new bedding!! He is trying to eat his hay but not sure how much he is getting cause his mouth opens too much and he loses it. He was a good boy as far as I could tell while I was at the dentist! Symptoms are still there, praying they subside soon!!! I am still very overwhelmed with the amount of support he has!!! Keep up the great work Prayer Warriors!!!

Ace Update - Had another good night!! Mixed him up some mash(watered down pellets) this morning and he gobbled it right up!! Also giving him a little dry pellets that he eats also! Still having trouble with his hay! While my awesome mom did the rest of the chores I spent my time brushing him, brushing out his tail and picking his stall!!! Ace is very bad with spray bottles (fly spay, show sheen, etc) around his back legs, he dances around trying to get away from it. I tried to spray some medicine on his wounds and he was dancing around like he does when I spray him with spray bottles!! As always, Ace's Prayer Warriors are AWESOME!!!! Keep up the great work!!!!

He must have had a bad experience where his feed bucket was because he wasn't wanting to go up and eat out of it, he was just stretching his neck as far as it would go to reach it! Food in his belly, fresh water, doctored wounds, and clean stall! He is a happy pony munching on his hay!!! Keep it up Prayer Warriors, he still has a long road!!!!

His stall was a mess and he is shedding like crazy!!! His tail is getting looser and his third eyelids are slowly coming down! He is also not near as wobbly! My vet that I correspond with about everything and he has been on speed dial everyday, feels that he is out of woods and in the clearing enjoying the sunshine!!!! It will still be awhile before all the clinical signs are gone but he doesn't feel as if his life is in danger anymore!!!! What a relief!!!! We are officially on recovery road!!!!  Ace Update - He got to catch a good breeze today and enjoy some light!! All the barn windows were open and the door was halfway open!! By the time we got back to the barn with the shoer at 2, he was acting like he wanted to lay down(he hasn't tried to lay down since the night of March 1st) come to find out he was a little warm and itchy with his fly sheet on. Took it off and he settled right down. Got back home from taking the shoer home around 5:30, got him out of the stall while mom cleaned it. He stood happily by a hay bale munching away while I curried him!!! Fed him his mash and then had to wrestle him to spray stuff on his wounds!! After 4 weeks of him not being a bear during feeding time, him being a bear now is a little scary!!!! He is doing very well! Hopefully the symptoms will subside soon!!! I honestly cannot Thank everyone enough for all of the prayers!!!

Ace Update - He had a bit of a rough start to the night. I knew it was going to get chilly so I put his sheet back on after chores. At about 10:30, he was hot and itchy and trying to lay down. I don't know if he fell or what but he was very worried. I went out and took the sheet off and sat with him for a bit. He was fine when I came in and was relaxed through the night!! He had ate all of his hay from last night and gobbled up his mash this morning! Slowly upping his rations of feed! He is starting to gain a little weight back slowly but still is in poor condition. He is still a very happy horse except when you mess with him at feeding time!! He also has started to suck air and rock back when he is cribbing!!! Before he would just bite on the bucket! A lot of people may not like the fact that he cribs but he has done it his whole life and been a top competitor! I say keep them happy and they will work!! Heading to town shortly to get him some fresh new shavings and re-bed his stall!! Keep up the great work as always prayer warriors!!

Ace Update - He has had a good day! If everything is still good at his night feed/check, I am going to try and sleep through the whole night for the first time!!! He got a new feed tub today and new fresh shavings!!! Mom cleaned his stall while I brushed him!! I then asked him if he was ready to go back in his stall and eat supper, he turned around and took off into his stall by himself and left me standing there to watch! I was sooo scared!!!! I am excited that he is being so independent but he still scared me!!!! As always keep up the great work Prayer Warriors!!! We are coming to the end of Day 24!!!

Not much else to update other than I got my first full nights sleep in 24 days!!!! I still woke up on my own out of habit through the night from the alarms that usually go off but not near as groggy feeling this morning! Praying for continued progress!!!

Ace Update - He had a very good day!!! He laid down for a little bit for the first time in 24 days!!! I think it scared him a little though from the last time he laid down and his leg is still very sore!! I got him out today and brushed and clipped him up! He is looking very handsome!! He is still eating and drinking very well! I am planning to sleep the whole night again unless I wake up on my own!!! Recovery road is feeling pretty good! Praying it stays that way!!!!

Ace Update - Sorry I didn't update this morning I got called to work and was late! Ace had a pretty rough day. He tried to lay down and had quite a bit of trouble getting up. It really stressed him out and he didn't want to eat and was in a lot of pain. So, after a very rough day for my poor boy, he is doing much better! Gave him some belly medicine and bute at chore time. He seems more relaxed now and tried to eat me when I gave him his late night snack!! Put more medicine on his leg and he has also drank some water! Praying for a goodnight!

Gobbled up his mash this morning and was eating his hay when I left!!! I do not have to work today so I will be closely monitoring him all day in case he decides to lay down again I will be able to get out to him sooner and get him relaxed!!! Praying he stays doing well!!!

Ace Update - He is still doing well! He ate his mash very slow this morning! I think he might have been a little upset with me that I wasn't there for his late night feed last night! He ate good the rest of the day! His eyelids are slowly coming down and his tail is getting looser! He is still very wobbly and his wounds are very inhibiting for him! Keep up the great work Prayer Warriors

He ate well all day and ate his mash good tonight! He is able to eat treats now and is really liking that! Still along ways from 100% but we are on the right road!!! Ace Update - He is still doing great! He was a little more wobbly today then yesterday! He is still eating and drinking good! It took quite a bit of persuading to get him out of the stall tonight so I could clean it! You would be surprised at what a handful of treats will do for a horses mindset LOL I can't thank everyone enough for all the love and support you have shown us! It just blows my mind at how many wonderful Prayer Warriors he has! Keep up the great work!!!

Ace Update - Haven't done one for a while as there has been nothing much to update. He is still eating and drinking good. He is pooping and peeing good. His wounds are slowly healing. His eyes are pretty much back to normal except when he gets excited they go up a little. His tail is really loose and has good movement but it still sticks up a little. He is slowly starting to move better and getting better range of motion in his back leg. He has gained so much weight in just the last 3 weeks. He still has a long way to go but he is definitely headed in the right direction!!!

Ace Update - He is still doing great and getting better everyday! Got some new wound medicine today! Washed his leg off and took him for a walk! He got all kinds of crazy and busted me in the face!!! So we decided to turn him loose in the round pen! If it had better footing I think he would have been even more wild than what he was! He is definitely feeling great though!!!!
