Location: OH-IO | Ok folks!!! Heres my scoop.... I need to loose 50-70 pounds. I lost 30 then gained 35 back...it happens every time. So obviously i need something to help me so this doesnt happen again. I am now 17 days soda free, watching what i eat such as breads n stuff ( i am not eating like a vegitarian but you get the idea) I work from sun up to sun down so my exercise is kinda squashed. I need a program of some sort to help me. I used to take phentrimine and it helped tremendously but my nutritionist dr moved away, and to top it off I had surgery at the beginning of the year making matters worse as I was on bed rest for almost 2 months. I thought about the jenny craig, or those types of meal plans and stuff but I DO NOT HAVE $500/month extra to spend (that stuff is out of this world!) Any thoughts or input, or anyone got any info I could use? Thanks in advance |

Location: In The Land of Cotton | You can get lots of free info right here or on google. Taking pop out is a start. Do the small tips you read about. Eat on a smaller plate. Don't buy junk at the store. Take your lunch. Try to eat only fresh veggies and fruit. For lunch do the tuna in a pack, with veggies. Google healthy snacks. Drink lots of water.
You can do this, good luck and take small steps to change your eating habits. It will be a slower process then pills, but it will be a lasting one. |

Location: OH-IO | Thanks! Ive really increased my veggies. Drink mostly water. I sneak in a iced tea now and then. But unsweetened.
I just really want to loose it all, my balance is completely gone, which makes for very disappointing barrel races when I ride like a monkey. I went from a 1d rider to a 4d rider b/c I simply have no balance anymore :( Im miserable, I just want to be me again |

| google the paleo diet... it is a life style change... but i have found this to be the easiest "diet" to follow.
pretty much just cuts out the carbs, no calorie counting, and you can eat as much of the good stuff as you want.
for example...when i started this with my boyfriend...
he would eat 5 eggs scrambled, and a huge side of bacon for breakfast...
and then he would eat a half tray of salad and almost a whole rotisserie chicken for lunch!
Steak and veggies for dinner....
I followed the exact same diet plan, just half as much food as him...and he still lost more weight than me. |

Location: Up and over to the right | A diet change will definitely help. Make sure you aren't starving yourself but cut out as much dairy and refined sugars as possible. Through some health reasons I had to cut out a TON of processed foods, dairy, sugary drinks and on top of that I'm a pescatarian (fish as meat only) for other reasons. After losing a ton of weight I've been holding a steady weight finally and stopped fluctuating by 10lbs a week!
Some of those diets use metabolic schemes that trick the body into thinking it's being starved. The problem is, when you "starve" yourself your body is going to keep all of the extra fat it can find to keep you alive because it thinks you're dying.
I've also found my gastro problems have lessened and I feel overall much better. I stick to water and tea everyday for drinks and eat little meals all day long to keep my acid reflux at bay. |

30 minutes 3 days a week would be a great start. I have the time (usually) to do it 7 days a week and that's what I did while losing the weight. Now to maintain I do it at least 3 days but normally more. I refused to drive to town to work out and I refused to pay Weight Watchers or something like that mainly because I'm cheap but also because I totally remember the crap food I ate to put the weight on so if I cut out the same crap food it should come off. I always have a few Healthy Choice meals in the freezer in case I need something quick or to take to work with me. They have very few calories and are a complete meal. Have hard boiled eggs in the fridge at all times for quick snacks. Lots of salads but watch the dressing. I also found a whole grain bread that each slice is only 40 calories so I pair that up with some grilled chicken or turkey slices and I've got a sandwich. |

| I lost my baby weight by counting calories. For the first 2 months I was very strict. Every time I ate something I would add up the calories and kept the total on a dry erase board on my fridge. You can find a calculator online to figure out how many calories you should be consuming each day to lose weight. After awhile it becomes habit and you'll have a pretty good idea of how many calories are in each meal/snack without having to look it up.
This worked best for me because I didn't have to cut out any foods. If I wanted a candy bar, I'd eat it and just cut the calories out somewhere else. I never felt like I was starving myself or depriving myself something. The weight didn't come off overnight, but remember that you didn't put it on overnight either. You should really only lose about 1-2 pounds per week, depending on how much you have to lose, if you want to keep it off. And this has to be a lifestyle change, not a temporary fix, or you will put the weight back on. Most people recommend staying away from the scale. Personally, I like to weigh every morning so that I know where I stand and if I need to watch my caloric intake or if I have some wiggle room.
I lost about 30lbs and kept it off for almost 2 years doing this. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Be careful not to cut too many calories out of the diet. You will lose the weight at first but often your body goes into a "starvation" mode if you will and when you go to the "maintenance" program you body tends to crave more. I lost 50+ lbs 25 years ago or so and have managed to more or less maintain that but I'm the kind that loves food and I suck at "dieting" so I run. I hate to run but I like to be a fit part of the team between me and my horses, that is what motivated me to make the changes in the first place. My sister is on a mission to lose weight and she has been very good about if it comes from a package she doesn't eat it, no canned foods, no pre-made anything, her meat is the only thing basically with a wrapper on it when she buys it. She has lost about 30 lbs since November!!!! |

