Location: Shawnee, OK | I will be making my first big trip with my two mares in a few weeks. We are going from Oklahoma to Washington. I was wondering if anyone could suggest routes to take or avoid. Maybe places to stay along the way. Any other advice you would like to give will be appreciated! Thanks! |

Location: SE Louisiana | Keep an eye on road conditions, especially over the mountains. Stick to interstate highways as much as you can. Even tho 2 lane roads may knock off a few miles. Avoid driving in the Northwest after dark if you can. The deer/elk/moose are big and are plentiful up there at night.

Mapquest your trip and it'll give you a few different options. Then start checking the road conditions like Komet said. This time of year can be super tricky. |

Maps suggests two big options either
Kansas, Denver Colorado, Wyoming, then Salt Lake City and on up
Or
Texas, New Mexico, Utah and on up.
Should I avoid Denver? Or doesn't matter? |

Just check the road conditions on the northern route. Denver has a beltway most of the way around it. 470... You can take that from I70 to I25 and run up to I80 and go west to SLC and grab I84. I've been along this route more than once from Missouri to as far as Boise.. Just keep an eye out for incoming storms from the Pacific. Don't run low on gas on that trip. It's a long way between towns and I only had to lose a belt once to teach me to carry spares. |

Location: Shawnee, OK | I was thinking of buying a couple of anti-fatigue mats like you use if you stand while working for my horses front end for the trip. does this sound like a good idea or a bad idea? |

Soft Ride boots would be a great idea for your horses. Even if you didn't use them once you got to your destination you could sell them and get most if not all of your money back. |

Location: Shawnee, OK | Wow, those cost a lot of money and I would have to get a proper size and my trip is in 2 weeks. I can get those mats at a local store for $30 each and just leave them in my trailer. I hope I can get someone's opinion on just getting the matts? |

Location: Phoenix | I would just get mats.
You might be better off takin the southern route. Going thru CO and WY....you might run into some snow.
when we went from WA to Tx I just kept water and hay in front of them at all times. We let them out every 9-12 hours. Sounds like a lot, but they were fine. We would rest for at least an hour and stretch their legs and graze if possible. |
