My husband has been diagnosed with barretts (mildest form). We are still trying to determine good and bad foods but I am needing to hear others experiences.  He started his 4th med yesterday and today he said his heartburn is almost the worst it's ever been.  They haven't tried Nexium yet which I don't understand why.  I know it must be expensive. He's worried because his coworkers knew a guy that died from this because he couldn't get his reflux under control. We've been dealing with this for a few months and I would just appreciate some input.

I have been on 40mg nexiun bid twice a day for 15 years, for reflux and i have a problem where mynstomach doesnot empty fast as it should, for about 5years i,had to be very careful what i ate, for a long time i just would not,eat out. But i was on heavy pain killers and with my back problems that affected my bowels but did not know it but when i got my back fixed it really helped my to,go like i should. Then i had thryoid problems had the same problem whic is now fixed. Go on the internet and look up heartburn diet, need to limit coffee, tomato products, greasy fried foods, choclate, large amounts of meat, large amount, of fiber products. Ther are probably some other things, but please take care of barretts as it killed one of my husbands friends.

I have GERD and ulcers-when my ulcers act up, the gerd seems way worse. I try to stay away from anything tomato based-ketchup, spaghetti sauce, pizza. If i drink too much coffee/coke, it really seems to upset it. I take prilosec and it works for me as long as i stay away from my bad foods (sometimes i don't have much will power). Hope they get it under control, i know how painful it can be

He has cut out coffee, soda and anything tomato completely.  Working to narrow other triggers.  How much is nexium for you?

If his Barrett's is bad enough they may need to do surgery. Have they discussed surgery with him?