This! All calories are not created equal! I lost almost 50 pounds by cutting out whites ( sugars, flours, etc) and no processed foods! I did not count calories and ate several times a day. I was never hungry. I would lose 5 or 10 pounds, stay there a couple of weeks, let my body adjust then lose some more. If I wanted to cheat I would go to a bakery and buy one delicious cupcake and enjoy! I did not over do it that way and would do this maybe once or twice a month. I did not bring anything bad into the house. I had the time so I hit the gym 5-7 hours a week. Got hooked on working out and my schedule starts around getting my workout in. Good luck, you can do it! |

Location: Alberta | I agree with joining Weight Watchers, their program sets you up for success and correct mind frame (if you chose) even after your not on the program.
My exercise suggestion is,....do you get a lunch break? However long it is take half of it and go for a walk....it's a start.
On your day(s) off, prep yourself meals OR PLAN what your eating the days to follow AND grocery shop for those items ONLY. It will make your week easier for having good food available.
Bottom line, making time for certain aspects is what needs to be done, your health is worth taking the time, good luck!

| If you are a person on the go, if you have one day off, I would suggest using part of this day to cook meals for the week.
Also look at the food guide and see what a serving size looks like, cooked vegetables is a size of a hockey puck, fruit size of a soft ball, or hockey puck, 2 1/2 oz is one serving of meat. Grains is a size of a hockey puck or one slice or bread, half a bagel is 2 servings.
Try cooking with coconut or olive oil, no more then a teaspoon.
Milk products try drinking skim milk, buy cheese/yogurt with the lowest fat content, but with yogurt try to stay away with any that have added sugar.
For work this is what I try to do, cook 2 different meat products, chicken, ribs then cook 2-3 different vegetables, I don't add butter to my veggies, and I will cook rice, couscous, etc. I try and make 14 different meals, and put them in the freezer.
I always keep some chicken frozen separately this way if I want something different then I will add chicken to a salad.
Also take sometime to make a grocery list, make sure you eat before you go to the grocery store as it has been proven that people buy empty calories (foods high in sugar) if they are shopping on an empty stomach.
Also keep to the outside of the grocery store, the processed food is in the middle.

Like CYA said ... change your eating habits, this is a lifestyle change not a "diet" gimmick thing. In order to KEEP weight off, clean up your eating habits and kitchen habits. My personal trainer who has trained me to run a full marathon loves to preach that exercise will help you lose the weight but what you do in the kitchen is what keeps it off!
You CAN do it!! I love going to theberry.com - they have GREAT daily motivation items geared for women who are looking for the lifestyle and exercise change. It's a great lil community and often has healthy meal ideas too!
Determination is gonna get you through!! You got this! |

Beef isn't bad for you - it is how you prepare the beef that can make it unhealthy. Google recipes and plan ahead - shopping the "outside" of the store is a great way to keep refined products out of your life too!

| The easiest way for me to lose weight is to eat 4 ounces of lean protein(from meat) at every meal. Breakfast-tenderloin, lunch-chicken or fish, supper-steak. 4 ounces of lean meat is VERY filling and doesn't leave room for much junk in your meals. I have to stay under about 1600 calories and under 100 carbs to lose weight. The other most important thing for me to lose weight is to stay BUSY outside! Its amazing how many calories per day you burn from just doing normal farm/horse chores! I have a Polar heart rate monitor and its amazing how many calories I burn on days I'm working outside. Plus, if you are working outside you are too busy and too far away from the house to grab snack every little bit. |

| Instead of buying an exercise bike I have an indoor trainer for my outdoor bike. Then I can ride the bike outside too. Also, if you can get outdoors or have a treadmill the Couch to 5k app is amazing. Did it several years ago and have fallen in love with running and fitness. And this is from a gal who couldn't jog a half mile without keeling over. Good luck! |

| Good advice so far! Another helpful trick, is after doing all of that healthy grocery shopping, put the fruit that can be left out (oranges, bananas, apples, etc) in a fruit bowl on the table where it is in plain sight. You'd be surprised how more apt you'll be at grabbing a healthy snack just because it's more convenient. Also, I keep water in front of myself all the time; at my desk, in the car, everywhere. Sometimes, I think I'm hungry when actually I'm just thirsty. A previous poster mentioned hot water with lemon, that's a great thing to do before bed. I will do that or some chammomile tea with lemon. My SO is a physician's assistant and a registered dietitian, and his advice to every one of his patients trying to lose weight is "Keep it simple. The closer the food looks to it's natural state, the better it is for you." Eat breakfast everyday, cut portion size (using smaller dishware helps), eat a lot of fiber rich foods like apples, green beans, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, berries, etc. Good job on cutting out the soda |

Location: OH-IO | I LOVE lemons! (I used to put a lemon in my pop, but now that I am soda free i put it in my water and tea)
I love to work outside, plus we just bought a new place and we are getting ready to build the new pony barn and put up acres of pasture so that will be nice (its like free exercise i suppose)
I got a regular ride bike for christmas, it was kind of cheap, and it killed my butt! I even tried sitting on a pillow, so I borrow my mother in laws exercise bike, its like a bike/glider. It was a little more expensive (like $200) but well worth it. The seat is great and the way it is put together it doesnt hurt my knees or back and it works out my arms too. (8 minutes last night and I was toasted!)
It is this one if anyone wants to check it out.

| I would seriously consider Weight Watchers. You can eat ANYTHING, as long as it's in moderation. They TEACH you what to eat to improve your weight loss AND how to keep it off once it's gone.
I joined AGAIN in January. I joined in 2009, and lost 50 lbs, but quit before I got to the maintenance phase because I thought I wouldn't gain it back. I gained 30 back because a little here and a little there can't hurt...right?? WRONG!
I have lost 18.4 lbs so far on the way to my goal of 54 lbs. It is SO easy really! They make it fun and easy, and you really can eat anything! |

| As for exercise bikes....I have a very nice recumbent bike. The seat is big and wide and very comfortable however I don't use it much....I like to do more of a total body workout than just a leg workout. I like to train with heavy weights. I have a big home gym type thing that I try to use pretty often. It has a bench press, overhead pull down, you can do curls, rows, leg lifts and backwards leg lifts and all kinds of other exercises. It was a $1500 piece of equipment when it was new but we found it used on Craiglist just 25 miles down the road from us for $400. The guy said he'd rather work out at the gym and wanted it out of his way. We were very happy! |

The recumbent is nice because you can kick back and read while you mindlessly burn calories. Exercising indoors is boring, kind of like riding in an arena all the time. |

Location: flatlands | Can't believe no one on this thread has said this yet: RIDE!!!! I do a Zumba routine every morning before work--sucks, by the way!-- for almost an hour 5 days a week. This burns about 400 calories a day and KILLS me. I watch what I eat, drink lots of water, and then log everything into an online calorie journal. After work, I beeline it home, and I FORCE myself to ride. I have ridden at least 3 times a week since January 6, even in sub-freezing weather/windchill. It is miserable sometimes, and I'm beat after going all day, but to long trot just 2 head 3 miles a piece takes about 40 minutes. That is a little over 400 calories, and it is far less painful than the workout I do in the morning. Plus, my horses are legged up, and even though it's been so cold this winter, I don't feel as depressed as I have in the past at this time of year, and I know it's because I am outside getting sunshine, even if it doesn't make me any warmer! I have stuck to this routine 5 days a week since January 6 and I have lost 15-16 pounds. I could easily be down much more, but on the weekends I am home with two small kids, and so I induldge and just eat whatever. ( I do still try to ride or exercise at least once.) I even had beer, chips, and queso last weekend. I just make sure to get right back with it Monday morning. I have read that skipping Mondays is a sure way to fall off the wagon. |

| If you like to dance and "get your groove on" check on the FB page Soul Grooves Connection. This is one of may favorite classes-not the hardest of cardio but some routines can get my heart rate up which is OK, not all cardio needs to be in the top zones. Here is a sample, fun class that is always packed. Love our instructor Tammy- very motivational. She posts routines on line so we can practice :). Fun cardio

You hit the nail on the head. I have a recumbant bike because I have a bad tail bone from landing on my arse instead of my feet when a horse bucked me off and sitting on a regular bike seat hurts like a mother. I can scoot through 10 miles on my bike while reading my book or watching Kelly & Michael and the time and miles fly by. I also hate riding in an arena. Its like watching paint dry. I would sure love one with weather like I've had this winter though - but get me outside when its nice. |

| I go, I move just like her, well, in my mind I do :). They are on the schedule twice a week. I do an hour of weights and an hour of Soul Grooves for cardio. The instructor in the video teaches the class, she used to be head cheerleader for the Houston Rockets and did all the choreography for them. She comes up with some fun stuff, only exercise class I am smiling while doing, wish all exercise was like that.
